complexity is intrinsic. complications are extrinsic.

This is why I suspect that GLP-1 agonist medications have the potential to cause a cascade of negative consequences for the health of some people. One of the mechanisms is slowed gastric emptying which leads to decreased motility of the small intestine as a side effect. They do tell people to drink more water to counteract this. It just seems like trading one set of problems for another so hopefully doctor and patient will carefully weigh the benefits versus the risks. We shall see.

Busted headphones taped to a broomstick was my friend's microphone of choice when he did punk shows

I made it to the end but oh god my vision

American police officers ARE trained much like IDF forces. By the IDF! https://jinsa.org/jinsa_program/homeland-security-program/

I like steak as much as the next guy but there's no way I'd eat the free "steak" offered to me by someone who owns an ICE facility.

how are you still able to access archive.ph? do we need to put something in the hosts? All I've gotten there for the last month and a half is an nginx landing page.

There's something satisfying about seeing Chris Cornell and Pavarotti together on the same list.

No discussion of kitchen optimization is complete without mentioning the Finnish Dish Drying Cabinet invented by Maiju Gebhard while working as the head of the Household Department of the Finnish Work Efficiency Institute (1944-1945)

My gamer friend found a 23-inch CRT monitor on ebay and the box it showed up in was large enough to ship a washing machine. I can't imagine what it would be like for a 43-inch TV.

This is my problem when I try to open a jar with a stuck lid. In the act of gripping the lid well enough to have traction to turn it, I end up squeezing the lid so hard that it deforms and becomes harder to turn.

I'm glad to hear that the Blackfoot tribe is still going strong. I'm a nobody white guy but I've always felt a special connection with them. Here's why:

When I was a teenager and my parents weren't home, there was a knock at the door and it was an ancient-looking old man. He said he was a medicine man of the Blackfoot tribe. He didn't go into details but he said that since the tribe's numbers had dwindled they had voted to move to a different reservation. The problem was that the reservation they were going to was on land that used to belong to a tribe that was one of their ancient enemies and that he could not allow his tribe's medicine bag to end up there. He had heard that my parents were friends with the (? shawnee ? pawnee) and we had let them build a sweat lodge on our land that before he and his tribe left to go live with the tribe that was taking them in, he wanted to leave the medicine pouch somewhere it could stay on traditional Blackfoot lands. So anyway, he gave it to me and I got to hold it. The leather was old and cracked, the feathers were brittle, and the decorations were old shells and antique beads. I kept it for a while and used it in a couple of sweat lodge ceremonies with my friends before I finally told my dad about it and let him keep it.

It is established that hundreds of detainees from the July 2025 Alligator Alcatraz intake were unaccounted for in ICE’s online system by late August and reported as such through September 2025, with recurring reporting of about 800 with no online record and some 450 with unclear location data.

A certain country is trying to scrub the internet of evidence for its war crimes.

It mentions preemptive multitasking as one of its features. Are there any operating systems that still use cooperative multitasking?

Meanwhile we're speedrunning DustBowl 2.0 just in time for its 100th anniversary.

A conversation I overheard yesterday at the grocery store:

"Today is my birthday."

"How old are you?"

"105."

"Oh my gosh! What is your secret to long life?"

"Stay away from the doctor's office."

Completely irrelevant to the article, but next time you come across one of those internet crazies who think the Monster logo is satanic, you can troll them by pointing out that it is really just an Ugaritic L -- 𐎍 -- and that one of the original names for the Hebrew god was EL so really Monster is a godly drink, not satanic.

Wow. It's nice to finally have a better name for this. I saw several therapists when I was age 12-17 and they would just slap the blanket label "panic attacks" on it which never felt very apt at all. It rarely happened out of a state of panic. For example, I might look out the window at some trees and houses on the horizon and suddenly something would trigger a sensation that was like the awareness that the true scale of things was much, much larger than we usually let on. That line in a Pink Floyd song -- "My hands ... felt like ... two balloons" was like a lifeline for me in my teens to believe that I wasn't the only one dealing with this. (Except I would have sung it "My tongue ... felt like a ... schoolbus")

Sometimes I would be riding in a car, looking out the window and suddenly the "panic attack" would occur and I would beg the driver to slow down. Even when they stopped the car completely I would still be freaking out. "No! Go slower!"

Harvard Graphics! That's where it all started for me.

You seem to be a connoisseur of this genre of reading material. You might enjoy "Feelings Matter: Keys to the Unexplored Self" by Ceanne DeRohan.

Such a great soundtrack too! I rewatched it last week just for the jams. Also, for those into the glitch art genre, the dream sequences were WAY ahead of their time.

I grew up in a rural area where most people opted out of the light that the electric company installed for every customer who got service. Whenever I visited a city it infuriated me to see tens of thousands of lights and my parents would explain the 'safety' issue and that it prevented thefts. Nine year old me could only think, "well if people are gonna steal, why not spend the money you use on that electricity to buy them homes and maybe they won't want to steal..."

Reminds me of one time when I was hiking during the winter (in Arkansas) and I hiked down into a ravine that was filled with the most amazing smell. I could find no signs of life such as flowers to identify the source. The only thing I could find was a lone mushroom growing on a boulder. Nobody believed me when I told them that I thought the smell was due to a mushroom but it was the only possible thing in that whole valley.

We should figure out a way to harvest the helium.

It is definitely time to protect the sources of quality algae.

Philosophy in blender -- whew that's a topic! We can all wish it had stayed monolithic but there are multiple, like overlapping waves holding onto vestiges of previous eras.

Left click versus right click select was a real war and to some degree, minor skirmishes are still being fought. If you really and truly want to learn to 'go with the flow', realize that the 'default' hotkeys are not the real 'default' hotkeys for blender veterans and that it was fairly recent when the program defaults got switched over to be noob compatible.
