dsawler··on What The Heck Is Responsive Web Design?
For those interested in some neat examples, http://mediaqueri.es
dsawler··on Ask HN: Designers, and other non technical staff
Having them learn something new is great, go with Git.
dsawler··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (November 2011)
I love stuff like this. Email sent!
dsawler··on Ask HN: Online Supermarkets?
http://www.relayfoods.com/ is pretty neat, but only locations in VA right now.
dsawler··on Show HN: Codecademy.com, the easiest way to learn to code
Eloquent Javascript was painful for me. As a beginner, I had so much trouble understanding what was going on.

On the other hand, I've had a great experience with Codecademy, though I haven't spent a bunch of time with it yet.

dsawler··on Anyone want some Spotify Invitations?
Thanks, I used one!
dsawler··on Rate our startup: Tribesports - a social network for sportspeople
Interesting. You should also post this on reddit.com/r/fitness.
dsawler··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (June 2011)
Can you talk a little bit more about the designer role? I don't see the job posted on your site.
dsawler··on Show HN: my weekend project Html5Snippets.com
Much nicer and easier to use compared to other sites that do this. Bookmarked.
dsawler··on Ask HN: Best resources for learning javascript?
This is exactly what someone else keeps telling me. Time for me to listen, I guess. Thanks!
dsawler··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (May 2011)
I might be missing something, but I don't see any design position open, mainly engineering.

What's the purpose of 3 words or less?

It loads funny in Chrome 10 and FF4, http://cl.ly/0s3i0K3t2D3K2C3x0A2Q

Also, when I click in the search input field in FF4, it takes me to a 404 page.

dsawler··on Ask HN: Archive of well-designed PSDs?
There are a few, including 365psd, DesignMoo,and PremiumPixel. I've found myself glancing at them a couple times, but when it came to putting that design into web design, it became a useless service for me (now I rarely make a PSD).

dsawler··on Ask HN: Which design tool (open source) do you use for webpage design?
I second it getting buggy, particularly for search/replace.
dsawler··on Ask HN: When do you exercise?
If you cannot wake up before work to work out, you cannot motivate yourself to work out after work, you cannot find time to set aside time during the day to work out -- then your goals aren't important to you. Let me explain. If you genuinely like what you're doing, your routine, then you'll do it.

For example, I absolutely love my new gymnastics routine. I want to do it on my rest days because I find it so much fun. I even love setting up my schedule. However, I dread the days when I have to do Plyo X from P90X or a workout form the Insanity set. So, what happens? I slack off, I don't do them, I make excuses.

In short, find a goal and a routine to reach that goal, and you'll have the motivation and make the time.

dsawler··on Ask HN: Where can I improve my graphic design skills?
So, I think reading about design is a great way for you to learn the basics and principles (I highly recommend The Non Designers Design Book).

Once you read that, then I would suggest to start reading some well known web magazines, maybe like Smashing or VecTuts/PSDTuts to go through some tutorials and help you understand just how people use noise on a button, or a drop shadow on a button, etc. Then again, I think these things are sometimes over the top and used because it's trendy. But, you can make your own decisions.

A lot of people just use Photoshop patterns made by someone else for those background images (http://patterns.ava7.com/tag-beige.php,http://designm.ag/res...). Find a pattern, fill > pattern, tada!

dsawler··on Ask HN: Where can I improve my graphic design skills?
Is your problem not knowing what it is you want to create (or, what an "updated" version of that design would be), or do you not have the skill set to develop what it is you want to create? Or both?
dsawler··on Ask HN: Where can I improve my graphic design skills?
I think the more someone looks at Dribbble, the more their work shows they've been viewing Dribbble too often. Sure, there are trends, and then there is good design, and the line is blurry in most. But, a lot of stuff on Dribbble is the same texture, pattern, noise, over and over. In short, I think looking outside of the web for inspiration can help designers not rehash the same design techniques over and over.
