drx··on Extend your runway, cheap money is over
Typically, even as a pre-seed or seed company, you can rely on being able to raise your next round if you hit certain milestones in your key metrics.

For example, if you are a SaaS company, you have a good story and team, and your TAM makes sense, you could have previously hit $300k-$1M ARR and raised a Series A. Some startups were even raising A's pre-revenue. In the new environment, that ability will likely dry up.

You're right, it's a little over the top. It was in response to some feedback I got on my draft which was "OK, I read the article, but what's the relation to Canvas?". I added a divider and a disclaimer.

I try to write helpful content first, and only then plug the company, so this is good feedback, thanks.

drx··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2022)
Canvas | Software Engineer | San Francisco | Full-time | 0.7% - 1%

Canvas (https://canvasapp.com/) is what would happen if Figma and spreadsheets had a baby.

Data teams painstakingly set up warehouses. Only for business teams to hit “export to CSV”.

This happens at every startup at scale, every day.

Come solve this with us.

We’re backed by Sequoia, SV Angel, founders of Fivetran, Segment, Datadog, Webflow, Lattice, Flexport, Instacart, Front, Okta, DoorDash, Loom, Shogun, Postmates, and more.

We have a cozy office in downtown SF, we’re cool with hybrid.

Awesome!
drx··on Launch HN: Carve (YC S19) – Rent Cars from Local Dealerships
This is great! I use Zipcar/Turo/Avis quite a bit since I don’t own a car. Some notes:

* I would pay extra for unlimited mileage without worrying about overages. This is a major pain point for longer Zipcar trips to Tahoe or Oregon/Nevada

* The deductible is really high. Zipcar lets me pay extra for a $0 deductible.

* Mileage and deductible should be more visible, I had to go and read the actual terms. A small summary before booking might be good

* Mileage overage of $0.50/mile is pretty high considering I’m paying for gas

* UX nit, the calendar widget on the landing page requires me to scroll through a bunch of early morning AM times before getting to my time. The dropoff picker should default to the month of pickup as well.

I’m a big fan of your focus on minimizing hassle. The uber credit is clever! I’ll definitely try you guys for my next trip.

drx··on Physicists Detect Gravitational Waves, Proving Einstein Right
This would be true in a static universe, but, during the 1.2 billion years the waves have been traveling, the universe was experiencing accelerating expansion.

For example, the edge of the observable universe is about 46.5 lightyears away, while the universe is thought to be 13.8 billion years.

drx··on Physicists Detect Gravitational Waves, Proving Einstein Right
From the paper: "To account for the search background noise varying across the target signal space, candidate and background events are divided into three search classes based on template length. The right panel of Fig. 4 shows the background for the search class of GW150914. The GW150914 detection- statistic value of ρˆ_c = 23.6 is larger than any background event, so only an upper bound can be placed on its false alarm rate. Across the three search classes this bound is 1 in 203 000 years. This translates to a false alarm probability < 2 × 10^−7, corresponding to 5.1σ. A second, independent matched-filter analysis that uses a different method for estimating the significance of its events [85,86], also detected GW150914 with identical signal parameters and consistent significance" (https://dcc.ligo.org/LIGO-P150914/public). Take a look at Figure 4 as well.

In case you'd like to dig deeper, the 85 and 86 mentioned are:

[85] K. Cannon et al., Astrophys. J. 748, 136 (2012).

[86] S. Privitera, S. R. P. Mohapatra, P. Ajith, K. Cannon, N. Fotopoulos, M. A. Frei, C. Hanna, A. J. Weinstein, and J. T. Whelan, Phys. Rev. D 89, 024003 (2014),

TFA says "they had heard and recorded the sound of two black holes colliding a billion light-years away" and "1.2 billion years ago".

And from the paper: "The source lies at a luminosity distance of 410+160-180 Mpcc corresponding to a redshift z=0.09+0.03-0.04.". (https://dcc.ligo.org/LIGO-P150914/public) Which corresponds to 1.337+0.522-0.587 billion ly (or between 750.2 million and 1.859 billion ly).

drx··on Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free
Lawsuits.

I imagine the revenue distribution would follow a power law here. So it would only really make sense for Epic to go after non-compliant "whales", where the unpaid royalties exceed the legal costs.

Also, the more profitable the project, the lower the non-compliance rate, probably. It makes little sense to defy the royalty agreement if you have a successful project.

drx··on Welcome to Unreal Engine 4
This is huge. Unreal Engine 3 was used in a lot of AAA games, including the Arkham games, Borderlands etc. And this is the new version. Basically, the state of the art 3d game engine for 5% gross royalties.

Also, this gives you access to the engine source code, which for Unreal Engine 3 meant paying a fee on the upper scale of six figures (some engines are even more expensive, CryEngine costs over a million bucks).

5% (even considering it's gross) is really really competitive, considering what you're getting in return.
