dustin999··on The Tyranny of Other People’s Vacation Photos (2016)
The fact that so many people are posting updates an hour after starting their vacation really speaks volumes. It just goes to show, people are making decisions about vacations, events, etc. based on how well it will post on Facebook.

I think that's part of the reason ticket prices have gone through the roof for sporting events. Before, you were only motivated to go to a game based on 1) your desire to see the event live, and 2) your immediate circle of friends and family who you could tell.

Now, all of your outer circle of friends, including the people you went to school with, ex's, etc get to see how well you're living life, how successful you are, etc.

It's really quite annoying and obnoxious.

Having taken a break from social media for about 3 months now, I'm realizing just how evil it is.

This is intellectually dishonest.

Here's a great idea: move.

Here's another great idea: homeschool.

If everyone is forced to get vaccinations, then I also think we should ban wifi.

dustin999··on My Adventures with “4K” 2160p and Linux
Yes A 39" monitor is too big for a desktop. If I'm having to move my head all the time while I'm working, that's a no-go for me.
dustin999··on My Adventures with “4K” 2160p and Linux
Dumb question, but which CTF game/mod are you referring to?
dustin999··on My Adventures with “4K” 2160p and Linux
Honest question, do you feel a little ridiculous with that setup? I'm a coder and have 2x24" monitors, and found that to be borderline ridiculous with neck strain, thus the reason I'm going 27". But unless you're running security at a place of business or something with 50 security cams, I can't imagine what you're doing that requires a wall of monitors?
dustin999··on My Adventures with “4K” 2160p and Linux
"The myth I keep hearing is that you must go to larger fonts when scaling up to a 4K monitor. This is not exactly true. Do the math. If you double the screen resolution and at the same time you double the screen width, you have done absolutely nothing to the size of a pixel or the physical size of your fonts."

Yeah but it's a 39" monitor... On your desk! Seriously, I'm all for the largest monitor and resolution and everything else, but there's a point where I'd argue it's just too much. I think a 39" monitor on your desk is crossing that line. I can't imagine the neck strain that's going to occur.

Instead of selling extended warranties, they need to start selling these with chiropractic insurance.

Full disclosure: I just went through several days of research on 1440p vs 4k. I went into it assuming I'd get a 4k monitor, but in the end, opted for the 1440p monitor because I refused to stick a 39" monitor on my desk, and the 28" 4k would require DPI scaling and all that mess.

I'd get a 4k for gaming, assuming I had a rig that could power games at that resolution. Otherwise, I'm happy with my decision to get the Asus PB278Q 1440p monitor.

dustin999··on Obamacare’s web site is really bad
From the article: "Republicans who decided to shut down the government this week rather than relentlessly message against the Affordable Care Act's glitches did the law a great favor."

I thought it was the Senate Democrats voting against the house spending bill that shut the government down?

dustin999··on Polyphasic Sleep
I've never been too successful with polyphasic sleep, at least not the hardcore type (6x20m naps). That said, a lot of very successful people have adopted biphasic sleeping, taking a shorter core nap (4 to 6 hours) with a nap during the day. I think this is a better approach, especially if you're in a field where you use your brain a lot. Taking a 30m nap can do wonders after lunch.
dustin999··on Poll: What is your primary desktop OS?
I've used all 3 over the last several years. My favorite is Linux, but the app support just isn't there. Using free alternatives to apps like Photoshop (face it, Gimp sucks) and Office (LibreOffice sucks) was way too painful for me. Also, no Google Drive client (yes, Insync also sucks and constantly crashed/failed to work properly).

So to me, OSX was the only clear alternative to have a native *nix OS with all of the app support.

I would go back to Linux in a heartbeat if I had the app support. And wine isn't an option either, I don't want to spend countless hours configuring crap and having apps crash on me.

One thing I never did was experiment more with windows and Cygwin.

dustin999··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
I've tried developing on a remote dedicated server via PuTTy, VM under Windows (VMWare and VirtualBox), and a native Linux OS. The native Linux OS destroys the other two options by far. I just couldn't handle the slight delay you get in a VM when it comes to the mouse, keyboard, etc. I just really didn't care for it.
dustin999··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
Agreed with you, totally off topic, but I spend most of my days doing web development. I opted for OSX over Linux because I wanted to run Photoshop (Gimp sucks), native Word/Excel (LibreOffice sucks), etc. and got tired of constantly rebooting to Windows to export an image in Photoshop.
dustin999··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
Whatever you do, DO NOT get an ultrabook with a discrete graphics card to run Linux. As someone else said, it's a pain in the ass, and it actually ruined my Dell XPS 15 that managed to live just long enough to get out of warranty.

I had been running bumblebee for months, and yes, you can install it and make it work and get almost as much battery life out of linux as you get on windows. That said, bumblebee is error prone, sometimes doesn't survive kernel upgrades, etc. Several times I installed basic Ubuntu updates only to find bumblebee was disabled and my battery life gone to hell.

Sounds like an easy fix (just turn bumblebee back on), but in my experience, laptops aren't made to absorb the heat from a discrete graphics card all the time. I'm 90% sure that's why my Dell XPS 15 bit the dust after just a year, due to a shoddy implementation in powering the Nvidia card up on demand.

In my case, I just bought a new system to replace my Dell XPS15, and opted for a 13" Macbook Pro running OSX. If I wasn't running OSX, I'd probably go with an ASUS, again without the discrete card. Get a nice display, with an ultrabook, I think that's extremely important.

dustin999··on Remark: The most efficient inbox in the world?
This is a classic product failure. I went to your page and don't know what problem you're solving of mine. I've adopted a zero-inbox policy for the last several years. What problem are you solving?

Not trying to be a d*, just providing feedback, if you changed your landing page to identify the problem you're solving, it would make more sense. If it's a problem I'm unaware of, you need to convince me that this is a problem I should be worried about.

In the 15s I spent on your site, I couldn't figure out what you guys do, other than you're going to do something with my email (my most personal, prized possession on the internet).
