dsmmcken··on Show HN: I built an autopilot for the lunar lander game
choosing how late you can turn it on and still land is almost a game in itself.
dsmmcken··on Show HN: Can I Compost It? – Find Out What Goes in Your Compost Bin
pick on result from the list the first time you type it, pick another the second time. Repeat.
dsmmcken··on Show HN: Can I Compost It? – Find Out What Goes in Your Compost Bin
Typing slow, "sa" pick and option. Type "sa" fast and pick an option. Do that back and forth and you get the wrong result. I am guessing you are missing a key or something for your list.
dsmmcken··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2023)
CV link doesn't work for me.
dsmmcken··on Show HN: Plus – Self-updating screenshots
Nice. I've been thinking about going the more complicated route of building a screenshot pipeline for our docusaurus based docs. I am currently considering building something that would allow you to embed a ```playwright code block into your markdown, containing a playwright test with the expected output, and then at build time it would execute the tests and replace the code blocks with the images.

Anyone do something similar?

dsmmcken··on Balloon framing is worse-is-better (2021)
That's SIP, not Zip. Zip is like regular sheeting, but can have an inner layer of foam to thermally break the structure.
dsmmcken··on Consider Using CSV
You could also consider Kafka for streaming, and Parquet for batch.
dsmmcken··on Why I only use plain black wallpapers
I also do a solid colour with low saturation for clearer window borders. It is also good if you send a lot of screenshots to colleagues and don't want any extra visual noise in them if you hastily capture too wide.

dsmmcken··on Could you be a web designer?
Um, actually question twelve is wrong. Those use two different typefaces. The iOS keyboard is SF Pro, but hardware keyboards are SF Compact. SF Compact is less round, you should be able to see the difference if you compare the O and D in the screenshot.

I noticed that, but still only got 9/12.

dsmmcken··on Apple Rankings
I know the site is partly in jest, but I cross-checked against my local bareroot orchard that sells ~75 varieties of Apples and this site had only about 5% of them. I would say it's missing quite a few of the best apples.
dsmmcken··on Any tools can generate datatype from string?
pandas is good if you are in python.

If you happen to be looking for something in java, you can try: https://github.com/deephaven/deephaven-csv

Benchmarks, along with other java alternatives discussed here: https://deephaven.io/blog/2022/02/23/csv-reader/

dsmmcken··on Product vs. Engineering
"Product Designer" is becoming a more common role at big companies these days, and tends to have a similar role to a traditional PMs. Usually from a designer background.
dsmmcken··on The “dark yellow problem” in design system color palettes
The relative luminance will still make the yellow "feel" brighter than the others. In the article, the initial stated goal was to have the colours carry a similar relative level of emphasis.
dsmmcken··on Show HN: Satori – Convert HTML and CSS to SVG
That's pretty cool. I've hand rolled an og-image generator with Automattic/node-canvas for a static site (Docusaurus) at build time. Edge is cool, but doing it at build time probably makes more sense for static sites.

Looks like using Satori might have been easier to use then having to do all the canvas draw calls (which isn't all that bad either though).

Edit: Nevermind. Actually looks like this wouldn't be self hostable in a github action. vercel/og doesn't run in a node runtime?

dsmmcken··on Apache Pegasus - A horizontally scalable, high-performance key-value store
Looks dead. English docs haven't been touched for 2 years.

dsmmcken··on Show HN: Ezno, a type checker for JavaScript and optimiser for React
The repo still looks pretty active, which seems contrary to your statement.
dsmmcken··on Interactive Docs with Markdoc
I haven't experienced the supposed concern of complexity with MDX. I have a docs site with 1600+ md pages. In practice I've exposed a small number of react components that doc writers can use and that's it. Sure in theory they could introduce new complexity, but they don't. Further, you can introduce new markdown primitives with remark that get transformed to react components if you want to hide some of that complexity from writers. For example, we have one that auto collapses adjacent fenced code blocks of different language into one react component with a built in language switcher.
dsmmcken··on Algolia Acquires Search.io
Does this improve or impact docsearch?
dsmmcken··on Penpot: Open-source design and prototyping platform
That's unfortunate. I have one large file that contains everything for a particular project. I migrated from Sketch to Figma a couple years ago and did so using their import. It was not perfect, but was better than nothing. It took a few days to clean it up again, but was a good starting point for migration. As the file has years of work in it, starting over would be a significant amount of work.
dsmmcken··on Penpot: Open-source design and prototyping platform
Looks like you can self host with a docker container. That's very cool.

Can I import from figma?

dsmmcken··on Show HN: I made 7k images with DALL-E 2 to create a reference/inspiration table
I tried quite a few of them in stable diffusion, and while I found the results typically look worse, it was still interesting. How much curation of the output did you do or was it that exact prompt and the first result?

I would love to see it re-run with stable diffusion, and have those added along side/or ability to toggle.

dsmmcken··on DALL·E: Introducing Outpainting
The UX is evolving around AI image generation so fast, everyday is something new. There's so much greenfield exploration space for new interaction models.

6 months from now, how we interact with these models will probably look entirely different.

dsmmcken··on Show HN: Simple UI for Stable Diffusion. Browser-based, runs on localhost
Worked great, this was definitely the easiest way I have come across to run stable diffusion locally. Just tried it out with wsl2 on windows 11 using a 2080 super (8gb). I hope you continue to make improvements to the UI.
dsmmcken··on Show HN: Glue – Pandas as a DAG (Now a web app)
What is the expected inputs and outputs? How do you see this fitting into a users workflow?
dsmmcken··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
> messes up the height for packing the keyboard away

You design things for how they are used. If it is a keyboard meant to live out it's life on desk, then why design for how it is packed away? Perhaps if it was advertised as a portable travel keyboard then designing for storage would make sense.

dsmmcken··on The Trouble with the Segway (2009)
I think it had more to do with price then anything. Adjusted for inflation, it cost $7800 when launched. A motorcycle cost less. The technology of the time would have made it hard to get it much cheaper.

Contrast with today, electric scooters are cheap and ubiquitous. They can be purchased for less than $300 and deliver on the same promise.

dsmmcken··on Redis explained
Font for the handwriting is Skippy Sharp, incase anyone else was wondering.
dsmmcken··on Redis explained
Yes, I would suggest increasing z-index on images so they pass above the toc. Adding a large dropshadow to the images the same color as the background would make it look like it fades out as it passes by. That's what I did for our blog that has a similar floating TOC + images that escape the text width.
dsmmcken··on Redis explained
Beautifully presented, worth reading just for the illustrations.
