duncangh··on For thirty years I programmed with Phish on, every day
Can we get the link to that TikTok? lol

Also what do you think about goose

duncangh··on Show HN: Tolaria – Open-source macOS app to manage Markdown knowledge bases
I have a question about markdown on MacBook Pro. You know the preview feature - I think it’s called quick quicklook - how can I get that to work for markdown? I’ve associated .md files to always open with my IDE, but they still don’t render with the preview which is a mild annoyance. In my IDE i do use an extension to render the Md so that could be why and I could understand why recursive invocation may not be exposed at or available to the preview extension level. But any suggestions?
duncangh··on French government agency confirms breach as hacker offers to sell data
It’s kind of interesting that this happens so shortly after they proudly announced how easily they would’ve able to migrate all systems from Microsoft and US firms. Maybe next year will be the year of the Linux desktop
duncangh··on Show HN: Faceoff – A terminal UI for following NHL games
I love this - watching the hurricanes game right now! Autorefresh would be nice and then it looks like a small bug in the faceoff percentage as they both say 100% which shouldn't be possible at any point in the game. Also would be sick to be able to enter the team and roster detail page from within the game detail page. But I love this so much and appreciate you for building it :D

edit the face off percentage is still a little off it's updated to show this 87% - 67%. Also followed you on twitter and github.

duncangh··on Cal.com is going closed source
Lmao I love this flavor of the ‘tism that always surfaces in hn comment threads exactly like this. Like moths to a flame
duncangh··on Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
Good news: this cat and mouse game is keeping some of our brothers / sisters in software employed at FAANG. I feel like the girl from the kombucha reaction gif weighing both sides in this back and forth rally lol
duncangh··on Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence
This is my favorite type of interaction to see when browsing HN. I feel like this respectful mosh pit of ideas and practitioners is uniquely rad. Thanks for the serendipity dopamine this Sunday
duncangh··on Layoffs at Block
Chopping block
duncangh··on Show HN: Hacker Smacker – Spot great (and terrible) HN commenters at a glance
hacker smacker smacked down
duncangh··on AIs can't stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations
Probably because we all start cyber bullying every model when they give us code that doesn’t work. Sorry, Claude - please don’t nuke us.
duncangh··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
This is incredibly resonant
duncangh··on Claude Code is being dumbed down?
Dyslexic and also a prolific screen reader user myself. +1 and thank you for mentioning something that often gets (ironically) overlooked
duncangh··on Claude Code is being dumbed down?
This verbose mode discussion has gotten quite verbose lol
duncangh··on Hard-braking events as indicators of road segment crash risk
Driving and living in Atlanta after living in Charleston and Raleigh felt like transitioning from a modern cooperative society to an island of cannibals. The amount of aggression needed to change lanes largely regardless of attempts to signal good faith and politeness is baffling. Driving is a fascinating ritual with vastly differing norms across regions. It would be interesting to learn if anthropologists have studied this
duncangh··on Procedures for Repair of Potholes in Asphalt-Surfaced Pavements
I like Atlanta’s solution even better: after becoming egregious enough sloppily bolt down a much too tall metal plate over the pothole and those that have proliferated nearby. Cross fingers and hope they won’t coalesce as a sink hole and as with everything else: “Go Dawgs”
duncangh··on 1 kilobyte is precisely 1000 bytes?
the type of screw head really doesn't make a difference when I'm hammering them into the wall, I've found xD
duncangh··on Show HN: I'm building an AI-proof writing tool. How would you defeat it?
10,000 chimpanzees with typewriters. Do you accept telefacsimile submissions? I’ll try to train them to use appropriate cover letters
duncangh··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
They should’ve named him tom instead of Claude in homage to Ten second Tom from fifty first dates
duncangh··on What happened to Apple's legendary attention to detail?
We’re moving away from hardware and into software and longevity in this discussion but wrt “apple leads the industry in supporting older devices with software updates” i would point out that Red Hat is probably more of a beacon / industry leader here as the main promise of RHEL is 10 years of support and updates. But again we don’t ship hardware so I see the narrower sense that you’re making but still would like to push back on the idea that giant companies cannot continue to keep complicated legacy code bases secure and functional about 2x longer in most cases than what Apple has done
duncangh··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
4:20 PM - nice
duncangh··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
Have you considered taking up your hobby in Afghanistan? Somewhat tongue in cheek, but a locality under the Taliban have ratified a morality law that bans photography of living things https://apnews.com/article/afghanistan-taliban-media-moralit...
duncangh··on Hosting a website on a disposable vape
Getting a 503 error now upon request to the vape hosted blog. Safe to say that it got smoked by the hacker news traffic volume!
duncangh··on Mark Zuckerberg freezes AI hiring amid bubble fears
Sorry I’m late to this conversation but am very interested in the specifics of your comment and the micro domain of AI in studio productions and the econs of the bidding landscape as well. Contact in bio :)
duncangh··on Trump Administration Plans Changes to Skilled Worker Visas and Citizenship Tests

duncangh··on Trump Administration Plans Changes to Skilled Worker Visas and Citizenship Tests
Gift link - should be able to read without subscription
duncangh··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
both of my claims were subjective and thus not really refutable. As an outsider I think it is interesting, too. And think the flexibility is similar to many laws akin to what we have in the US via prosecutorial discretion

I should’ve included a source to where I read about it initially and that’s below

duncangh··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
The taliban actually have a fascinatingly (philosophically) based law where it’s illegal to photograph a living thing. I’m not sure about the reason. Maybe derived from the not being okay to depict Mohammed. But I kind of dig the concept especially for living things that can’t consent to be captured in images
duncangh··on Ask HN: Is it time to fork HN into AI/LLM and "Everything else/other?"
simon how do you get so much done? It’s incredible. Would love to see the day in the life TikTok :P
duncangh··on NIST ion clock sets new record for most accurate clock
Imagine trying to set your oven and microwave clock to line up with it precisely after they reset from a power outage
duncangh··on Private sector lost 33k jobs, badly missing expectations of 100k increase
I have been thinking about this a lot recently as well and think there is a really simple answer and fix and am frustrated I haven’t seen it meaningfully attempted or discussed anywhere (passively consuming message boards etc)

Cash flow per person (per household) just like the IRS does (except also including money from loans).
