durpleDrank··on Apple was overtaken by Huawei in global smartphone sales
Not the biggest Apple fan but I've never had a good experience with $200 phones from Aliexpress/Gearbest. I always end up returning them. A lot of the times they come with weird "Android" portal OS's. Meaning you can't really access the play store normally and annoying things like that.

There is mandatory bloatware that you can't remove for services that not many westerners know about. Even the microphone and cameras are usually crappy on these. I switched from using a xiaomi redmi 5 to an old Galaxy S4, and the S4 is so much better. Even though the specs are A LOT lower, the S4 had better Microphone processing, better Camera (although not as many mega pixels), and believe it or not less restrictive bloatware.

I realize all these products are made in China, I just want to tell a cautionary tale. The PRICE is right but I think the manufactures don't really understand QUALITY and CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE the way Apple does.

durpleDrank··on Ask HN: Any good examples of learning through games/puzzles, for adults?
When I would meet non English speakers they always told me they learned English by playing FINAL FANTASY on super nintendo. One day, after several attempts at learning another language it dawned on me "Why don't I play Final Fantasy in -INSERT LANGUAGE YOU WANT TO LEARN HERE". It works like a charm and you'll find the "translation barrier" will be removed very quickly.

durpleDrank··on Why I quit my dream job at Ubisoft
I used to work beside UBISOFT here in Montreal. I'd here them talk about videogames during lunch time and it was pitiful. It seemed like having colored hair and geek-chic was more important than actually knowing anything about videogames.
durpleDrank··on Why we love repetition in music
I cringed reading that. There were a lot of people using that technique long before BT. Max/Msp, csound, and many other programs allowed user to do this. Not to mention the old amiga scene trackers and old jungle artists with their "trackers".

durpleDrank··on OK Cupid launches Crazy Blind Date
A word of caution about OK cupid. The emails they send out for your QUIVER MATCHES actually have your login credentials embedded in the URL. Meaning, if you right click, copy link address, and send the url to your friend, THEY ARE NOW LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT.

I learned the hardway, I pasted one of these links into an 80+ chat room full of 4chan rejects on IRC.

durpleDrank··on A year without caffeine
Used to drink 2 redbulls and a ton of coffee everyday. Soy Lattes were my fav. Towards the end of my caffine run I was getting a shot of espresso put into my coffee.

Anyway, about 5 months ago I got a huge pain in my abdomen, fast forward a few weeks I had a mild stroke says my doctor. I can't eat anything acidic now or else my body goes into weird fits. Seeing doctors etc. It sucks :P

I miss coffee so much, but being off it so long I realized it's not as good of a pick me up as I used to think. Naps are superior to coffee.

durpleDrank··on Congress, at Last Minute, Drops Requirement to Obtain Warrant to Monitor Email
Didn't they do the same dirty trick for the federal reserve act ? Basically all of congress is home with their families, and only a few people (who most likely want to see the change (for whatever reason AHEM)) show up to to vote.

You'd think Amazon would have done something since the last big outage. They just don't care do they ?
durpleDrank··on Tricks to better public speaking
Being a music guy, I've played a load of shows in front of hundreds of people. There are a couple of things I've learned over the years that I'll share.

1 second feels like an hour. There were times where I remember a very uncomfortable moment in a set but when I played the video back later, it was really all in my head. It's ok to pause/wait. Don't let a 3 second silence anxiety snowball into something that will throw you off the rest of your set/talk.

They are there to see YOU. There is no reason to be nervous. People really don't care, they just want to get to the destination. You are driving the car. Present with purpose. You don't have to be some toast masters grand master. You need to have the conviction of someone who is up to bat. Like it's YOUR TURN and a line of 40 people are behind you. Go do your thing and dont dilly dally about it.

30 minutes TOPS. When in doubt, be like the Ramones. Do not go over 30 minutes. Don't give the villain speech. Convey as much action and pragmatic appeal as possible. Be blunt and concise. It's a street fight, not a fencing match.

Talk to the back of the room, and look at the back wall (focusing on people in the audience can throw you off).

TL;DR Go up there and own it. That's your platform, deliver a solid message.

durpleDrank··on New PlayStation 3 Hack May Be One That Sony Can’t Stop
As someone who bought his PS3 only for the bluray player and the ability to have linux on his tv in one little box, and after doing hours of research to verify it was a legit feature (only to have it stripped less then a year later) I find it impossible to empathize with sony.
durpleDrank··on AWS issues, affecting Heroku and others
Been getting crap loads of alerts stemming from their North Virginia data centre. Got 9 of these yesterday ...

"You are receiving this email because your Amazon CloudWatch Alarm "awsec2-WM-Live1-i-8747ece1-High-CPU-Utilization" in the US - N. Virginia region has entered the ALARM state, because "Threshold Crossed: 1 datapoint (93.13) was greater than or equal to the threshold (85.0)." at ."

Maybe their data centre was over run by mutants ?

durpleDrank··on Shuttleworth: Why Windows 8 made us ditch GPL Linux loader
They didn't even contact the FSF to discuss the matter. FSF wrote a white paper about this and stated that the GPL would not force them to release the public key. Also, does anyone really believe UEFI is not going to be compromised ? The entire thing ridiculous. It's a power grab, and a lot of leaders in the open sourced movement are going to come out of this looking like a pack of fools.
