dstola··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
The Capitol was the focal point of the protest due to the location and in this case the perceived injustice of the election. When almost half the voting population thinks there is something wrong with the election, maybe its time to listen to those people. If anything I think the hivemind and unemployed young people showing frustration was the spark that ignited what happened yesterday.

I am not trying to justify it as good or bad, but it was not a coup by a long shot and you cant haphazardly label it as such.

dstola··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
I don't think there is any reason to exaggerate. People have a will and a right to protest against their perceived injustice at a state or federal level. A coup also usually involves the military and a taking of government by force, neither of which happened yesterday. If this were a coup then the BLM "protests" over the summer were also a coup, and they were causing significantly more damage to small business with destruction and looting.

You are being disingenuous if you label this as a "coup" regurgitating biased media talking points.

dstola··on Reflections on the Lack of Adoption of Domain Specific Languages [pdf]
IMO a big reason why there is a decline in DSLs could be attributed to de-priotization of teaching compilers in Universities. There are certainly grad level courses, but (my university as an example) did not have an undergrad level compiler course, not even introduction to.

I think if you rekindle interests in compiler for people, you will simultaneously increase the likelihood of DSLs being used to solve problems.

dstola··on How much math you need for programming (2014)
From Wikipedia [1]

"Mathematical induction proves that we can climb as high as we like on a ladder, by proving that we can climb onto the bottom rung (the basis) and that from each rung we can climb up to the next one (the step)."

For-loops are a discrete form of mathematical induction and is a basic concept to do any kind of programming, hence the joke (of course its more nuanced than that but is true in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way)

dstola··on How much math you need for programming (2014)
There is a joke/saying/anecdote I heard a long time ago that may or may not be relevant

"Programmers are mathematicians that solve all their problems by Induction"

After being a software engineer for over half a decade now, that still rings strangely true to me

dstola··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Avatar the Movie (from director of Titanic, not the anime). I remember how hyped it was before the release and I felt it definitely delivered (second one is slated for 2022 release)
dstola··on EA to buy Dirt Rally-maker Codemasters for £1B
I think EA is depreacating Origin in favour of Steam, or at least not making Origin the centre of their universe. That's why you can buy FIFA21 on Steam and games like Dragon Age and their EA Origin Pass subscription.
dstola··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
It will only stop at 1984 levels when the only opinions you can have are the government mandated ones

You think that would never fly, but I bet people thought censorship on the internet on this scale would never work 20 years ago

dstola··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
Regardless of where you stand, this is _blatant_ political bias (democrats) towards an equally valid opposing viewpoint (republican)

This is literally definition of a slippery slope where Google is going and would have caused an absolute outrage had it happened with the whole Russian election meddling 4 years ago. Let the freedom of expression take course, trying to control the narrative is exact opposite of democracy that Google screams they are trying to protect.

dstola··on These Modern Programming Languages Will Make You Suffer
IMO a highly opinionated piece with the author showing strong confirmation bias for functional languages and hating on OO/imperative paradigms (despite them being the majority of all software written outside academia)

As the author says himself, languages are tools, it's up to you to choose the right one for the job

dstola··on The Grenfell Tower inquiry is uncovering a major corporate scandal
> We have a crazy system where people purchase “long-leases” for their flats, you don’t own the flat, your just renting it for a long period of time

Who owns the flats then? A lease of 99 years with rent I would assume easily covers the outright cost of the flat. Seems crazy to me that this system continues to function.

dstola··on Increase in delirium, rare brain inflammation and stroke linked to Covid-19
> a detailed account of neurological symptoms of 43 people

The sample size is extremely small, and there is already selection bias because of pre-screening for neurological symptoms

> who had either confirmed or suspected Covid-19

really, they couldn't test the 43 people for covid that they were doing a study on?

dstola··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
People that speak out in favour of virtue and signalling thereof get praise and admiration, other people that speak their opinion, which may be unconventional, get fired from their jobs or lose scholarships to universities. How did it come to this? Seems like this situation is a grotesque twisting of freedom of expression, something that the internet was supposed to endorse, not condemn.
dstola··on What is emergence?
Maybe I am speaking outside my comfort zone a little, but isn't this the same as trying to find physical axioms that build up a whole and it has been disproven by Godel with respect to Whiteheads and Russels Principia Mathematica and completely blows reductionists out of the water if we go as far as equating math == physics in all but name

dstola··on Europe says 737 Max won't fly until it completes it own design review
I dont think people will all of a sudden start ditching cheap flights just to avoid the max or Boeing. Airline industry is extremely price sensitive from a consumer perspective, and for people to potentially sacrifice hundreds of dollars of savings would be a non sequitur.

For example, if airline A flies MAX and has a ticket for 200 and another airline B has the same route for 400 on A320, most people I know would still fly the MAX because they cant afford to be picky.

I think talking with your wallet works only when the price is relatively inelastic

dstola··on Boeing Was ‘Go, Go, Go’ to Beat Airbus with the 737 Max

dstola··on 4chan has been blocked in NZ “for security reasons”
> they were radicalized and incited by 4chan and/or 8chan

If you can prove that statement then it certainly deserves to get shutdown, but you cant

if you read something in the newspaper and it makes you angry and/or sparks an extreme reaction, should that newspaper be banned? or a TV network, or any other news source?

Its a slippery slope if you go down this road IMO

dstola··on A Story About Piracy
I think that is more of a fault with "modern" apps than it is with web developing in general, ie, dependency hell with arcane libraries doing god knows what for god knows what reason. If you simplify, then anyone and their grandma can write a basic html page with some tutorials and google-fu.
dstola··on Facebook, Instagram go down around the world in an apparent outage
The only things that I can think of that would cause this scale of being down is either a T1 center outage or (conspiracy hat on) a major hack and everyone is rush patching

Would be interesting to read the post mortem if there is any regardless

dstola··on PEP 584 – Add + and – operators to the built-in dict class
In case the values match you could supply a collision callback to define what to do, eg to add the values,

  d1 = {'a': 1}
  d2 = {'a': 2}

  d3 = {**d1, **d2, add_func)

  def add_func(a, b):
      return a+b
Or something along those lines
