dustinmoris··on Poll: Should you work for yourself or take a full-time job?
Work for yourself if you can make it viable then it will be a lot more rewarding and grow you as a person as opposed to being a voiceless number in some open plan office just counting the days to your next holiday.
dustinmoris··on Rare whale shark photographed by pilot off Southern California
Whale sharks are majestic creatures. I was lucky enough to swim with them in the wild in the Philippines which has a lot of whale sharks in the Donsol area. What I really like about that place is that the locals don’t feed the whale sharks to attract them and so it’s a gamble to spot them but when you do then you can snorkel/dive with them in complete freedom and observe their natural interaction. It’s an amazing experience and I’d highly recommend that to anyone over the whale shark tourism that you get off Mexico.

dustinmoris··on Long Covid, Cognitive Impairment, and the Stalled Decline in Disability Rates
It's definitely a symptom of COVID. I know someone who had COVID and one day they coughed suddenly, dropped their iPhone on the floor and since then even the iPhone's temperature sensor doesn't work anymore. This is how infectious and terrible COVID is, just one cough caused the loss of temperature sensation!
dustinmoris··on Long Covid, Cognitive Impairment, and the Stalled Decline in Disability Rates
It's not just you. I know someone who had Long COVID for 1 month. I also know someone who works with someone who was running marathons every weekend and now they can't walk stairs because of knee pain, all because of COVID. I know someone else who had COVID and then was not doing any sport or social interaction for almost two years, barely left the house and who feels much more tired and depressed now, because of COVID. I know a child, who had COVID, then didn't have proper education for nearly two years and now is really underdeveloped, because of COVID of course.
dustinmoris··on Zuckerberg says FBI warning prompted Biden laptop story censorship
In China people can’t access objective and free speech media and they know it that they are being manipulated.

In America people can’t access objective and free speech media but their oppressors make them believe that they 100% can and everyone is falling for it.

Personally I find the latter much more scary and a dangerously broken society.

dustinmoris··on John Carmack on avoiding distractions
Here is something I discovered for myself:

If I work on something that I truly enjoy, then I am 100% focused on it and can't get distracted at all.

If I work off a backlog full of seemingly boring and meaningless tasks which some PO came up with and which I don't find remotely interesting or impactful then it's near impossible for me to not get distracted.

Long story short: If you struggle to stay focused, then maybe your work or your role in the company sucks (e.g. being overqualified for the tasks assigned to you, not challenged enough intellectually, etc.).

dustinmoris··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
People can’t be sent home because English people don’t give a shit about their family members. Brits think that the government should provide everything for them, even something simple as looking after an elderly person who is otherwise fine. What happened to family bonds and a bit of responsibility? Every winter around Christmas young family members (40-50 year olds) refuse to take their parents home because “they don’t want them at home over Christmas as it’s inconvenient for them” so they literally demand from the hospital staff to keep them in hospital for 1 or 2 weeks longer. Unfortunately the NHS is not allowed to dump these patients on the street. The problem is brazen entitlement. The NHS needs reform. Zero tolerance for those parasites, charge people for not showing up to appointments, charge people for simple medicines, charge people for choosing to be obese through an obesity tax.
dustinmoris··on An odd discovery on Spotify
Who launders pocket money? Anything less than hundreds of thousands of dollars is just not worth laundering. Nobody is going to ask you where you got a few 10k from.
dustinmoris··on An odd discovery on Spotify
How is this money laundering? If you use dirty money to sign up to Spotify and listen to specific songs so that you get some of the money “clean” back wouldn’t that in case of Spotify be the dumbest and most inefficient way of laundering in the history of money laundering? I mean doesn’t Spotify keep the majority so you’re essentially donating dirty money into the stock price of Spotify for the most part, no?
dustinmoris··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Yes, if you'd compare all horror stories of people having huge downtimes because their on-prem system collapsed vs. people having an issue with their cloud provider then we'd very quickly realise again why the cloud has taken us by storm.
dustinmoris··on Ask HN: What problem did Slack solve?
(and how easily you can fudge numbers of active users if you force install Teams on every Windows 11 machine and force it to run in the background, same as ignoring browser or search engine preferences and always force Internet Explorer Edge and Bing down people's throat until they suffocate in it)
dustinmoris··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
If you’ve been in the field long enough you can gauge a company simply by the tools they use and roles they hire for. They have vacancies for DevOps folks? Ok I know that the devs are not owning the full software development lifecycle and have no ownership of their products in production. Do they use Teamns and Azure DevOps? Ok it’s going to be a boring corp that dictates the tools which dev teams have to use from top down, because someone at the C level got a good deal for an entire Microsoft suite and now everyone is stuck with it. Do they only have devs working in a single programming language? Ok so they don’t really explore tech as curiously as they claim and don’t look for the best tool for the job. They make their work for their skills, rather than make their skills for the work they want to do.

