dt2m··on About communication safety in Messages
You raise a great point here. I’m born and raised in Europe, still live here now, but I’ve spent a great deal of time in the US, and the differences in how we perceive children might be the biggest gap between the two cultures.

I much prefer the European view of children being raised as young adults, seeing the world for what it is, rather than the American idea of creating a puritan parallel society scrubbed of all the “bad” things.

Looking back on this I’ve found that the European model raises better critical thinkers – partly due to the school system as well – and you end up with a more sustainable parent-child relationship when the children are grown.

In a world where US culture basically shapes the design of the tech products and social media we all use, this scares me.

dt2m··on Why Medium Failed
I’m convinced Medium failed the second they considered themselves more than a blogging platform. Initially it was a very well designed blog as-a-service but they kept shovelling on features and wanted to be a destination in its own right.

If they removed the free tier and doubled down on providing a best-in-class white label blogging platform, they might not be in as bad a position as they are today.

Greed’s a motherfucker…

dt2m··on Why does Apple hate the scrollbar?
It looks a lot cleaner without. I prefer it the way it is
dt2m··on The video game prescribed by doctors to treat ADHD
Right, I might have been misconstruing the usage of the word. I’m just very sad of the quite common belief amongst neurotypical people that ADHD can be “cured” or treated with these “one simple trick” type of solutions.

Especially as the article in question only considers treatment of focus issues, when ADHD in actuality presents itself as a broad spectrum of difficulties that reach far deeper than simple focus issues in school.

dt2m··on The video game prescribed by doctors to treat ADHD
Never said I don’t consider them treatments, I absolutely do and feel like they’re the most effective solution. Only talking about non-drug solutions as the article specifically mentions it as an alternative to medicine.

Having said that, it is foolish to believe you can take drugs which are analogous to speed and believe there won’t be any side effects. Whether or not these side effects are worth it will be up to the individual.

dt2m··on The video game prescribed by doctors to treat ADHD
“Treat” is the wrong operative word here. There is no cure or treatment for ADHD, but there are definitely non-pharmaceutical strategies, which combined with education and therapy, can help mitigate symptoms.

I’m sure the app works great to help educate children with focus issues in school, but it’s very unlikely it will do anything to help with the remaining executive dysfunction problems which will become very apparent once they reach adulthood.

dt2m··on Logitech MX Products are incompatible with AirPods
I’ve found that if I use it on an extension lead on a USB 2.0 port (i.e. via another hub) it works fine thru a TB dock
dt2m··on Quick Tip: Enable Touch ID for Sudo (2020)
Killer, thx !
dt2m··on Quick Tip: Enable Touch ID for Sudo (2020)
For whatever reason, this resulted in me being prompted to first type my password, then also authenticate with Touch ID.
dt2m··on Ultrawide monitors are overrated, here's why I use a 4K TV instead
No joke. I have very good eyesight and bought a 4K 32" display to run at @1x. When I started using the display, I had no issue with the pixel pitch, but the extra cognitive load of being able to see so much at once was such a downside that I've went back to my 27" 1440p display and I'm much happier.
dt2m··on Ask HN: What are some mentally healthy apps to have?
I just use Apple Books and download epubs or buy Books from their store. I’m not too picky to be honest, I just need the words on the screen and I’m good to go
dt2m··on Ask HN: What are some mentally healthy apps to have?
> Put some ebooks on your phone and read those.

This was the biggest improvement I did to improve my "phone time".

I realized I was only kidding myself if the actual goal was zero screen time. Being unproductive and just killing time by yourself isn't a bad thing, but if you spend that time reading something substantial instead of news and Twitter beefs you don't hate yourself afterwards.

dt2m··on Apple’s Safari browser now has more than 1B users
At the time the argument was pretty sound as it relates to all apps using web views, not just browsers. Imagine how much worse the iOS experience would be if most developers used an off-the-shelf shoddy HTML rendering engine because it supported a single edge case feature they needed in their app.
dt2m··on Show HN: Top Links from Hacker News, Reddit, Techmeme, PH on a Single Page
It really started sucking after the redesign, IMO. But who can blame them? What happened is the only outcome possible if your business model is Web 2.0.
dt2m··on Show HN: IndigoStack – a new native macOS app for local web development
The little mini rack design is so cute!!! This type of playfulness is what I loved about the Mac experience 15 years ago.
dt2m··on Firefox's protection against fingerprinting
The irony of this is that you'll end up with a fingerprint that is probably more unique than just running standard Chrome at 1920x1080.
dt2m··on Ask HN: 6-hour workdays more important than 4-day workweeks IMO
Exactly - context switching will make you less productive trying to fit in three different "modes" every day all week.
dt2m··on Boox Mira Pro full REVIEW – a 25.3“ e-ink monitor
What an incredible response time. I had no idea e-ink had advanced this much.

