dsmithn··on Nexus: The best of Google, now in three sizes
That's the phone, not the Nexus 10 tablet which is $399.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: Can Facebook lead to a Minority Report like computer system?
I think Google might be in the better position. Not only can they see what people search for, they have access to more emails than anyone else. Anyone who gets an email from facebook that includes the text of a facebook post or message could be read by Google.
dsmithn··on The largest known prime in word form
> Or if you must, all of the digits in text form (328.06 Megabytes): http://prime.isthe.com/no.index/chongo/merdigit/long-m431126...
dsmithn··on Skrollr - parallax scrolling for the masses
Here's another well done one: http://www.nintendo.com.au/gamesites/mariokartwii/#snes
dsmithn··on Introducing Syte, An open sourced personal site that has social integrations
From the post, "Syte’s design is pretty simple and was inspired by the Svbtle Network."
dsmithn··on SpaceX test firing the Falcon 9
According to their twitter, yes. "SUCCESS - 2 second burn!"

dsmithn··on Ask HN: Semi-Technical Job Positions?
I think being able to code things like Excel macros would be beneficial in a lot of typical office positions.

Also, a lot of uni's offer MIS and similar degrees. They are a business degree with a few technical classes designed to output technical managers. Business Intelligence and Information Security are the two tracks my university offered. Does yours have something similar?

dsmithn··on Google’s Not-So-Profitable Android Venture
I'm curious how much revenue Android phones have taken away from Apple. Considering how much more Apple makes per phone, if even half the Android phones out there were iPhones, that's a massive potential loss for Apple.
dsmithn··on David Kadavy's "Design for Hackers" now on Amazon
Interesting - there are already 3 used books for sale. All slightly more expensive than the one from Amazon.
dsmithn··on Design for Hackers (the book) is here
I'm not the author, I just submitted the blog post.
dsmithn··on Design for Hackers (the book) is here
I couldn't tell you for sure but considering the sections on color theory and layouts, it would seem to be a lot harder to digest the book using a grey-scale screen that reformats the pages. (if that's what the Kindle does, I don't actually have one)
dsmithn··on David Kadavy's "Design for Hackers" now on Amazon
From the description: "The term 'hacker' has been redefined to consist of anyone who has an insatiable curiosity as to how things work—and how they can try to make them better. This book is aimed at hackers of all skill levels..."

It's pretty clear what he means by "Hacker" and why he used it.

dsmithn··on Jig, the first product from Tasty Labs
Maybe that's the the "Member of" thing is for. Easy to see all the posts by people from HN, for example.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: Who can down-vote comments and/or submissions?
From the FAQ:

Why don't I see down arrows?

There are no down arrows on submissions. They only appear on comments after users reach a certain karma threshold.
I believe it's around 500 points.
dsmithn··on Why you don't steal from a hacker.
In fact, he's updated his post to reflect this kind of comment:

"Updated: to quell the comments, I did not choose the title to imply downloading tracking software is hacking, I am a hacker by profession and have been all my life."

dsmithn··on Xkcd Password Generator
If this kind of thing takes off, it will become easier for dictionary based password attacks. Using this advice would go a long way towards preventing this.
dsmithn··on Google Please Hire Me
I'd say more often than not that's the case I see. Is it ethical, though?
dsmithn··on How to remove yourself from all background check websites
I was curious, too. From the OP, "I asked LawyerCT about this one and she said that any serious employer would use a real site such as social intelligence to run a background check. The sites listed above are mostly around to make a profit off of selling your information. There are sites like Social Intelligence which are only available for use by organizations/corporations." Seems like a pretty safe move.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: Good Podcasts?
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php?page=hharchive

If you have a lot of time, Ghosts of the Ostfront series is fantastic.

dsmithn··on Ask HN: Why are there so many Python freelancers looking for work?
Well the question is that the supply seems to be preceding demand. Tons of python freelancers seeking work on the thread - no one is seeking python freelancers.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: How to get better at reading source code?
I recently had to take over a few thousand lines of code, spread over 5-10 files. Really, what works for me is following the code from start to finish, and a very high level. Basically, mapping the order every function is called and getting a quick idea of what that function does. Many times the function name alone is enough. From there, you know where to look when you want to understand some specific functionality in depth.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: Is email the best option for enterprise?
IM works great
dsmithn··on House Committee Approves Bill Mandating That Companies Spy on Their Users
This is about ISP's correct? The title made me think my employer would be forced to spy on me. (not that they already don't)

Either way I hope this isn't something that will happen silently, I want to know as soon as my internet history will be stored for an entire year by my ISP.

dsmithn··on Ask HN: Comp Sci Student with very little real world experience seeking advice
Everyone has mentioned programming, but that's the not only kind of experience that helps.

If you aren't familiar with Linux, start getting comfortable with it. I got my first internship with my only real qualification being that I knew my way around a shell. My tasks were mainly just running scripts on a regular basis, but it lead to getting experience in a lot of other areas.

dsmithn··on Ask HN: Am I at a disadvantage for not attending Stanford, MIT, etc?
If you want to go that route, I would recommend picking an assignment you are very interested in, and going all out on it. Even if you get A's on your assignments, they're still probably not that impressive until you can put a few months of extra work into them. Also, if you discuss it with your professor, you have the added potential of building a good relationship with him/her.

Looking back, I really wish I had done something like this because I was in the same boat as you - a lot of motivation to build something, but not knowing what to build.

dsmithn··on Rogue Academic Downloader Busted by MIT Webcam Stakeout, Arrest Report Says
Yes, but crimes that have the potential to benefit people without hurting anyone else?
dsmithn··on NYT Skimmer
Well, that might explain why people replaced ancient scrolls with books?
dsmithn··on DropBox CDN
DropBox (and other file sharing sites) are blocked at my work, so I hope if this takes off, people use some sort of proxy.
dsmithn··on Hacker News vs TechCrunch (my site is now on the front page of both)
Makes sense to me, as I'm always in hurry to get back to the comments on HN.
