I have an A1243 at home and a Magic Keyboard 2 at work. The difference in feel doesn't bother me, but the fn in the left corner gets me every time. Caps lock is mapped to control on both, but apparently I use that other control key when switching browser tabs.

Etcher is extra bad on Macos. Populating the file chooser dialog took minutes. I have no idea how it could be this wrong.

I punted on part 2 of #20 as well, but came back to it the next day with a reasonable idea. Some of the tedious parts are easier to do by hand, like picking the corner of the map to start with on #20, or solving the uniqueness on #21.

This is nearly exactly the same presentation he does with Hanselman, which makes it seem likes he's only got a small amount of content. This and the parent video are really just a tech demo. More interesting would be an actual class recording.

Yes, but it's fragile. Zoom has disabled whatever permission is needed for a virtual camera in the past, and I think Skype requires modifying the binary to enable it. The OBS virtual camera seems to work well now, but that's a recent change and I'm not sure I trust it to keep working on new versions of macos.

Just out of curiosity, is there an allowed way to access directories like this? Sudo doesn't let me see the contents of the ~/Library/Safari directory. Can non-Apple programs access this, like backup programs? Can I bless a script to access this? Can Mozilla or others import bookmarks from Safari any more?

For what it's worth, the NDIHX software works well on iPhone and Mac through OBS, and is at least available on Windows.

I'd like Macs to have an official loopback device so video effects wouldn't have to be implemented in every program separately. For example an overlay that worked in Facetime/Zoom/Teams/etc.

Chevy is doing something along these lines, so maybe not too worried.

Resizing and moving the Zoom window of videos is one of the most frustrating parts of online meetings.

I hadn't seen a Youtube ad in years, but now Youtube gives "An error occurred. Please try again later." on first load in Safari on a Mac with Wipr. Reloading without blockers gives ads before and every few minutes and some overlays. Miserable.

It's still easy to work around, but maybe Google's getting more aggressive about blockers.

With the Neo2 you can plug in a USB printer as well and it just works. The Neo2 has been the best cheap Christmas present my youngest kid ever got.

On a Mac, I like Skim.app or Preview. Skim is less aggressive about saving changes right away. I crop the pages, then read a two-page spread in full screen. You can also split the view if you want to refer to a non-adjacent page, though unfortunately only horizontal splits seem to work. Everything's legible enough on a non-retina 21" imac.

Follow-up: 33.4 was because I'm an idiot. I have a surge suppressor with coax in/out between the wall and my modem (lost a cable modem, router and networked laser printer to lightning a few years ago). Removing it puts me at 103/23.0/4.53. I'm sure I checked after adding the surge suppressor, but not, apparently, in quite a long time.

Getting away from one's home life has to have value for a lot of kids, either escaping a bad situation or getting free of an overbearing parent. I think the nytimes had an earlier article about the inequalities that are suddenly on display when students are on camera in their homes.

I thought the rule was that ligatures shouldn't cross syllable boundaries. Like the fi in "fine" can be replaced but not the fi in "barfing", so it would need to be a bit more than a lookup table. Or maybe a dictionary-sized lookup table isn't a problem anymore.

It seems slightly odd, given that there are different traditions of between-sentence spacing, that there doesn't seem to be a Unicode character for the kind of space between sentences.

Schools, particularly those without large endowments, often have large debts they have to service and rely on tuition for much of that. Building facilities is not cheap, and state governments have been providing less funding.

I still have a 6s with a headphone jack. I don't use headphones much, but do plug it into our cars (admittedly not as much of an issue lately). One has no bluetooth, one has incompatible bluetooth. Neither have USB input. Both are likely to last at least ten more years. One adapter per car is not going to be the end of the world, but it is an annoyance.

Does everyone just use their browser full screen now? I never want super-wide text, but I can always narrow my browser window or switch to portrait mode if I'm using a phone or tablet.

I just checked hn, and it lets text get too wide to comfortably read, but stops somewhere before full screen width.

I've found that plug-in to work even where sites try to prevent speed control and skipping, for example our various campus mandatory online training courses.

This is also very satisfying:
