dturnbull··on Ask HN: Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
I wrote a book about the Meteor JavaScript framework, which is available for free, but I also sell a video training series that's based on the book: http://meteortips.com
dturnbull··on Meteor 1.1 Released – Now Supporting Microsoft Windows and MongoDB 3.0
For the sake of shameless self-promotion, I'd also like to suggest my book for anyone who feels Discover Meteor moves a bit too fast: http://meteortips.com/book/ (It's free.)

:)

dturnbull··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now and why is it cool?
A sequel to my book about the Meteor JavaScript framework.

This was the first: http://meteortips.com

But since that one just hit its 2nd edition, I'm keen to talk about topics I'm yet to cover. Lots of work ahead though.

:)

dturnbull··on Your First Meteor Application, 2nd Edition (available online for free)
Will get to more advanced stuff one of these days. Next step is to write about mobile development with Meteor.

:)

dturnbull··on How to quickly localize your app for 300 dollars
Don't overestimate automated translation. My girlfriend is a native Japanese speaker (and professional translator) and she laughs when she sees the results of Google Translate. Especially for a language like Japanese, nothing's going to beat a human being who takes pride in their work.
dturnbull··on Meteor hits 1.0
Also, as a shameless plug, beginning web developers are quite fond of my book about Meteor:

http://meteortips.com/book

It'll be a couple of days before a (completely) revised version is released for 1.0 though.

dturnbull··on Show HN: A video training course for the Meteor JavaScript framework
Previously, I shared the free, online book I wrote about Meteor — http://meteortips.com/book/ — and this course is based on that book. Same scope, but it's much easier to demonstrate certain ideas through video.

Further video previews of the course are available on Udemy: http://udemy.com/meteorjs

(Obviously though, I'm not a designer — nor do I have experience in writing sales copy — so the page itself needs a lot of work.)

dturnbull··on Ask HN: What are you building?
Software-wise, just got a few scrappy demos I've thrown together. One creates an RSS feed for YouTube channels so you can subscribe to them as video podcasts. Problem is, it relies on hot-linking Google's servers and I'm sure it breaks all sorts of conditions in their Terms of Service. Still, want to finish it so I can at least use it myself.

Outside of that, I'm working on a screencast series for the Meteor JavaScript framework:

http://meteortips.com/screencasts

Launches in a few days. Then I'll start working on the next update to my (free) book about Meteor:

http://meteortips.com/book

:)

dturnbull··on Show HN: I just finished my book about Meteor. You can read it online for free
No problemo. Been a lot of fun. :)

There's a lot I plan to revise about it over the coming months, but the scope feels about right. :)
dturnbull··on Offer HN: We'll translate your iOS application to Japanese for free
In that regards, it's mostly a matter of simplicity. It's easier for us to work with the devices we have (and love) and to market based on a specific target.
dturnbull··on Offer HN: We'll translate your iOS application to Japanese for free
My partner already does "specialise" in translation. She does freelancing for a living. I simply had the theory that it'd be more effective to niche down, and I chose to target iOS because: I'm a user of iOS, I have some iOS development experience, and the App Store is growing in Japan. We're not basing our livelihoods on the decision. It's just something we're testing.
dturnbull··on Offer HN: We'll translate your iOS application to Japanese for free
Sorry for not being clearer. I edited the original post, so use that email. :)
dturnbull··on Offer HN: We'll translate your iOS application to Japanese for free
Because we feel like we can offer better service by specialising, since we can test the apps ourselves, etc. We want to give every app a considerable amount of attention so the final result isn't just a translation that "makes sense," but that will be truly appreciated by users in Japan.

Note: We were having trouble with the original email in this post so I've switched it over to my personal email. If anyone's sent a message already, please resend. Thanks. :)
dturnbull··on Show HN: A book about the Meteor.js framework – available online for free
You can get the EPUB version by signing up for the Meteor Tips newsletter (free) or simply buying the book on Leanpub. :)

Thanks for the kind words, man, Much appreciated.

As for your suggestion, I'll have to check out that Udacity course like you suggested. My worry is that the book could become too heavy on the theory within the first few pages — I mostly want to get the reader's fingers on the keyboard as soon as humanly possible — but can see where you're coming from and will do what I can in the next few versions of the book. :)

Usually refer to it as just "Meteor" but, in the form of a headline, "Meteor.js" feels a tad more descriptive. Even if someone has never heard of Meteor, they can see that it at least has something to do with JavaScript.
dturnbull··on Show HN: A book about the Meteor.js framework – available online for free
OP is the author of the book. I've been gearing up to release the next set of chapters and figured it might be worth sharing. :)
dturnbull··on Show HN: A book about the Meteor.js framework – available online for free
Absolutely. The sheer simplicity of Meteor is taking me back to the days of hacking together simple web pages with HTML, CSS, and a sprinkling of JavaScript, only now it's possible to build much more feature-rich creations. :)

dturnbull··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I started a blog about the Meteor JavaScript framework: http://meteortips.com I've been working on the web for a long while now (about a decade) but it's been a while since I've thrown myself this deep into the web development side of things. :)
dturnbull··on Show HN: I'm writing an ebook about adventure and giving it away for free
Registered. Just came back from an eight-month backpacking trip. Looking for something a little more unique though. :)
