dtx1··on Flying kites deliver container-sized power generation
As someone who regularly flies hobby kites, I think it can be done.

Modern kites are made of nylon and kevlar. With regular maintenance these kites should last at least a decade. Cables might have to be replaced every few years.

As for the flying algorithm, I doubt it has to be very sophisticated at all, especially if the kite is itself designed to self right and stabilise. After all, a single line kite has 0 controls.

dtx1··on MNT Reform: a hackable laptop, not for everyone
This is pretty much a shitty version of the framework laptop. Yeah, it might be a little bit more open source but these arm chips are finicky, buggy and plainly too slow for any reasonable work.

If you want to replace parts, buy a framework. At least you get an actually usable device instead of spending all these resources on an expensive toy that you'll be bored and frustrated with after a few days.

dtx1··on Ask HN: Washed out PHP Dev – What to do next?
I would strongly suggest looking into something other than programming for a little while. Tech Support/Admin work will be easy to do with your tech background. This will stretch the time you have to get certified in AWS and learn a language in depth.
dtx1··on Deep cloning objects in JavaScript
That is really useful, thank you! I think first stage is building the game and see if the whole Genetic Algorithm/Monte Carlo Setup actually works, even if the first few iterations take weeks.

The issue is I want to figure out if there are combos that I don't even know exist that are unusually strong. Basically make sure I balance the card pool but automatically.

dtx1··on Deep cloning objects in JavaScript
I haven't really gotten to the point where anything works but doing the serialize de/serialize combo is possible. The issue is, that I am thinking about doing this not a few hundred times but more like several million times (preferably per minute), so i'll likely have to implement several competing versions and benchmark them.

The full idea is implement a deckbuilding game like magic and use genetic algorithms and montecarlo simulation to balance the card pool. But that requires millions of games with millions of simulations to work. So i'll see if it's even possible.

dtx1··on Deep cloning objects in JavaScript
I am building a card game engine in typescript. A simple AI based on monte carlo tree search requires me to copy the gamestate a lot. And it's always a list of cards that i'm modeling so I really need to deepclone arrays.

dtx1··on FOSDEM 2024 Schedule
Two Times in a row i got home from fosdem absolutely sick. It's always cold, rainy, the campus is an order of magnitude to small for the amount of people in attendance and the lecture rooms windows aren't opened long enough to deal with all the People Smells that accumulate. If you go there, were a Mask at all times and desinfect your hands frequently or you will end up sick.

Oh, and drinks are cheapest from the vending machines because they are from the university, not from the commercial vendors.

dtx1··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
Fascinating, i think you are correct. This website at least suggests that there are some other laws regarding domestic bribes: https://www.globalcompliancenews.com/anti-corruption/anti-co...

But "Domestic Bribery Act" seems to be a hallucination. I have so far only encountered fake sources or links that don't exist, this kind of hallucination is new and unexpected.

Thanks for making me aware of this, quite scary how utterly convincing chatGPT was in this instance.

dtx1··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
Looking at your profile, it says you work for Google, so I assume this is in the context of google? You guys probably have the internal legal resources to advice you. If it was not in that context, ChatGPT at least suggest that this is first of all a federal fucking crime (Domestic Bribery Act seems to apply here) and you can contact the Department of Justice, the FBI or report it to the SEC which offers a whistleblower program.

Please consider your next steps carefully though and contact legal counsel basically immediately since you just publicly accused adobe representatives of a federal crime! Frankly, I would ask Dan to remove your comment ASAP.

Fun Fact: The SEC offers financial incentives to people who report those violations!

dtx1··on AMD's New Threadripper Chips Have a Hidden Fuse That Blows When Overclocking
> the cpu will downclock, but not throttle around 100 Celsius.

Downclocking is literally throttling. But there's like another 10% performance that can be unlocked if you'd go full custom watercooling.

dtx1··on AMD's New Threadripper Chips Have a Hidden Fuse That Blows When Overclocking
Overclocking these modern CPUs is usually just removing the powerlimit. They can clock themselves pretty close to the thermal limit anyway and little is gained in raw performance above that. But the Performance/Watt drops significantly when overclocking.

