dudeinjapan··on Satya Nadella says we should assume all AI models are 'compromised'
Microsoft invented those principles when they added UAC to Windows Vista. Also, Al Gore invented the Internet.

ELI5 why he needs to please the Dutch royal family?
dudeinjapan··on CIA World Facebook Is Dead – Here Is an Attempt at Recreation
CIA Factbook was mundane things like population, land area, system of govt, major exports, etc. Stuff that is now on the right-hand sidebar of Wikipedia. Presumably it was made for US govt employees to have a basic understanding of other countries. It was useful to do a 7th grade research report on Uzbekistan circa 1997.
dudeinjapan··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
AI math: "We believe this resolves all remaining questions on this topic. No further research is needed." https://xkcd.com/2268/
dudeinjapan··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
The issue is not that SAML is XML per se, but rather: (1) auth happens over public internet rather than server-to-server, allowing the user to MITM the message flow and (2) the various XML parsing libs in various languages do not have consistent behavior when it comes to looking up a node by name (i.e. if there are dupes) or finding a child node. MITM can exploit these divergences for auth bypasses, etc.

A SAML lib needs an extreme amount of XML sanitization, while still handling all the various “in-the-wild” XML format funkiness

It’s what old cowboys do when they get Alzheimer’s.
dudeinjapan··on If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it
Arxiv is a good blueprint for what we should build on. Terry Tao gave a recent talk about how "canonicalization" is the key bottleneck. The limitation of Arxiv is that is non-canonical, non-peer reviewed. However, there is no reason that journals should have a monopoly on peer review (it should be noted that peer reviewers aren't even directly compensated for it, granted it is supposedly "priced in" to academic salaries.)
dudeinjapan··on If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it
The issue here is not AI--it's academic papermill culture and paywalled journals.

AI gives us greater freedom to "stop and smell the roses", explore hidden structures, etc in mathematics. It is a dream come true for curious minds.

dudeinjapan··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
Sounds like the plot for Good Will Hunting 2.
dudeinjapan··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
I'd talk to your Amazon rep and see if you can get them to agree to $800 million as a compromise. They are usually pretty good at that stuff.

There will be fewer good mathematicians, but more great mathematicians!

dudeinjapan··on Ancient Tablets Show Markets Worked 4k Years Before Economists Explained Them
Also, should we capitalize the "C" in "Capitalism"? One might think we should, because C is a capital letter. But capital itself is lowercase, and therein lies the paradox.

I'm looking for the tablet that says "We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune..."
dudeinjapan··on Quebec town recognizes trees as living beings with rights
You're forgetting about property taxes (adverse possession / squatter's rights.)
dudeinjapan··on Quebec town recognizes trees as living beings with rights
In rare cases, yes. https://nypost.com/2009/04/16/small-tree-found-growing-insid...
dudeinjapan··on Quebec town recognizes trees as living beings with rights
No, they are tax cheats. It has been notoriously hard to arrest them and send them to jail however.
dudeinjapan··on Genuinely, my all-time favourite image: Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis
meh just put the head on the end of the tail, a lot less effort and no one will be any the wiser.
dudeinjapan··on Splash Is a Colour Format
> Splash colours can help you avoid decision paralysis when picking colours. It's an emotional tool that stops you fussing around— trying to pick the "perfect" colour.

OK I missed this. The intro paragraph explains "what" not "why". As this "why" is not immediately obvious (nor is something I've ever considered a "problem"), would suggest to put something short in the intro.

dudeinjapan··on Splash Is a Colour Format
The site doesn't explain--what's the actual point of this? If we are seriously concerned about characters (which is generally silly in a gzipped CSS) why not just use 3-char hex like #a5c?
dudeinjapan··on Snowboard Kids 2 is 100% Decompiled
Was recently discussing N64 games with friends in Japan. Nobody here knew Goldeneye.
dudeinjapan··on Snowboard Kids 2 is 100% Decompiled
This is a game released in 1999. It's silly that source code isn't released for games this old.
dudeinjapan··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
The elephant in the room is AI. The frontier LLMs seem to prefer Tailwind by default. And they do a good job with it--likely because coupling style definitions to your HTML document structure is the least overhead way for an LLM to write code. The alternative--reasoning about a platonic ideal CSS structure, mapping the document structure to that an inferring how the layout will look, then juggling all that while making iterative edits--is a lot more "cognitive" work!
dudeinjapan··on Japan’s robot wolf sells out as record bear attacks drive demand
> The robot scarecrows are used to ward off bears in rural areas

Two thoughts on this captioned image: (1) holy $&!# that is horrifying (2) if its designed to ward off bears, isn't it a scarebear?

dudeinjapan··on We don't know why Malawi is poor

dudeinjapan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
I think he means an owl that gets progressively angrier/sadder/more emotionally manipulative if you stop counting cards.

dudeinjapan··on SatoshiGuesser – Roll for Bitcoin
The honest thing to do is to return the key you found to its owner Satoshi Nakamoto.
dudeinjapan··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
Sure there are misbehaving companies. But the solution should not be to block PRs from employees at well-behaved companies like mine. Instead the govt should clamp down directly on the bad behavior. Japan has mastered the art of ignoring real problems, and attacking substitute/scapegoat problems instead.
dudeinjapan··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
You mean immigration lawyer covering his ass? Possibly. It wouldn't be the staff member.
dudeinjapan··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
No, I'm American. I was working as a quant trader in Tokyo (originally Lehman Brothers, then Nomura) and I was laid off from my job, and with nothing else do I decided to found a company in Tokyo. 13 years later I'm still here with ~300 staff now.
