durpleDrank··on Japan's PM to ask all schools to temporarily close
Seriously though. That guy who comes into work sick to show us all he is 100% committed is completely bonkers. WORK REMOTELY if you need to flex how big your dedication is. Maybe throw a Calvin and Hobbes sticker on your car windshield while you're being so insecure and putting peoples health at risk.
durpleDrank··on Reading a book a week for your career
I agree with this. Even YouTube tends to have 5 minute summaries.

durpleDrank··on GitLab Handbook
Their handbook is better documentation than what they offer for the product.
durpleDrank··on Early riser or night owl? New study may help to explain the difference
Long story but I recently got very sick. I was told not to eat past 6pm. I found this really helped me with falling asleep. Turn on some music around 10 and lay in bed. Read a book. I keep some Tums next to my bed (acid reflux also impacts my "sleepiness"). I guess what I'm trying to say is that changing how I ate and just chilling in bed under the covers at an earlier time really helped. I'm still a night owl for sure, but this does combat the ratio of staying up till 2am to being asleep by 12. If I really tell my mind with my internal monologue "Look, I know we want to play videogames and do the dishes, but let's do that in the morning" and also craving breakfast before bed (so you are excited to wake up early to eat) helps.
durpleDrank··on Amazon let a fraudster keep my Sony A74 IV and refunded him
Amazon FBA is a joke. I tried it for a year. Experienced a couple of instances like OP. Customer service at Amazon is an ineffective joke when it comes to these matters as well. Fees are too high etc. Believe the hype of YouTube "entrepreneurs" at your own peril.
durpleDrank··on Amish Hackers (2009)
The comment section of the article is filled with funny bot spam, worth a glance for a chuckle. Guys advertising "whatsapp hacking" services with a "customer" replying to the ad vouching for them.
durpleDrank··on The Economics of Clean Code
True. On the flip side I think "clean code" is supposed to imply a particular type of coding popularized by people like Uncle Bob. When people say clean code, I don't think of tabs vs spaces etc. I think "Oh this guy codes to Bob Martin's spec".
durpleDrank··on Wacom tablets track every app you open
"Off topic, but would you be willing to expand on your Linux experiences with this?"

I'm using a Wacom Intuos pen & touch M graphics tablet, connected to a Thinkpad 430. Over the years I was using Debian Stable, MINT, and finally Ubuntu.

The experience is great. Like I mentioned, much better than windows. I only just started to use Krita (I prefer MyPaint, however I feel I should branch out). The work I do isn't special, just stupid doodles and cartoon type of stuff. The wacom I'm using is older, I think I bought it 5 years ago or so.

I don't really have much to add besides that. I remember WAYYY back in the day having to compile the driver myself for an older wacom (Ubuntu 6 or 7 era). It's practically plug and play now, however, I think there is some other apt-get stuff that I did once for some reason that I forget (eraser wasn't working?). If you are having issues maybe try another tablet. I think the one I have can be bought for $50 on ebay. Maybe try a 30 day return place like best buy and sorry to say try the latest ubuntu or mint for compatibility (have a dedicated art machine?)

durpleDrank··on Wacom tablets track every app you open
Saw this two nights ago installing the driver on Windows 10. Read the UELA. Did not consent, closed the window. Is that good enough?

By the way, My tablet works MUCH BETTER on Ubuntu and Mint than on Windows 10. Krita and MyPaint are cross platform so I might just do my art on a *nix box instead.

OH NO! PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO START USING SKEPTICISM AND CRITICAL THINKING WHEN WATCHING VIDEOS FROM SHADY PARTS OF THE INTERNET!
durpleDrank··on Why I Procrastinate (2019)
" ... I don't have to worry about keeping ..."

This is key. I don't care if I miss a few weeks because of being lazy. I know my life/future/path/journey is ready to start again when I get tired of being disorganized.

durpleDrank··on The Internet of Beefs
"missiles in a beef war" I love this phrase.
durpleDrank··on Total sleep deprivation impairs attention and higher-order cognitive processes
I wonder if there is evidence that the brain adapts? I too have been having sleep problems due to a heavy footed night owl neighbor. In the beginning it was an issue, however, I found over the last two years my body kicks into a type of an overdrive and overcomes this. Obviously it's not good, however, I do notice a type of compensation.

