dtwwtd··on Dalvik ported to MeeGo, promising instant Android app compatibility
I realize how easy it is, I just wanted to point out that they still won't have market access.

I'm of the opinion that Nokia should just move to Android - they make nice hardware but they need better software and should stop spinning their wheels and partner with Google on Android. Don't get me wrong, I love my n810, but I'd like to see Android on a lot of hardware Nokia makes.

dtwwtd··on Dalvik ported to MeeGo, promising instant Android app compatibility
This doesn't mean that Google will give MeeGo access to the Android market, meaning that it will increase the work for developers to support the multiple platforms.
dtwwtd··on Rovio explains why Angry Birds update needs SMS permission
I find it interesting that Rovio is choosing to build its own payment system rather than use the options that Google is integrating into the Android platform.

I don't have a problem with granting these permissions to an app that I use that comes from a well known, trusted developer. Also, the features that require the permissions aren't used unless you actually make the decision to use them. So while the developers really should make sure they educate their users before taking their money, in the end it falls on the users to make the decision to buy.

dtwwtd··on Is it possible/practical to program android in a language other than Java?
Depending on what you want to do there are some options.

The one that's been around longest but the most limited is the ASE (Android Scripting Environment) http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2009/06/introducing-an...

Using the ASE you can create some simple programs to do small tasks.

If you're looking to build a full app you're probably going to be looking at either working through Java, or if you're on Gingerbread you can use C++. Previous versions of Android allowed for C++ libraries being linked to your apps but had no way to access the APIs for creating graphical interfaces. That's now changed so I recommend you look into the SDK and NDK if you're really serious about building on Android. http://developer.android.com/sdk/ http://developer.android.com/sdk/ndk/

The only other option that I know about is that the Mono framework is being ported to android (.NET framework port). So if you know C# or any other .NET language you may be able to start there, although I think it's currently in closed beta. http://monodroid.net/

dtwwtd··on Twitter Beta-Tests a Spine
If not for principles, then perhaps for their public image?

That would be my guess. Whatever the reason, I do hope that more companies consider following Twitter and defending their users in the future.

dtwwtd··on Make it free or fail
Fair enough, they do seem to hide any free offerings. They seem to fit well into the "building a fantastic product, charging for it, and offering great support" group.
dtwwtd··on Ask HN: I want to go paper-free. How?
An alternative would be a traditional flatbed scanner.

While not ideal for catching up on a backlog of unscanned documents, it isn't bad for scanning current documents. They can be bought for anywhere between $30-70.

As another thing to consider for non sensitive documents (things like course notes or the like) would be do find a copy machine on campus that can scan multiple pages in a row. The ones at my school have the option to email pdfs to you rather than print. It might be a good (free) way to scan many documents at once if you can find one.

dtwwtd··on Make it free or fail
I feel that the author has a point, but only to a certain extent. There are also plenty of companies that focus on a great user experience and top not support. To provide some counter examples to the companies listed in the article, companies like 37signals or GitHub and many blossoming mobile game developers are executing on this very well, in my opinion.
dtwwtd··on Poll: How old were you when you started programming?
I got started when I was 11 or 12 with something called Blitz Basic. It was a language developed for the purpose of quick, easy game development. Game development was what got me hooked, with my first real program being a 'guess the number' game.
dtwwtd··on Google Chrome Blog: Browse for a good cause
On the terms page [1] for the extension, Google says it's a daily limit.

http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/p/cause/tos/

dtwwtd··on Google Chrome Blog: Browse for a good cause
Is it somehow conflicting with other extensions? I haven't had any issues at all since installing it.
dtwwtd··on Google Chrome Blog: Browse for a good cause
This is something simple that everyone can do to help others out. It takes no effort, so I hope anyone that uses Chrome will install this.
dtwwtd··on Ask HN: Cheap VPS Providers?
Yes, they provide a few choices of Linux distro and then you get full access to everything.
dtwwtd··on How do you hire a lawyer or an accountant?
I'd definitely be interested, something along the lines of a 20-30 minute show that answers two or three questions in a good amount of detail would be very useful to me.
dtwwtd··on Ask HN: Cheap VPS Providers?
I'm on Rizie and couldn't be happier, VPS service starts at $4/month.

dtwwtd··on Chromium Blog: A New Crankshaft for V8
It will also be interesting to see if this improves performance of long running Node.js scripts.
dtwwtd··on Introducing Apache Wave
I'm pleased that Wave will be in such able hands. It really shows that Google does care about open source when they take this much trouble to follow through on their promises.
dtwwtd··on Introducing Apache Wave
It's built into the current web interface.

Click the box with three dots at the top right of a wave and then choose export.

dtwwtd··on Grooveshark's new Javascript/HTML interface
I would assume that this is the reason.

This is one of the major limitations of the HTML5 + Javascript stack, and one that will have to be solved before we see even more widespread use on services like Hulu or Netflix.

dtwwtd··on Launching CakePlate, a boilerplate CakePHP distribution for fast web apps
You may also want to look at CI's 2.0 development branch.

They've rebuilt much of the base code on top of PHP 5 natively now instead of being built on PHP 4 with hacks to make it also work with 5.

Although it is still in development, it has been said that it is stable.

dtwwtd··on The Only OS X Shortcut You Need to Remember
Give Alfred a try and have the both of best worlds, I couldn't live without it now.

dtwwtd··on The New MobileMe Login Page Has Some Badass JS
I'd assume it's because Safari's JS interpreter (Nitro) is a different interpreter than Chrome's V8
dtwwtd··on Where Are the Android Killer Apps?
Tasker has been built such that it allows similar plugins and also claims compatibility with Locale plugins.

I've tried Tasker and PhoneWeaver but not Locale as of yet. I couldn't live without this functionality anymore.

dtwwtd··on Ask HN: How do you get started by yourself?
What's often left out is the other side of the picture.

Yes, Bill Gates dropped out, but what about the unknown others who dropped out and are not successful?

I agree with kolinko up above, education is important, but you can also use that time to work on your own projects. Whether those projects go anywhere or not, you'll still have the experience from workong on them.

dtwwtd··on Is it hard to become an Android developer?
I recently did this for a 24 hour competition and even something as simple as this helped me learn a lot. (I had no prior Java or Android experience)
dtwwtd··on Ask HN: Want to optimize reading of Twitter - need your help!
I'd like to see the ability to set priority on certain users' updates rising to the top.

dtwwtd··on Ask HN: How do I give my son a head start?
I agree with this completely. This is one skill I don't have that I definitely wish more emphasis was put on when I was younger.
dtwwtd··on FROM useless compsci undergrad TO web app developer: how do I get started?
Cool, feel free to let me know if you need help or get stuck. I'd be glad to help you out.
dtwwtd··on FROM useless compsci undergrad TO web app developer: how do I get started?
From one student to another:

The best advice I can give you is to just build something.

Pick some small annoyance you have and give yourself a strict timeframe and then build. You'll learn best by coding not reading.

Just pick a language, anyone the ones you mentioned are great. Don't worry about which is easiest or has the best guides. Just start and when you get stuck do a Google search for your problem then move on.

Some small ideas to get you started in case you have none: A personal todo list or a comment system for a website

I hope that helps and good luck!

dtwwtd··on Ask HN: Do CS students enjoy C anymore?
At the University of Michigan, our classes are taught in C++ although the early courses teach C data structures before allowing us to use things like classes or the STL.

There are a handful of classes taught using other languages (Java, Python) but for the most part we're all C/C++
