Another side of the same coin: anything "free" that you wouldn't use if you had to pay for it isn't providing value.
drtz··on Open-source apps removed from Google Play Store due to donation links
I've been a regular Wireguard user for the last year and love it. Google just gave me the motivation to finally make a donation.

Thanks for the great work!

drtz··on How to Solve Enforcement Challenges
I was surprised to see one of these challenges pop up for me on LinkedIn this afternoon.

As annoying as these challenges are, I'm glad to see one asking for something other than picking blurry bicycles and invisible crosswalks. (Yes, I'm talking about you, ReCAPTCHA)

drtz··on Google Fi Unlimited Plan
Purely anecdotal, but my experience with Fi has been far less than ideal and I'm about ready to switch to another network.

Right now I'm about a week into fighting with support, so far unsuccessfully, to get back $40 in charges for device protection on a device that was deactivated months ago. Their response: "it's your duty to remove device protection when deactivating a device."

This is after more than a year of struggling with WiFi tethering issues. I've had a ton of problems with the hotspot dropping WiFi connections and other weird networking problems where the phone suddenly stops routing traffic correctly (I suspect it's something to do with the network swap). In the ~10 times I've contacted them about the issue, support has been absolutely terrible. They usually take about 30 minutes before they even figure out what tethering is, only to suggest I install OS updates or swap out my phone for the nth time.

drtz··on The cost of parsing JSON
Couldn't this same performance boost be achieved by adding an optional "strict mode"-like flag for object literals to v8? Adding JSON.parse(…) everywhere you need an object literal seems exceptionally kludgy, even for JS.
drtz··on Raytheon, United Technologies Merger Will Create A New Aerospace Giant
Exactly: Raytheon is going to have considerably more lobbying power after this merger.
drtz··on The Case for Rooms
> The trouble is everyone congergrates in the kitchen! That's fine if it's nice and wide and has plenty of counter space, but awful if it's really tiny and the only means between the living room and the patio where your other friend is grilling.

This is one of the many reasons why open floor plans aren't going anywhere. Even without the "entertaining" aspect, people still cook for their families.

I grew up in an early 1900s Coastal Victorian house. While my parents cooked dinner after work in our small kitchen, my brother and I would usually hang out under their feet an in the way. Playing in the living room or upstairs meant we didn't see them until dinner time.

I live in a modern "open concept" now. My wife and I cook dinner after work while the kids play in the dining or living room and nobody has to be forced into isolation. The high-flow If anybody wants alone time, there's a small office downstairs and bedrooms upstairs.

drtz··on Getting my personal data out of Facebook
Isn't Ireland is home to these business because they have lower corporate taxes than the rest of the EU? Lower taxes likely make it harder to fund the regulatory agencies that should oversee these companies, which were intentionally courted to Ireland with lower taxes.

I don't disagree with you, but it seems to be largely a problem of Ireland's own making.

drtz··on Rules for Autocomplete
Mac Spotlight Search doesn't follow this rule and it's sooooo annoying. I have Firefox and Firefox Developer Edition both installed and the top search suggestion seems to randomly switch back and forth between the two depending on how many letters of "firefox" I type.

Trying to switch to 1Password is somehow even more irritating. Typing "1p" reasonably suggests 1Password. If I continue typing "1pa", however, I'm given the hilariously unrelated knowledge that 1 Pascal is equal to 0.0075 Torrs. Pressing return then takes me a Google search (in Safari, which isn't even my default browser) for "1pa" which gives me yet another pressure unit conversion, 1 Pa = 1e-5 bar.

drtz··on LA is using ride-hailing startup Via to shuttle people to public transit
I'm in Allen which is outside of the DART service area, though, so I'm probably not covered. Although I'm just across the Plano-Allen border. Maybe I could just walk a couple blocks south and summon a ride. :D

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely check it out.

drtz··on LA is using ride-hailing startup Via to shuttle people to public transit
Dallas has the same problem as LA. I live about 3 miles from a light rail park & ride but I don't even have bus service. I'd love to be able to use a ride share service, but taking Uber or Lyft adds another $10-15 to my daily commute.
drtz··on Google cans the Chromecast Audio
I had planned on building out a home audio system using Chromecast Audios w/ small amplifiers distributed around the house. I even did a test run with my patio speakers and it worked out great. Now I'm going to have to rethink things.
drtz··on Investigating Implausible Bloomberg Supermicro Stories
I gave up when I got to the section on munufacturability. The idea that a package this size isn't big enough to house a large amount of digital logic is just wrong.
drtz··on A Billionaire Pledges to Fight High Drug Prices, and the Industry Is Rattled
No, because it is just an estimate. Every medical estimate in the US will include language that explains services other than those in the estimate may be provided, and you'll be responsible for paying for them. The provider is under no legal obligation to only perform the estimated services.
drtz··on A Billionaire Pledges to Fight High Drug Prices, and the Industry Is Rattled
Somewhat ironically, mechanics seem to be generally considered one of the least trustworthy forms of business. I wonder why the medical profession hasn't seemed to earn a similar reputation. Maybe they will but they just haven't gotten there yet.
drtz··on A graph of programming languages connected through compilers
My main takeaway: people want to avoid writing JavaScript about as much as they want to avoid writing machine code or Java bytecode.
drtz··on Don't Provide Your References to a Recruiter Until After Your Last Interview
I once had a recruiter cold-call my employer's main line, ask for me by name and falsely claim to the receptionist that they had already been in contact with me about a position. The whole office heard about it within 30 minutes.

Not a good way to make friends.

drtz··on Google Workers Urge C.E.O. To Pull Out of Pentagon A.I. Project
> ... there's almost always somebody more unscrupulous, devout, or patriotic than you who knows or is willing to learn what it takes to finish the job ...

If you believe that doing something is wrong, the idea that someone more unscrupulous will do it if you do not must not be used as an excuse for doing that thing yourself. Giving in to this notion will prove yourself to be the one who is unscrupulous.

drtz··on GrubHub Drivers Ruled Contractors
We have a round hole and a triangle hole, and we're telling the courts to decide which one to put the square peg in.

Sooner or later our legislatures are going to have to deal with this issue.

drtz··on Software Complexity Is Killing Us
If you're building something you plan on throwing away, or won't be around to maintain, it makes perfect sense to throw things together quickly. If you're building something that will be a foundation for many future projects, however, it's worthwhile to put more thought, and thus more time, into building it.

> It's not your time that's being wasted

More frequently than I would like, I find myself putting a band-aid fix on something that I should have spent more time thinking through up-front. In this case it's future-me whose time I wasted by not taking my time initially.
