Been doing tech since the Apple II days. Playing in the manufacturing space with EV's currently.

And yeah, I totally fail Leetcode interviews.

dver··on Lyft to lay off about 700 employees in second round of job cuts
Mostly the same points.

In early 2000 within a few months the traffic on 680 south over the Sunol Grade(main road to the SV from points NE) went from dead stopped at 4:30am, to no traffic at all at 7:30am. It was breathtaking.

I managed to hole up in a consulting gig in manufacturing. We had our rates shaved 20% and felt lucky. Everyone who had left for greener pastures called up looking for work over the next year. I mean everyone. It was sad.

As described above, there were no jobs to had.

I recall a new building put up around the 580/680 interchange. I used it as my canary, when it was occupied I would call the recovery happening. It was empty from 2000-2003.

2008 was bad for other sectors, tech had issues, but nothing like 2000.

What's going on now isn't the same. There are specific pullbacks. Twitter is about the Elon buyout. In other places there is money. And in my manufacturing universe I'm having trouble finding people.

dver··on Ask HN: Can you recommend me a fast, light text editor for Windows?
I've used EditPdPro forever, there is a free light version.

dver··on Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend?
Family weekend for my youngest son's college baseball team.

A scrimmage each day. A big BBQ dinner tonight. Some alumni activities as well.

My Dad joined my wife and I, so we get some time with him as well.

dver··on Vangelis has died
His work, especially the colab with Jon Anderson, has been an important sound track to my life.

And dammit COVID 19

dver··on Ask HN: How common is it for people to come back to a previous employer?
Seen it.

Did it myself. Laid off with a large group.

Attempted a start up.

Then someone who wasn't laid off called with an interesting new project, so I went back. Then I was laid off again, along with the person who had called me back.

Not going back for a third time...

dver··on Video of Tesla on Autopilot Crashing into Stopped Truck at 75mph
Had this happen, freeway speed, car stopped no lights.

I managed to get on the brakes but slammed into the vehicle still.

(Was in my 20's, so still youthful reaction times, drove lot, did SCCA events so at least an avg driver)

dver··on The Magnavox Odyssey was the first commercial home video game console
My Dad was a TV repairman at a Magnavox dealer. My siblings and I would play this all the time in the shop.

I've thought about that when I walk into one of kids rooms and they're playing some super realistic game.

dver··on Remembering the time it rained 6k pounds of marijuana on Yosemite (2019)
My dad was the AV tech around then. Similar stories.

dver··on 26 Years of Delphi
Another year and another Delphi post.

Started with Delphi 2, the productivity benefits vs VB were amazing. Plus managing code and having a usable object based language.

I went from nothing to a PLC(programmable logic controller) to database manufacturing floor delivery system in 3 weeks for my first app. Amazing productivity.

Cut to now, I have a custom MES/ERP app written in D7 I still support or for 3 sites. 20 years old.

Every couple of weeks I have to boot up the VM and do a few things.

dver··on Why lasers are so brilliantly useful
And just skipping over the running out of money thing.

Old enough that ATM's were a big change.

Before that, it was a Friday trip to the bank to get cash for the weekend. Credit

Staying within 1 to 2 days a week commute to the office range keeps you from getting a 10-20% pay cut maybe?
dver··on Small Businesses Are Dying by the Thousands – and No One Is Tracking the Carnage
Both of the studios I frequent have moved all classes to online. In the cases of the classes I've gone to the number of people in class if now larger, no longer being limited to the size of the building or location of the student.
dver··on Ask HN: Have you ever gone without a computer or phone for an extended period?
Born in 63, so yeah many years prior to those devices becoming a part of daily life. Interestingly was just having a conversation with my son's about the first time I used an ATM.

Anyway, in the 90's I took a year off and did volunteer work while teaching mediation and other spiritual pursuits. I recall being asked to sign in a date and looked at the person at the person at the desk and telling them I didn't even know what day of the week it was.

In the last decade I've done a number of trips with my son's boy scout troop. Multiple weeks in Canada on canoe trips, or hiking in NM. No contact with the outside world, best healing time ever.

dver··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
Glider roots of the airframe.

Your correct on the Mts, always nice to have a turbo for the big rocks here in CA.

dver··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
The 206 is great load hauling beast, not had the chance to fly one myself. Plenty of time in the 172 and 182, had a 172 for awhile.

Mostly agree about the DA-40, but I'd actually put it ahead of the current 172. It's a bit faster, great vis, and super sweet to fly.

dver··on Battery Pack Prices Fall As Market Ramps Up
Controls Eng for plant level PLC/HMI, Automation Eng for interconnect with the higher layers (SCADA/MES/ERP/Cloud) is the general wording I see. But, yeah lots of mix and match with those words.

In the middle of architecting the systems for a new pack line myself.

dver··on New Battery Technology Coming Soon – A Game Changer

dver··on Ask HN: Do you write tests before the implementation?
I've written integration test rigs prior to development, not unit tests.

Had mine stolen off a Toyota Sequoia. Done in the driveway, alarm on, bedroom windows open.

It was so clean, not even dust on the ground. Looked like it had been beamed away.

They hit the whole area in a couple of nights. Four wheel drive vehicles were popular because of easy access.

To get them replaced was a bit over 5k. My understanding is the thives get about 50 a piece.

dver··on Questions to ask a company during a job interview
Did they get an offer, if so did they accept?
dver··on Ask HN: Has anyone ever been hired from “Who wants to be hired?” threads?
I had a couple of phone conversations based on posting in the "Who wants to be hired". Nothing led to work but enjoyed speaking to people who reached out. I'm in a less popular niche with manufacturing applications so I think it's good for spreading a wide net.

Many of my neighbors are FANG employed, equally as mystified as to why none of those haven't opened a satellite office here.
