ducttape12··on TV meteorologist objected to management’s ‘code red’ orders
I heard a great quote once: Local news exists to scare the elderly.
ducttape12··on Advertising may make people miserable, but it still has its uses
If I'm in the market for a product, if a company makes a decent product chances are I'll find out about it by reading reviews, etc. I don't need ads for that.

Ads exist to make me spend money that I wouldn't otherwise spend.

ducttape12··on Free Is Too High a Price for Facebook and Google
At least on mobile, Brave is reporting blocking 32 ads and trackers.
ducttape12··on Attempt to plug a wasp nest sparked the biggest wildfire in California history
This guy must feel horrible. "What if I had just left the wasp nest and went to lunch instead?" "What if I had called 911 earlier?" "What if I had used bug spray instead?"
ducttape12··on Should array length be stored into a local variable in C#?
I write first for readability and performance second. Not to say that performance isn't important (and of course I pay attention to O notation), but throwing a little more memory and CPU power at a web page is far cheaper and easier than spending developer time reading code.
ducttape12··on Should array length be stored into a local variable in C#?
Always accessing array.Length is defensively coding. In the event your array is mutated, always accessing array.Length ensures you won't run into an Index Out of Bounds exception.

Even better is to just avoid accessing the array's length. I almost always use foreach or Linq.

ducttape12··on Plotty Bird: flappy bird on the HP7440A pen plotter
Looks like Dong Nguyen's company has been making some games since: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DotGears
ducttape12··on Fatal Dose – Radiation Deaths linked to AECL Computer Errors (1994)
I remember hearing about this case in college. My professor's point was don't trust software alone. Always include hardware safe guards when it comes to safety.
ducttape12··on A man who ran out of air at the bottom of the ocean
> They now use emergency tanks that carry 40 minutes of air rather than five.

Glad to see the change, but why even carry a tank with 5 minutes of reserve? Might as well just plan on holding your breath in that case.

ducttape12··on If I ingest a grain of sand size piece of the Chernobyl Reactor No.4 core
Now you tell me! What are you going to tell me next, that yellowcake isn't made from flour?
ducttape12··on Why Software Sucks
It's always bothered me how software teams view internal and external users differently. We'll spend lavishly on designing an amazing experience for customers... But internal users are stuck clicking through 500 VB6 forms to get anything done.

Companies forget that selling more isn't the only way to make money; cutting internal costs can also make you more money. A happy team is a productive team, and a streamlined team is a productive team. More productivity means less people you have to hire and train.

But hey, that comes out of a different budget and our internal people are already being paid peanuts, so work on this feature the sales team claims will help them sell more. Operations people are just there to clean up the crap no one else will, right? (/sarcasm)

ducttape12··on Undervalued Engineering Skills: Writing Well
I think any therapist who specializes in anxiety would be a good fit. Some studies show CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) to be as effective as medicine.

www.psychologytoday.com has a search for finding local therapists. I'd start there.

And good luck! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

ducttape12··on Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform app dream is dead and buried
One of the big problems was UWP's cross-platform approach was too narrow. The problem isn't writing across all Microsoft platforms, the problem is writing across all platforms, such as iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, etc. Platforms like Ionic solve those problems; UWP does not.

Not to mention how it was basically a more restricted WPF (which already is an over-engineered, confusing mess)

ducttape12··on Bing’s Not the Laughingstock of Technology Anymore
I've said it before and I'll say it again - replacing Balmer with Nadella was one of the best things they've done.

People go on and on about Facebook and Google, but I've been really impressed with Microsoft. They're making some really great, innovative products - and they're turning a nice profit too.

(yes, I realize Bing is just a Google clone, but I'm talking more generally about the company)

ducttape12··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users
Brave isn't a fork, they take the tagged build of Chromium and apply their own patches.

I'm guessing this will make its way into Brave, but their built in ad and privacy blockers should continue to function.

ducttape12··on The 15-Year Layover (2003)
Some may write him off as a crazy person, but he sounds like a broken man who just gave up. Life fell apart and no where to call home...
ducttape12··on Anxiety might be alleviated by regulating gut bacteria
Considering SSRIs are prescribed for IBS (the gut has a lot of serotonin in it) and anxiety disorders (the brain also uses serotonin), I could see this being related.
ducttape12··on New Swiss studies claim 5G increases body temperature of insects
I haven't much looked into 5G. Considering that 95% of the time I'm on WiFi anyway, I really don't get this push for faster and faster mobile speeds. (especially if there's potential to damage wildlife and us with it)
ducttape12··on Do not tell your expected salary. Let a company make an offer first
I've always just given my current salary when I'm asked about compensation. Yes, it somewhat anchors me, but it ensures that the recruiters / company I'm talking to and I aren't wasting our time and it doesn't force me to give a range.

Also, don't be afraid to walk away from a position if they're under cutting you. My current role did that; I told them no. They called back a day later and brought me in at a higher position with higher pay (but oddly enough no real change in responsibilities)

ducttape12··on Making a Game Boy Game in 2017
Curiosity got me - why don't you have internet at home?
ducttape12··on The Milkman Model Returns, This Time for Shampoo and Haagen-Dazs
Something like this really could have an impact on reducing garbage. Combine this with more and more people switching to grocery delivery and it could actually work!
ducttape12··on Microsoft’s First Windows XP Patch in Years Is a Bad Sign
XP has been out of support for 5 years. I get it, IT is hard and expensive, but you've had 5 years (and multiple years leading up to it) to find a solution. At this point it's your fault, not Microsoft's or your software vendor's.
ducttape12··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
I've struggled with this idea - almost everything (outside Apple specific development) is ported to Windows. My work is in .NET and various Javascript frameworks. Never had a problem with Windows.

Plus I feel if I really needed a Linux environment, the Linux subsystem would fill that need.

ducttape12··on Adware Is Malicious, and It Uses Advanced Techniques to Infect
Remember back when everyone's computers were infected with this crap because everyone installed p2p crap like Kazaa?

Do non-tech savvy people still have a reason to install software? Don't most people just need a web browser?

ducttape12··on Kiwix – a cross-platform offline Wikipedia reader
I was messing around with an old version of Encarta recently, and it got me to thinking how cool it would be to have a modern encyclopedia run locally again. This lead me to Kiwix... And the 79 GB archive of English Wikipedia.

Kiwix is a great idea for places with limited / no Internet due to infrastructure or oppressive regimes, but living in the United States in a major metropolitan area, Kiwix has little use for me.

ducttape12··on Why I don't play mobile games on my smartphone
I'm an avid gamer on PC and console (both retro and modern), but not mobile. Mobile games aren't games, they're thiny veiled clones of addicting progress bars designed to annoy you into buying in app purchases.
ducttape12··on Run CP/M on your C64 using emulation
I'm not sure where I'd recommend anyone (child or adult) start learning how to program. After BASIC disappeared, I always thought Javascript was a good starting place, but even that ecosystem has gotten crazy complex.
ducttape12··on Can I charge all these employers for wasting my time?
This is most likely fake.
ducttape12··on South Korean government to switch to Linux: ministry
I remember hearing years ago IE usage was crazy high in South Korea because they had laws in place requiring all online banking customers to install an ActiveX control. If that's true... Then they've come pretty far.
ducttape12··on Microbots Are on Their Way
I've played the Metal Gear Solid games enough to know the crazy possibilities of nano machines.
