duncangh··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
this is well intentioned but bad advice for people with shoulder issues. The shoulder should not be put under load such as weight lifting.

I would recommend doing band work and calisthenics and also highly recommend analyzing your kinetic chain and form in any activity you do and figure out how to reduce shoulder arm and wrist for any force generation in sports such as tennis, golf, throwing etc.

After playing college tennis and developing bad shoulder issues with MRI indicating that surgery would be recommended. Two years prior my high school friend had had the same surgery and ultimately developed a opioid dependence during the crises and subsequently died of an overdose after 18 months of spiraling.

I ultimately was able to attribute the onset of flare ups to weeks where I was hitting a lot of serves and at first simply instituted a “pitch count” and later studied my form and discovered that I was not loading as much as I should have been from the base of my kinetic chain and a lot of that load was being put on my shoulder.

About 12 years later and I’ve recently switched to pickleball (no over head serve) and jokingly refer to myself as a tennis refugee.

duncangh··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
I’be been similarly interested and long ruminating about whether it would be possible to achieve something similar to this in the restaurant industry. For example to have a non profit operating a franchise of a fast food location and instead of having thw 20% corporate tax rate and profit going towards retained earnings and dividends to instead be reinvested in the mission which would be better, more nutritious ingredients to better healthily feed your local customers and two to provide the staff a livable wage. Like you, I keep turning it over in my head and contemplating it rather passively as it’s way outside of my lane of Data Engineering, but I’d like to think that the market would eventually identify this as viable if it at all would be. With the ever looming fear of layoffs and future of future employment in writing software I keep thinking about that scene of the firing in “Up In The Air” where the guy they let go had always dreamt of being a chef and was finally able to pursue it after getting laid off from his high paying job that he had come to hate. Typed on my phone with my cat on my lap ; so plz excuse any run on sentences or imperfections.

duncangh··on Show HN: Bribes.fyi – Compare bribes statistics department wise
If I were a corrupt official in one of the departments I would simply use a vpn and submit a bunch of data for my specific specialty all across the country and then slightly fewer in my own department to drive demand and set market expectations

duncangh··on The main way I've seen people turn ideologically crazy (2025)
Veganism is so polarizing because on some level I think most if not all people understand that they are philosophically correct and that veganism is thus the morally right thing to do and those (like me) who still refuse to do it must live with themselves and their immoral choices every time they are confronted by a vegan or reminded of the feasibility of veganism
duncangh··on The Philippines' big offshoring industry is growing despite AI
“Hospitals in America are increasingly outsourcing the checking of insurance eligibility and filing of medical records to Filipinos packing AI tools. Mr Gallimore says”

How is this HIPPA compliant? Please tell me there’s an aspect of HIPPA that requires sensitive data to be only accessed and processed by Americans on shore. You’d think the multiples we pay on health care for worse outcomes would at least be supporting our own domestic middle class with this sort of basic back office white collar work

duncangh··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
Yeah this seems to me similar to how the mortgage backed security risk concentration occurred leading up to the global financial crisis. Whereby the risk from exposure to low grade / risky single mortgages was eliminated via diversification but the diversification was simply packaging all of the risky MBS’s together and in no way diversified or de-risked the entire portfolio

Pressed the kiosk some time ago but watching the sun begin to arc towards setting it does appear the world can change a lot in 30 seconds.

duncangh··on Handbook.md shows that long policy documents do not reliably govern agents
simonw has been correctly asserting that there is no deterministic way to prevent hallucinations. I’d argue that this obstinance could be the seed of a strong argument in favor of their capacity to eventually coalesce some form of consciousness

duncangh··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
My dad is an English professor and wrote his first manuscript turned book on a typewriter much to his editor’s dismay in the late 1990s. He used to compel me to type my Christmas wishlist / letter to Santa on it as well perhaps with the added benefit of reducing its length.
duncangh··on How Many Elementary Particles Are There, Really?
This and not being able to divide by 0 in math always drove me up the wall in school. Encountering a god level difficulty unsolved problem in the first 5 minutes of discussion around the basics of the field and then shrugging and continuing to build castles of complexity atop the seemingly rickety foundation irrationally irked me.

Feels good to get that off my Chest. I’ve been holding it in for ~20 years

duncangh··on US-Iran memorandum of understanding in full
Prescient

From the live updates of the war on the NYT 11 minutes ago and around 15 mins after you wrote this:

“””Mideast Live Updates: Iranian Forces Say They Closed Strait of Hormuz Iran’s military command blamed the U.S., saying it failed to prevent Israel from violating the cease-fire in Lebanon. Mediators in Pakistan said “technical talks” between the U.S. and Iran to end the war would be held on Sunday.”””

duncangh··on Only 16 Percent of Americans Think AI Will Have a Positive Impact on Society
I fear that at this rate the oligarchs will use medical breakthroughs to keep us alive and laboring against our and nature’s will like what industrial farming has done to chickens and other livestock

duncangh··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
Idk I feel like Ansible and RHEL aim to give you that control in a way that’s not typically corporate icky in the way you describe but ymmv. Granted both are products based on FOSS; so in the broader sense that pattern may hold
duncangh··on After AI takes everything
Interested to read more about this particular crossroads of copyright case law.

Also does the last sentence reflect (at least in part) what you describe (in partial jest?) in the last sentence? Iirc artists previously had to call to get permission from original owner of songs samples and I remember hearing anecdotes like Kanye promising someone he wouldn’t swear in a song with the sample of it were used (and I think most of ye’s samples constitute fair use but not sure). Anyways, you seem knowledgeable to joke about this ultra niche so thought I would ask ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

duncangh··on I indexed 669 GB of my GoPro videos using my M1 Max computer and local ML models
Would it be possible to upload them all to YouTube as unlisted and then point Gemini to them? Not sure the limitations wrt unlisted videos. Maybe also could’ve been done with the @google photos operator if uploaded to Google Photos if not a corporate google workspace Gemini instance
duncangh··on Actually, democracy dies in H.R.
Reminds me of the poem / song “All I wanna do”

"All I wanna do is have a little fun before I die" Says the man next to me out of nowhere It's apropos of nothing, he says his name is William I'm sure he's Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy And he's plain ugly to me And I wonder if he's ever had a day of fun in his whole life We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday In a bar that faces a giant car wash The good people of the world Are washing their cars on their lunch break Hosing and scrubbing as best they can in skirts in suits

duncangh··on Show HN: Tolaria – Open-source macOS app to manage Markdown knowledge bases
I have a question about markdown on MacBook Pro. You know the preview feature - I think it’s called quick quicklook - how can I get that to work for markdown? I’ve associated .md files to always open with my IDE, but they still don’t render with the preview which is a mild annoyance. In my IDE i do use an extension to render the Md so that could be why and I could understand why recursive invocation may not be exposed at or available to the preview extension level. But any suggestions?
duncangh··on French government agency confirms breach as hacker offers to sell data
It’s kind of interesting that this happens so shortly after they proudly announced how easily they would’ve able to migrate all systems from Microsoft and US firms. Maybe next year will be the year of the Linux desktop
duncangh··on Show HN: Faceoff – A terminal UI for following NHL games
I love this - watching the hurricanes game right now! Autorefresh would be nice and then it looks like a small bug in the faceoff percentage as they both say 100% which shouldn't be possible at any point in the game. Also would be sick to be able to enter the team and roster detail page from within the game detail page. But I love this so much and appreciate you for building it :D

edit the face off percentage is still a little off it's updated to show this 87% - 67%. Also followed you on twitter and github.
