dsq··on Biden warns of rising democracy-threatening 'oligarchy' in grim farewell speech
Is this the same in all the US? Or more so in specific states or metros?
dsq··on Ask HN: Best side hustle for WFH guys
How do you know? Did you try both? I have heard varying opinions on this.
dsq··on Ask HN: Do you prefer tailing or leading comma?
For me leading commas make stuff easier to debug, you don't have to worry about the commas when you comment out the line on the select statement.
dsq··on Ask HN: Nineteen Year Old Seeking Career Advice
Space. In whatever shape or form space industry/ travel/ communication/ whatever is the current rapidly growing market.

dsq··on Should you freeze your brain? These scientists think it's worth a shot
I recommend Larry Niven's "World out of Time" in which the (cryogenically preserved) protagonist's memories are implanted in a new body by a future government. Great book.
dsq··on California's gas prices to increase 65 cents per gallon with new fuel standards
My peoblem with taxes such as fuel tax is that they create a perverse incentive for the state to perpetuate the use of gasoline.

The state gets hooked on the tax money.

dsq··on NASA remains silent on why crew went to hospital after dragon splashdown
Lose weight while floating sedately...sounds good to me
dsq··on Apple put the Magic Mouse's charging port on the bottom, again
Obviously no higher ups at Apple ever need to charge their own mouse.
dsq··on Family offices are increasingly interested in defence tech
I read the article and still couldn't understand what exactly was meant by 'defence'. Financial, defending assets? Alarm systems in the building? Deadly lasers controlled by a Red Queen computer?
dsq··on Amazon buys stake in nuclear energy developer in push to power data centres
Absolutely. However, an often made detraction of nuclear is that the baseload is superfluous during off hours, so hydrogen generation is worth mentioning.
dsq··on Amazon buys stake in nuclear energy developer in push to power data centres
An added value is that in off-hours nuclear can be used to produce hydrogen for carbon free fuel.
dsq··on Emirates' Clark raises 'looming' specter of Boeing bankruptcy protection
This same complacency and smugness in Boeing's board is endemic in America's elites. Reality eventually bites, and the longer it takes the deeper the fangs will go.
dsq··on Google orders small modular nuclear reactors for its data centres
If SpaceX finally succeeds in driving down costs of moving matter to space, we can find a faroff place and store the really hazardous waste there.
dsq··on Google orders small modular nuclear reactors for its data centres
"Truth will out". In the end, it will become more and more clear that the best solution for low emission, highly available, robust energy production is nuclear power in its varied forms. Best for the environment, best for civilization.
dsq··on Android could soon have a native Linux terminal app
The problem is not for lack of terminal apps, there are some very good ones. What is lacking is excellent keyboard support for the full range of keys. The only one I have as yet seen is Hacker's Keyboard which is sadly not supported in the later Android releases.
dsq··on King vs. Kubrick: The Origins of Evil (2020)
I only discovered King a few years ago, having purposely avoided his books as something that "everyone liked". Now I am a fan. However, I am less fond of the film adaptations. I think that it is very challenging to make King's books into movies. The Shining is one of the more successful adaptations and ironically that which King most despises.
dsq··on New research says "blue zones" can be explained by flawed data
I also don't think there was, its more of a scifi kind of musing.
dsq··on Google won't be mandating a strict return-to-office plan
Aren't SFHs occupied more by high income tax brackets? That would balance out the property tax.
dsq··on New research says "blue zones" can be explained by flawed data
I wonder if there was anything historically equivalent to the Antediluvian lifespans described in the Old Testament. If, for example, there was something in the food a few thousand years ago in the area of the Persian/Arabian Gulf, now underwater, that could extend lifespan.
dsq··on The economic case for mass immigration is COLLAPSING
I don't quite see the reason for allcaps in the title. Otherwise, an interesting article.
dsq··on Forever chemicals persist through waste incineration, researcher finds
Would a more extreme form of waste disposal, plasma gasification, have the same limitations?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_gasification

dsq··on Most Amazon workers considering job hunting due to 5-day in-office policy
Maybe that's the point? Getting people to quit instead of having to do layoffs.
dsq··on Edible insects show promise as sustainable nutritional source
I'll only believe its nutritionallly OK once I see the political and economic elites eating it on a regular basis. Till then I regard insect food as soylent green.
dsq··on Why do I hear ribbit noises whenever my dad is working on databases?
Toad is a tool for managing databases in Oracle. It makes a ribbit sound when starting up.
dsq··on Reading texts on paper versus computer screen: Effects on reading comprehension [pdf] (2012)
I can read something on screen ten times and not have it make any impression. Paper is much better for me personally.
dsq··on Omnipresent AI cameras will ensure good behavior, says Larry Ellison
Sources?
dsq··on Omnipresent AI cameras will ensure good behavior, says Larry Ellison
'You can turn it off!' he said.

'Yes,' said O'Brien, 'we can turn it off. We have that privilege.'

dsq··on The data on extreme human ageing is rotten from the inside out
Sounds like the Howard Families

dsq··on French Pirate Site Blocking Order Targets Expired and Seized Z-Library Domains
I also couldn't understand the title of this post. Only after reading your comment wss the meaning revealed to me.
dsq··on Grandma trapped in elevator for six days survived by rationing groceries
Hah! The article reads "Published 16 January 2024" in large font right under the title. Then below it says 1988. I guess my eyes skipped over that part.

This makes it even more strange, as in 1988 there were no investors buying empty apartments, and probably more young families needing accommodation.
