Been doing tech since the Apple II days. Playing in the manufacturing space with EV's currently.

And yeah, I totally fail Leetcode interviews.

Never heard of this project. I would think it was influential on the development of the Falconer V-12 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falconer_V-12 for the Thunder Mustang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_51_Thunder_Mustang
dver··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (March 2019)
I posted once in the looking and received a couple of calls from that post. Didn't latch on to anyone, but was good conversations.

Better analogy is the MiLB minor leagues, lots of eager desperate players who make little to nothing and have no bargaining power.

Agree, I'll have a value point to balance as well. I don't expect it to have any net effect on my career at this point, hope there is some worthwhile learning though.
dver··on A Guide for Adults Going to College
Mid 50's here. As my kids are hitting college age I'm starting to get the itch to go back and complete my degree. My company has a facility near Cal Poly, where I went, and I drive by on my way in and out of town when I go onsite. Really don't know what to expect, figure I'll just wander on campus and stop by the admin building and see what they have to say. I'll bring my old student ID with me, just in case.

I've used this program several times in the last few years after seeing a comment here on HN.

I started at 49, 55 now, no serious weight lifting experience prior, just basic exercises.

Worked up from the empty bar. My max on squat has been about 260, and deadlift about 310. Various injuries from prior to lifting keep that about as high as I go.

I supplement with swimming on non-lift days during the week, yoga and walking on most weekends.

Been a boon to overall fitness, have done long distance backpacking and canoeing (90 miles just this summer) with my oldest son's scout troop. Just last week did a one day 50 mile ride with my youngest son.

The app makes it a game that helps with the commitment, I get up at 4:30 to carve out the time each day.

Never heard of them, but reading the link, yes same idea.
dver··on The Apocalyptic Architecture of One 1970s Retail Chain
My first quarter at Cal Poly was about $90 if I recall correctly. Books were $150. Commuted to school and lived with my parents, who charged me small amount of "rent".

It was close to $400 a quarter near the end.

Paid my way through college working for Best.

It was minimum wage. $3.05/hr at the time, unloading 60 ft trailers in 100 degree heat in the late summer. That notwithstanding we actually had medical/dental and paid vacation time.

Often thought if they'd made it longer, it was a pretty close approximation to online shopping. Look at an example on the floor and then order from the warehouse upstairs.

Same joke here, I tell people I'm trending to card table in the parking lot.

Like my job and company alot, hate the open office. Literally have standing conversations start right behind my chair multiple times a day.

dver··on Europe's first solar panel recycling plant opens in France
Involved in large scale, long term solar testing in the past:

I was almost always better to let the rain clean the panels in the field, even in some pretty dusty and arid climates.

The deciding factor was usually the labor cost of the cleaning. (Think very depressed labor prices) Even then the risk of damage from the cleaning ops might sway away from manual cleaning.

dver··on Ask HN: What, if anything, do you listen to while coding?
Yes, anything Miles Davis, and most of Vangelis have been for my coding.

dver··on Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry
I went to the test doc at: http://altoonabustest.psu.edu/buses/reports/480.pdf?15190591...

The relevant quote there is:

The interior of the bus is configured with seating for 39 passengers including the driver. Eight seats fold away for 2 wheelchair positions. The manufacturer passenger placard indicates that the test bus can accommodate 42 standing passengers. At 150 lbs per person, this load results in a measured gross vehicle weight of 43,540 lbs which exceeds the gross vehicle weight rating of 42,000 lbs by 1,540 lbs or approximately 10 people. At this load, the front gross axle weight rating is also exceeded. All testing performed under this partial test was performed at a seated load weight of 37,230 lbs.

My read from that is total weight, and only about loading to highest placarded passenger count, which using the govt. weight would overload the axle.

I didn't see anything that would change based on weight location or CG.

As with every EV vehicle it's about weight reduction while maintaining structure and safety margins.

dver··on Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry
It's one of the difficulties in manufacturing for US entities is the huge amount of customization. Pretty much everything outside of the shell, battery pack and motor, can/is customized.

We of course think our tech is better.

I work out of Bay Area office in Burlingame.

I'm back in the Greenville site a bunch. Really nice area, the downtown is super active, people really friendly. My wife and I have it on the think about list for bugging out of CA.

Plus they just bought some of our buses.
