dublinben··on Madrid bans hired e-scooters over safety concerns
>ban all rental e-scooters from October because of the risk they pose to pedestrians

>injury-inducing street litter

Do cars next, I dare you.

dublinben··on Using the moiré effect to show different arrows to each observer (2018)
This is nothing but blogspam of the embedded Tom Scott video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d99_h30swtM. This article adds nothing that is not already included in the video itself.
dublinben··on Fred: Software Development Job Postings on Indeed in the United States
Here is total employment for "Computer Systems Design and Related Services" going back all the way to 1987. This is the best category I can find that includes data over a decade+ time frame.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/IPUMN54151W200000000

This category is defined by the BLS as "establishments primarily engaged in providing expertise in the field of information technologies through one or more of the following activities: (1) writing, modifying, testing, and supporting software to meet the needs of a particular customer; (2) planning and designing computer systems that integrate computer hardware, software, and communication technologies; (3) on-site management and operation of clients' computer systems and/or data processing facilities; and (4) other professional and technical computer related advice and services."

dublinben··on 48% of NYC riders do not pay the bus fare
>Transit should be free, like sidewalks and parks.

And most similarly, roads. The theoretical 'farebox recovery ratio' of most roads is 0, but this is never part of the conversation. Maybe if it were, transit would look much better in comparison.

dublinben··on If we want a shift to walking, we need to prioritize dignity
Another way of saying this is that because physical space in the city is a scarce resource, the allocation of infrastructure for cars and infrastructure for people is a zero sum game.
dublinben··on What Visa earnings tell us about the state of the payments industry
Buy Now Pay Later is growing very quickly and taking market share from credit cards, especially for younger consumers. The introduction of FedNow is going to make it even more convenient to use these apps to make purchases and avoid the credit card infrastructure entirely.

dublinben··on How to use the Bitwarden forwarded email alias generator
Why would using Apple's Hide My Email functionality make non-Apple platforms unusable for logins? If you're storing these credentials in a cross-platform password manager like Bitwarden, you should be able to enter your (fake) email address and password anywhere to sign in.
dublinben··on Z-Library admins "escape house arrest" after judge approves U.S. extradition
Digital products are also worse than physical ones, because the content cartels have used DRM to trample on your first-sale rights like resale and lending. It's no coincidence that digital books are often more expensive than paper books, because the publishers have killed the second hand market.
dublinben··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
cURL is ubiquitous. It's unclear whether there is even a proprietary alternative still being sold commercially.
dublinben··on The American West is figuring out how to keep cool
There's a lot of talk about painting pavement white, but no mention of ripping it out and replacing cars with other forms of transportation. Internal combustion engine vehicles themselves turn 100% of the energy from gasoline into heat, localized to the roads they are driving on. This pumps billions of BTUs of heat directly into a city on a daily basis.[0] We could start cooling these cities down by not unnecessarily heating them up in the first place.

dublinben··on Rents are rising faster than wages across the country
High interest rates also push up demand by keeping more people stuck as renters who would rather buy a home.
dublinben··on GhostStripe attack haunts self-driving cars by making them ignore road signs
So they’ve finally reached parity with human drivers then.
dublinben··on Show HN: I made a privacy friendly and simple app to track my menstruation
For anyone on iOS, there is a cycle tracker built into the Apple Health app, so no third party app needed.

dublinben··on When do we stop finding new music?
>good luck introducing anyone in the 25+ category to new albums that actually experiment into novel sounds and become the music of the current 20yo generation

Both here and in the article there's a conflation of "new music" with "contemporary mainstream popular" which seems invalid. Is the Billboard Hot 100 any more or less innovative in 2024 than it was in 2004, or 1974? I think that most "mainstream" music is precisely "a slight riff on stuff [written] a long time ago." You have to go outside of the mainstream to find music and artists that are experimenting with novel sounds, just like you did in decades past.

As you say, there's been an explosion of independent creativity, thanks to the Internet. There's no reason for anyone who is interested in music to listen to the same old mainstream dreck.

dublinben··on Cindy Lee might be the future of music
No kidding. This admission feels like a professional food critic whining that McDonalds isn’t available on DoorDash. This music isn’t my cup of tea, but this guy sounds like a real poser.
dublinben··on Tesla reportedly drops plan to build $25,000 EV
They've already been beaten to the punch by BYD and their multiple cars under $20k. They even have a small hatchback for less than $10k!

dublinben··on Land use policies make urban childcare expensive and rare
Cities aren’t loud, cars are loud. Noise pollution is a real problem, but most people aren’t willing to do anything about it.

dublinben··on Land use policies make urban childcare expensive and rare
This wasn't a problem when students rode school busses instead of being individually chauffeured.

Alternatively, Paris solved this problem by closing the nearby streets to cars, so the students can safely walk to school.

dublinben··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
Why not both?
dublinben··on A Return to Blu-ray as Streaming Value Evaporates
Libby / Overdrive for ebooks are a racket. The publishers sell ‘disposable’ licenses that expire after something like only 20 uses or a few years, whichever comes first. Support your local library, but don’t support greedy publishers.

dublinben··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
Cities are populated by people, not cars. As point A and point B become closer, people are less likely to drive.

If your mailbox is attached to your house, you can lean out your front door to get your mail. If your mailbox is at the end of your 20 foot driveway, you take a few steps to get your mail. If you live on a farm, and your mailbox is down a several hundred yard driveway, you might hop in your side-by-side UTV. If your mail goes to a Post Office Box in town, you might hop in your truck and pick it up while running errands.

dublinben··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
You can't assume that the number of cars is a constant though. As point A and point B become farther apart, car usage goes up. When they become closer together, car usage scales down.
dublinben··on Apple TV+ Cornered the Market on "Prestige Dad TV"
Severance is much better than either of those.
dublinben··on Paris cycling numbers double in one year thanks to investment
Even as a driver, if you think about the second-order effects of getting more (other) people out of their cars, it becomes obvious that it would improve traffic for you. An enlightened self-interested driver would want to increase investment in alternatives to driving, since that is the only proven solution for congestion.

dublinben··on The largest climatized reading space
This is an artificial hill covered in artificial trees illuminated by artificial lights, sealed in glass so they can maintain an artificially habitable atmosphere.

In other countries, you can just read outside on a real hill, under real trees, in the light of the real sun, breathing in non-polluted air.
