dvduval··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
I think to myself how I would probably be just fine if the Google search engine became a public service tomorrow and all advertisements were removed, or perhaps only a small area of the page were allowed to be used to make enough money to pay the costs of upkeep.

I'm reminded of how I was so enamored by the internet during the age of the directory. Humans assembled information to share with each other, and there were different search engines you could use as well. It was just so much more interesting at the time.

There are still wonderful examples of information being assembled by humans like Wikipedia. But these types of sites struggle to have enough money to operate, while other companies just dominate everything, especially anything that involves money. That's how the market works.

But there are certain things the way having libraries, police, firefighters, maybe you can health insurance, where if profit is the only thing that's going to be considered, it just creates a society that is less worthwhile. Perhaps the search engine needs to be considered a public service.

dvduval··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
An advertiser that advertises advertisers and monopolizes Google AdWords. I have the same thing in my industry where there are a couple of "directories" that sell advertising in my industry. They take the top couple of spots on Google AdWords. You click on their ad, and then you have a list of advertisements. This is a poor result for the end user. They have to click more times just to get to what they were looking for. Why can't Google just provide the best search results in the first place?
dvduval··on If landlords get wiped out, Wall Street wins, not renters
I read little about rent price depreciation, but it seems to me this is already happening. People will move to cheaper housing, and the existing mortgages will be untenable.

Do you think they are using AI as they observe? Is some of this AI passive? Obviously they wouldn't be able to spy on everyone, or else they would need a lot of researchers haha
dvduval··on We Chat, They Watch
I embrace that virtually anywhere I post there are going to be some repercussions of doing so. For example, here I will be downvoted if I post something that people don't like.
dvduval··on Ask HN: Contrary Opinions
Okay, so what is the right way to go about this?
dvduval··on Ask HN: Contrary Opinions
I agree with you. Is important that we are thoughtful of others as we also try to provide our point of view. The problem I ran into this evening was that when I provided my point of view there was an immediate political response. And I was also downvoted. so my point is obviously politics have some power here. I was not even trying to be political tonight.
dvduval··on Ask HN: Contrary Opinions
Thank you, but I didn't quite understand your reply. doll?

When I get "there" what would that be like? You are funny. But you don't know me.
dvduval··on We Chat, They Watch
I've been studying Chinese for 6 years. I probably know a thing or two about Chinese government. But obviously you've decided what you believe I know. Good for you.
dvduval··on We Chat, They Watch
I communicate regularly with people in mainland China. For me the best policy is just don't say anything that I would be too concerned about being shared. Of course, my behavior is the same for other apps. Beyond government-level type hacking, I feel a little more safe on some of the Chinese apps, as I know they have a stronger hand in their ability to stop hackers and scammers.

Most important is what the advertisements at the top show. The organic results are so yesterday. The Google Ads AI should already be teaching you that All you base belong to us.
dvduval··on Origin of Language
People made sounds. Babies crying. Mothers listened.
dvduval··on China's industrial capacity appears to be back to normal
Normal would include people wearing masks to work, and practicing social distancing, and not eating out to lunch like they did before. Schools are still not all in session. Some are starting to go back. as I understand it they are doing pretty good but it's not 100% yet. It's probably more like 80%. We got to say that they're not going to have the buyers because the markets of Europe and North America are not back to normal.

If it appears there is enough space there for our Congress to sit together with social distancing.
dvduval··on Colornames.org – A collaborative effort to name all 16.7M colors
I'm still working diligently on counting the grains of sand on the beach closest to me, and hopefully we can pool all of our work together for a final count. As soon as that's done I'll start trying to name all the stars. Colors? I'm tired already.

dvduval··on Internet Archive responds: Why we released the National Emergency Library
There are lots of children still going to school, and there's no simple way for them to obtain books that previously would have been available for free. It is sort of a reading emergency!

Now where I live the library system is awesome, and I found the selection was way better than Barnes & Noble.

Libraries purchase a lot of books every year and it's no small amount of money. That being said it's also wasteful for many people to buy a book only to read it once. So we need to put more thought into how we can do this so we aren't so wasteful.

dvduval··on Show HN: Screen – screen sharing for remote work, by the cofounder of Screenhero
Do you know if you can share screens between China and the United States? Are there some geographical limitations?
dvduval··on Unacast Social Distancing Scoreboard
The site does not seem to load too well right now, but using using cell phone location data, it might allow us to identify problem areas ahead of an outbreak, especially when we know there are local transmission already taking place.
dvduval··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
I'm not going to disagree with you on this point. I was more just reporting what I saw at this dance studio in Chinatown.
dvduval··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
It's getting real now. Wash you hands, and avoid touching your face. Plan to spend less time in close proximity to others.

I saw a message at a dance studio in Monterey Park, which is like a Chinatown section of Los Angeles. The sign outside says that if you have been to China recently, please self quarantine yourself for 14 days before entering the dance studio.

I could definitely notice a difference in the approach they had. They are already worried about it and they are taking steps. I'm not really sure we're ready for this thing. But it's here. It sure seems that way anyway.

dvduval··on Clearing up some myths around e-cigarettes
I support the right of people to be able to go wherever they want and not be exposed to smoke, to not have their kids playing atound people smoking, to be able to open their windows on a nice day and not have the smell of smoke coming in the window, and to be able to go for a walk and not feel like you have to walk around people that are smoking.

I'm sure there will be more studies about what is safe. But I don't want to be a participant in the study.

dvduval··on I Learned French in 12 Months
I have achieved the same results in Chinese (HSK 5), but it took me 5 years. The resource I see that is missing is HelloTalk, with lots of opportunities to converse for free, and post your writing practice to receive corrections. Can also post your voice.

dvduval··on In 2019, Americans went more to the library than to the movies on average
I guess I'm one of those frequent visitors to the library, and as strange as it might seem I don't believe I have been to see a movie at the theater in more than 10 years.
dvduval··on Economic Inequality (2016)
Yes so I believe what you describe is a situation where the winners are already dominating to the point that the average person does not have the resources to compete. And this is where we must find ways to measure just how sick the system has become so that we can determine that rebalancing is needed. Of course the winners who control the system will tell you that nothing is needed here. Just go on about your business. Haha