As for use-cases however, I fail to see why I would want this instead of a regular monitor as a second display. But incredibly cool tech!

dt2m··on MIT researchers develop a paper thin loudspeaker
True, but if the frequency response already drops off that heavily at 1kHz you're going to need some very serious amplification to use it for anything other than speech, even after applying DSP - which I'm guessing defeats the whole purpose of the speaker in the first place.
dt2m··on MIT researchers develop a paper thin loudspeaker
> When 25 volts of electricity were passed through the device at 1 kilohertz (a rate of 1,000 cycles per second), the speaker produced high-quality sound at conversational levels of 66 decibels. At 10 kilohertz, the sound pressure level increased to 86 decibels

Read: Tinny af.

Nonetheless, VERY exciting technology. Will be interesting to watch as it matures.

dt2m··on How macOS manages M1 CPU cores
For what it’s worth, I’ve had the same experience on x86 with Logic being stable as a rock, it just seems to be a M1 thing. Without a doubt this can be sorted out down the road, but Apple’s insistence on only using AU in Logic means that every plugin in Logic is going to take a performance hit as nearly all devs write a VST version and wrap that in an AU.

More complexity = more room for errors especially on a new cpu architecture.

dt2m··on How macOS manages M1 CPU cores
Anecdotally, Logic has consistently been the worst DAW in my testing, performance-wise, when it comes to hosting plugins. Maybe it's due to the AU format, but the de facto result is the same.

I run Ableton, FL, Pro Tools and Logic (mainly working in Ableton) and my goal is to record at 48k with a buffer length of 32 samples, with very light use of plugins. In my testing with the exact same plugins, Logic would consistently have buffer overflows every minute or so.

Ableton ran far more stable (especially in Rosetta), but PT was the only DAW to do it without hiccups. My initial guess is that the AAX plugin format is more tightly coupled to its internal processing, improving performance. But I was quite shocked to find out that Logic (Apple's own software) performed the worst.

Plugin development in general is a shitshow where most devs seemingly only do enough to get them barely working, so I'm not surprised most of them misbehave on ARM. It's a bit sad that we're two years into the Apple Silicon transition and performance still is so rocky.

dt2m··on How macOS manages M1 CPU cores
> Counterintuitively, it seems that under very light load, things work well, and under very heavy load, things work well, but for medium loads, there is failure. Also counterintuitively, the newer M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs, with more performance cores (6-8) and fewer efficiency cores (2), seem to have a larger "medium load" range where things don't work well.

Source (https://1014.org/?article=854)

This explains Justin Frankel's observations in the article above. It's a bit annoying there seems to be no way to force a process to only run on the P cores with no throttling. Having mostly bought a M1 Mac for music production, I keep running into this exact issue. Light workloads invoke more processing glitches than running loads of tracks and plugins at the same time.

Hopefully developers will eventually get more granular control of this for high-performance apps, battery life be damned.

dt2m··on Subreddit with almost 2M subs tries to migrate to custom platform
yeah, and the audacity of using a MLK quote to justify shitposting on a news aggregator isn't helping for me.

a funny consequence of this is that the more reddit/twitter bans content that doesn't align with their advertisers' interests, the more incentive there is to fragmentize the internet yet again. them creating a new website is exactly what every community should be doing - it makes the internet more diverse, even if the content is literal dogshit.

dt2m··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify
Collectors, DJs, artists and music enthusiasts all still have a great need for actual files. For the average user it might seem dumb, but to me, my Spotify/Apple Music/YouTube Music libraries all seem frail and there are multiple instances of songs being remastered and replaced, as well as artists changing the final versions after initial release (Kanye West comes to mind for one).
dt2m··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify
Deezer is still the best bet.
dt2m··on Ask HN: Beating depression with or without anti-depressants?
And also - it's a cliche fucking answer, but make sure you get outside and see some sunlight every day. If you have the time to do it, walk or bike to your destinations instead of taking the car or public transport.

Walking for about an hour a day in the daytime will likely bring you similar mental benefits as strenuous exercise does. And on the plus-side you're not cooped up in a gym like a hamster in a wheel.

dt2m··on Ask HN: Beating depression with or without anti-depressants?
When you start learning how to ride a bike, training wheels help.

Once you're comfortable- take the training wheels off.

dt2m··on A new speed milestone for Chrome
Not OP but I have exclusively used Safari since the first version and recently switched to Firefox, and the password manager not being able to use iCloud Keychain is really a major bummer.

For such a long time Firefox didn't take being a native Mac OS citizen seriously, with scrolling not being natively implemented, form fields feeling "off" and in general just feeling like a Windows app in a Cocoa window.

Luckily those days are long gone now, and Firefox now feels much more like a native app, save for a couple of dialog boxes here and there. But having used iCloud Keychain for such a long time, and there being no option to import my 500+ passwords, it really has been a pain in the ass to switch browsers.

At this point the best solution might almost be legislation banning touch screens from cars and home appliances...