There are many cues which you get from a company before you speak to an single person. I judge hard, because those cues never lied to me.

dustinmoris··on Browser password managers – flawed security, by design
A hijacked session is bad, but nowadays not nearly as bad as a leaked password:

- Sessions can be linked to a user's location and/or browser finger print

- Sessions are short(er) lived

- Sessions can easily get invalidated (e.g. device wide logout)

- Almost all critical actions are behind additional security (e.g. can't change password without 2FA or change billing information without confirming password and/or 2FA in order to apply changes, etc.)

- Sessions are not shared across properties, whereas many users share their password across multiple internet sites/properties

dustinmoris··on Subreply
Exactly this. It's "a user". For the same reason it would be "an honest mistake" and not "a honest mistake".

dustinmoris··on mCaptcha – Proof of work based, privacy respecting CAPTCHA system
This looks like a rate limiting API rather than a Captcha. Captcha is a tool to distinguish automated bots from real users. Let’s not confuse the term like we already did with “crypto” please.
dustinmoris··on Hijacking Email with Cloudflare Email Routing
100% agree. This reflects EXTREMELY BADLY on Cloudflare. This changed my perception almost 180 degrees of what I thought of Cloudflare before. This is not a thing you'd expect devs to do at a moderately important company, let alsone slip through QA, code review and many other checkpoints. The fact that this happened at a company which routes half the internet's traffic through their servers is SUPER worrying. Glad I'm not a CF customer anymore. Never likes them MITM everything.
dustinmoris··on Hijacking Email with Cloudflare Email Routing
Wow did Cloudflare outsource all their development work to some cheap agency or how come they develop features like this with zero security and pretty damn naive, simplistic and childish bugs you wouldn’t expect from a company that routes half of the internet’s traffic through their servers.

dustinmoris··on The Case for C# and .NET
.NET student (aka newbie) <> student in school

And please stop this fake reality bullshit. NOBODY, not a single freaking person who wants to learn a new language will start off by searching the internet for an IDE and debugger where they can apply for a free license and then wait a few days so they can try it out. That is just ridiculous to even suggest.

If one wants to learn a language they download the SDK, open VS Code and look for an extension. If there is none or the one that exists doesn't work they basically say "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT", close it and walk away with the conclusion that it's not well supported. Let's stay real please okay.

dustinmoris··on The Case for C# and .NET
OmniSharp (VS Code extension for C#) has been discontinued and there is no replacement yet. Besides, Microsoft purpusefully sabotaged OmniSharp to make it so unusable that it forces people to use Visual Studio, so even if a beginner on Linux would decide to try C# with a discontinued product they would only face difficulties and a basically horrendous mostly broken experience. .NET on Linux is non existent without Rider and there is no way to sugarcoat this fact. It's sad how ignorant some people are about this and keep peddling untruths about C# that it is well supported on Linux when it isn't.
dustinmoris··on The Case for C# and .NET
The dev experience is Windows only, STILL:

https://news.ycombinator.com/reply?id=32220935&goto=item%3Fi...

(Also the benchmarks are a cheat, look at the source code of C# vs the source code of Go or Java)

dustinmoris··on The Case for C# and .NET
Hottake:

Without JetBrains Rider .NET would have no cross platform dev experience.

VS is shitty Windows bloatware, VS for Mac is utter rubbish and OmniSharp was killed by Microsoft because they didn't fancy to give away dev tools for free and purposefully killed it in order to replace OmniSharp with a closed source extension, which as of today doesn't exist yet. So if you are a Linux developer then you are basically fucked today if you wanted to use .NET, except there is Rider. Without Rider .NET would be completely unattractive today.

If one is okay with this then .NET is amazing. Otherwise I cannot advocate for .NET anymore I am afraid. Microsoft doesn't see what's good for them. VS Code is the future, not VS. They invest too much time and money and marketing in selling VS to developers instead of making VS Code a great free OSS experience.

dustinmoris··on Windows lost market share in the last decade
> Looking at Windows 11 with a brand new perspective, at actually looks decent.

Only if you believe the marketing and Influenza(TM) marketing bullshit. Every Windows user who I know and upgraded to 11 is majorly regretting it. Windows 11 is widely seen as the Windows Vista following Windows 10 by its users.

dustinmoris··on My Poor Experience With Azure (or why I'm sticking with AWS)
I disagree. .NET actually literally is better supported on AWS. But, if what you say were true then that is a reason to never use .NET anymore.
