dubeye··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
It all reminds me of when Amazon website used to get laughed at but those who overweighted their design preferences. The first ai poster in the list look fine to me
dubeye··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The top ones which are all the same are better than any that which follow. To my eye.

Guess it’s subjective. I’m looking for fair info. He is looking for design uniqueness.

dubeye··on Korea raises data breach fines to 10% of revenue
Sounds good in theory, what's the practical reality in your experience?
dubeye··on Apple Watch Series 12
its' something older people want. that's where the demographics are going. people with faded hearing and memories
dubeye··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
It has strong sales so must assume the gameplay loop is enjoyable by a lot of players, but I don't think I'll ever understand
dubeye··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
everything ages and matures and goes through stages of experimentation and conservation. it would be much weirder if it didn't happen.

if you want a young thing, go find a young thing

dubeye··on Mechanical Turk shutting down September 30
I suppose it depends on the value of the individual task. I can't imagine it's really realistic to lock down devices of mechanical Turk workers in such a way that ai use can be monitored.

In any case Locking down devices isn't really pragmatic at scale for relatively low value tasks, and also introduces complexity about employment law where I am.

dubeye··on Mechanical Turk shutting down September 30
I've used Mechanical Turk in the early days but developed my own version for my vertical to manage freelancers.

The problem as I see it is verifying the work is not done by AI. If it was possible to verify somehow that the work is definitely not done by AI I think there would still be a market for this. But the data just cannot be trusted.

An increasingly big part of my job is to try and weed out workers who use AI and it's not an easy task at scale because generally workers gain trust with manual work and then there is degradation over time.

dubeye··on The AI Demand Bubble
revenue is probably the better indicator of whether revenue is growing or not
dubeye··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
not every profession has excess, not sure I can get on board with the idea that candy crush is of equal value to any job. money is just a measure of goods and services.
dubeye··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
I think you missed my point. But you think the bounds of every field of research and technology has expanded, except language?

To learn how to read and write well, then you would do just as well, if not better, to read modern authors at the top of their fields. I wouldn't exclude thrillers. Reading Chaucer in old English, to stretch the point to breaking, is not going to give you any kind of edge. Maybe it will teach you a bit of French, but again, you are better off reading modern French literature for that.

I suspect you were not forced to read the classics as I was. Much of it is stuffed with overly flowery prose and immature ideas. It's mostly tradition that keeps them alive.

There is much personal satisfaction in literature, but I would place it much closer to leisure than work.

dubeye··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
Interesting that you highlight classics, is the implication that it's more ... productive for your personal development to read classics than trashy thrillers?

As someone who spent four years reading 'the' Classics at uni, I doubt it's very true

you comment wouldn't read quite so well if you swapped classics for posting cat tiktoks and hanging out with strangers you bump into in the street. But what makes that inferior?

dubeye··on Apple's new SpeechAnalyzer API, benchmarked against Whisper and its predecessor
Cloud is so cheap and quick. I use local too but my api bill is like 3 quid a month. You would have to be very cheap or have compliance needs to tolerate the error gap
dubeye··on Cannabis users face substantially higher risk of heart attack (2025)
i researched and experimented with edibles after beign diagnosed with CVD.

i don't beleive edibles are any safer

dubeye··on Cannabis users face substantially higher risk of heart attack (2025)
Yeah this was a big one for me, weed has lots of little knock on impact into other CV risk factors
dubeye··on Cannabis users face substantially higher risk of heart attack (2025)
this is true of most risk factors though, diet, excercise, relationships, work , all suffer under stress. it's the job of medical reseach to sift this stuff as best they can.
dubeye··on SpaceX to buy Cursor AI coding agent operator Anysphere for $60B
shocked that an engineer would not mention user numbers or revenue growth in their analysis
dubeye··on Where is the AI jobs crisis?
My anecdote is there was a single wave of cuts and a bit of a shuffle, but for most part it's business as normal now
dubeye··on The solution might be cancelling my AI subscription
It doesn’t sound like the author has a real business?

This is a common problem with devs - they don’t understand how code fits into a business model, and generally massively underestimate non technical elements such as focus and sales

dubeye··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
I was a heavy quest user but I think it ruined my eyes a bit and I needed glasses after having 20 20. Could be standard aging but the correlation was very strong
dubeye··on The real cost of owning a home
The real point of home ownership is control, you have complete ownership and responsibility which comes with pros and cons.

I used to love renting but now value the control above all else. I suspect having kids is the largest factor in the shift

dubeye··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
The code is less buggy , on average. You're overestimating the average developer.
dubeye··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
the reality is my business continues to operate at higher efficiency, even with the bugs.

i don't think it's 'our side' that has the psychosis.

dubeye··on Google plans to invest up to $40B in Anthropic
Google seems to own a bit of everyone.
dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
My use is not relevant. It's not ideal to extrapolate from your own personal habits. cursor's user volume and growth is the important thing
dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
It's an interesting idea that society should somehow prevent companies valuation being linked to how many people use their product.

Unsure how it would work in practice.

dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
It's fine to care about different stuff, but if you want to understand the valuation of a company, then your experience only goes so far. it's not going to make any sense unless you broaden your scope of interest to the metrics that impact valuation.
dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
It's not 'the' most important question.
dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B

you've formed an opinion on the value of the company without knowing how many users it has? Kind of proves my point, no?
dubeye··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
Because of user count? Same was said about instagram. with all due respect, devs don't seem to understand business