durpleDrank··on Show HN: Borg Voice Generator
It would be fun if you could generate a link with a hash of a message so you can send it to your friends and coworkers with a silly message that autoplays.
durpleDrank··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
If Google starts renting games it's competition for other mass market paradigms. Buying digital downloads will be niche. I have a balls to the wall gaming PC and plenty of consoles, however, I don't want to spend 90$ every other week to see the hot new game everyone is talking about. $5 for a weekend rental is great for me (matches blockbusters old $4.75 weekend rental fee). A little lag won't be an issues especially considering most new games are story driven cakewalks anyway.
durpleDrank··on TikTok hits 1.5B downloads, outperforming Instagram
Astroturfed or not TikTok has excellent creators (for now anyway I'm sure it will be ruined as it becomes more popular if history teaches us anything about fads). Just go watch a TikTok compilation on YouTube if you want to get the best parts of it without downloading the app. It's easy to burn 1-2 hours mindlessly watching absurd videos.

I really shouldn't be saying this because I'm not a big fan of Facebook, but if someone at FB HQ is racking their brain for a solution to destroy TikTok it is very very easy. Do what you did to destroy your own product. Create an influx of lame people to produce content for it. When the "For You" page of TikTok is just un-ironic minion memes and Karen levels of "Live, Love, Laugh" people won't use it much longer.

durpleDrank··on Google plans to partner with banks to offer checking accounts
Imagine having your entire life ruined (not being able to purchase food, pay your rent and or bills on time, etc) because you merely WATCHED a video that politically doesn't align with the majority of their employees? You are practically asking children to watch over your money at that point.

durpleDrank··on A Chinese social credit song
Devils advocate here, is it safe to say that capitalism is a type of credit system that allows upward mobility except for it is based on greed and not being "trust worthy"?

I dunno there is a part of me that wishes the propaganda was true. It would be nice to live in a world where everyone is nice and respectful of each other. No lying, no cheating, etc. I'm sure that it's not implemented well at all in China, and resembles more of a Police State hellscape than anything but there is a part of me wishes that bad landlord I had or that person who ripped me off etc weren't able to get away with it so easily.

durpleDrank··on The speed reading fallacy: the case for slow reading
Read the first sentence of a paragraph, and the last. You'd be surprised how much crap goes in the middle. Not so great for important stuff, but if you need to zip through something quick it's a good trick.
durpleDrank··on Amazon AWS had a power failure, their backup generators failed
Is this North Virginia AGAIN???? How ironic that a company named "Amazon" cannot keep it's servers up when ever there is rain. This has happened practically every time hurricane season appears. Obviously being a bit hard on them (for humor) but come on guys, get a giant umbrella or something.
durpleDrank··on Microsoft Is Killing ePub Support in Edge Classic
No kidding. I was just thinking about that last night!
durpleDrank··on Vegetarians Who Turned into Butchers
OP's implications were in the context of a modern factory farm. You are describing the life of a cow on an old fashioned farm. Not existing is objectively better than being raised for veal. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with factory farming, I honestly don't recommend going down the animal lib rabbit hole it's incredibly depressing. It's a water slide of cognitive dissonance until you hit rock bottom and realize there needs to be reform.
durpleDrank··on MITM on HTTPS traffic in Kazakhstan

I could of sworn there are instances where root authorities had brush ins with the law, maybe I'm just remembering a theoretical rant I heard somewhere.

durpleDrank··on US asks allies to avoid Huawei
I don't want to be that guy but as scary and threatening as this all sounds if you just flip the script you can gain some empathy for citizens of every country the NSA spied on. For once, Americans and Europeans are starting to fear the same "invasion" that the rest of the world has been feeling for a while now. I just hope my countries team wins I guess?
durpleDrank··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
Honestly, they are screwed once people start using ali express instead. I know shipping times is a bit long, but I'm sure there will be some solution to this in the future. I wouldn't be surprised they built their own fulfillment centers on the continent.
durpleDrank··on Pocket’s 30M Users Are Great for Publishers
I recently switched from Pocket to Instapaper. Instapaper is more stable without a doubt. When I used the pocket app on my phone, MULTIPLE PHONES/TABLETS (at least 5), I would get stuck in home screen loops that I was unable to exit out of without rebooting. I tried contacting their support but they were not effective. When it works, it was my favorite app. I got top %5 reader awards from them 3 years in a row.

I would have gladly paid for a premium edition but their lack of support, victim blaming, and passive aggressive responses to features I suggested left me with a bad taste in my mouth. So far, Instapaper is everything I was hoping pocket to be. The text to speech feature actually works, it's stable, and the interface is much cleaner and easier to use.

I don't usually write yelp tier reviews like this on HN but I figured I would express myself just in case someone has the same sentiment as me (they should immediately switch to Instapaper).

It is night and day in terms of quality.