Unless of course you are selling cars with a Full Self Driving Package for $12k that promises

"Your car will be able to drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention and will continuously improve All functionality of Basic Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot Autosteer on city streets Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control"

In which case it's not a BS promise but fraud.

dtx1··on To revive Portland, officials seek to ban public drug use
The sad reality is that current forms of law enforcement aren't working when it comes to hard drugs and addiction. Putting people in prison for getting addicted to crack is not exactly going to make anyones lifes better. But it has also become quite obvious that you can't have free-range junkies shooting up in what is supposed to be the economic center of a city.

I suspect in a few decades forced rehab will become the norm, once you start smoking crack or shooting up in the street. It's pretty obvious for anyone with eyes that at a certain point, homelessness, mental health issues and most importantly drug addiction cannot be covered by "individual freedom" anymore if you want to have a working society.

Of course, having police beat up and arrest or otherwise forcefully move addicts from one place to another or into the prison industrial complex is not likely to work.

dtx1··on Arch Linux bugtracker migration to Gitlab completed
Proton, Gamescope, Linux ESync/FSync Patches are all at least related to valves efforts from what I can gather and as an Arch User I feel it's the premier linux gaming distro due to valves efforts.

I think most of the work Valve does is upstream from Arch though but it's trickling down very fast (with arch, sometimes hours, if it's an AUR-Git package, seconds).

dtx1··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
Yeah, I feel you, especially reading the "I would buy a fairphone if..." Thread here. I really appreciate what you are doing.

Google is planning 7 years of Security Support for their Pixel 8...which really doesn't help much when the battery is glued in...

dtx1··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
Hey, thanks for answering!

So in regards to security let me first refer to this thread: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/7208-8y-security-updates-on...

And it might sound unfair to compare the fairphone to a pixel device or a pixel device with grapheneos but the practical reality is that if this is going to be my one phone, than it will be the hub for all my private conversations, my bank forces me to use an app based authentication so basically my entire finances are on that device, e-mails, including those with doctors, etc.

It has to be secure and it has to up to date. And I am aware that my Pixel 3a currently isn't but I'm literally between buying the fairphone or the pixel 8. And I really don't want glued in batteries.

Now, let's see what the current state is for the fairphone 4: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/440585822094...

Release date: 3rd Nov 2023 Security Patch Level: 5th October 2023

According to the Android Security Bulletin there are two more bulletins out right now: https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/2023-11-01

In November and December each there is at least one Critical System CVE, with google noting:

> Note: There are indications that the following may be under limited, targeted exploitation. > CVE-2023-33063 > CVE-2023-33107 > CVE-2023-33106

So...Those aren't patched right now on the fairphone 4, are they? Now I'm not arguing most other companies are doing better, but that doesn't make it a good situation.

> And you would even prefer Lineage OS? Isn't that still more or less mandating userdebug builds and entirely open?

As far as lineage is concerned, i'll be waiting for an official release to even be there before evaluating the security but I am aware of the userdebug issue.

Though let me say that "abhorrent" is propably not the best adjective to describe it here. Unsatisfying would be fairer. As for the rest of the software... I just have to look at the forums dude...

dtx1··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
I'm really considering Fairphone 5 as an Upgrade to my Pixel 3a with Graphene OS. Hardware seems fine (5g, Wifi 6e, reasonable SoC, MicroSD, etc.) but the absolute terrible state of Fairphone Software and their abhorrent record on dealing with security issues is really putting me off. So I'm waiting for Lineage OS to officially support it, hoping that they get this done better.

> If it is true that the cell-level fuses must be calibrated to account for the fact that the cells are reused, would it not also be true that fuses must be recalibrated after some time even if the cells remain in their original application?

If you are being conservative, the fuse is already well below any peak ouput a cell might give you so aging cells are considered. Also in large packs, cells should (in theory) age roughly equally. But If you match a LG HG2 and a Sony Conyon and both fuse them for 50A and then wait a few years of usage your gonna have a bad day
