drooby··on Ask HN: Will AI models over time converge into the same system?
Id think yes.

Intelligence is a model of reality and the future. They'll converge into the same system as a reflection of the laws of physics and human psychology.

And then when they are used as weapons they'll perhaps try to diverge and it will become an arms race to create models of the adversaries models.

_

Another way to look at it is our own history. Intelligent apes all "converged" into our one homo sapien.

drooby··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
What they linked cited sources well. Quote from the original source study.

"Housework was defined as “core chores,” or routine housework that people generally do not enjoy doing such as washing dishes, laundry, vacuuming floors and dusting … Routine housework, like cooking dinner or making beds, was captured … . Other activities such as home repairs, mowing the lawn, and shoveling snow were not in the study. Items such as gardening are usually viewed as more enjoyable; the focus here is on core housework."

Obviously completely BS biased sexist study. It doesn't get more blatant than that.

drooby··on Brain drug: The deadliest "addiction" isn't a drug. It's something much worse
"When I read the story to a group of about 100 psychiatrists at an American Psychiatric Association convention in New York City and asked them what punishment Billy should receive, the most popular suggestion was that he should be locked in a cage with vicious dogs and torn to pieces."

I come across info bits like this every once in a while and I can't help be think... were they really answering the question truthfully, and just having a little laugh to themselves? Or, are we really this close to reverting to midieval behavior if our modern justice system crumbles

drooby··on My experiment living in a tent in Hong Kong's jungle

drooby··on The Death of the Digital Nomad
My company allows short-term work from anywhere. I have taken advantage of it twice now, and I'm currently packing my bags for a third. Each trip one full month in another country.

As long as my company has this policy I will be at my company. This policy is amazing. Full stop. I thought I needed a sabbatical, I actually just needed this.

I feel just as a productive if not more productive while on these work-cations. I come back energized about life and my job.

I went almost 7 years without having a vacation where I returning thinking "wow, i feel refreshed and I want to go home". These trips actually, finally, solved this. I'm no longer feeling burnt out and that is incredible.

So, if any employers are reading this.. take note.

drooby··on EA Pushes Full Return to Office, Effectively Ends Remote Hiring
No, but many of them may have signed agreements that provided tax breaks for their office location.

Local businesses want humans near them.. that was the agreement, and the government wants that generated tax revenue.

Many of this big orgs are not "maintaining their side of the agreement" - hence pressure to return.. lest tax breaks get challenged.

drooby··on Spanish Shipwreck Reveals Evidence of Earliest Known Pet Cats to Arrive in US
I've spent a lot of money trying to solve this problem.. including buying the $700 litter robot, etc.. (that thing is not worth it at all btw)

The best litter box is the Tidy Cats Breeze (if your cat accepts it)

Bad smells (usually) (mostly) come from urine mixing with feces.. this litter box separates urine from feces, and the pellets and pads are engineered to control odors. Plus, the pellets are easier to cleanup than other boxes..

If you use that litter box, and feed your cat foods that it digests well - which in general usually means feeding your cat healthy food.. then cleanup is going to be very easy and painless.

drooby··on Avoiding Skill Atrophy in the Age of AI
This is also reminding me of Feynman's notes on Brazil education.. rote memorization of science without deep understanding
drooby··on The hidden cost of AI coding
I've been singin' this song for years. We should return to Small Data. Hand picked, locally sourced, data. Data I can buy at a mom and pop shop. Data I can smell, data I can feel, data I can yearn for.

Gone are those days.

drooby··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
I would suspect this is extremely dangerous. The female genome is intricately evolved to handle the hormone war of pregnancy.
drooby··on Eugenics Isn't Dead–It's Thriving in Tech
Agreed.. I mean if you even support someone choosing a partner because they are sexually attractive is that not a form of eugenics?

Facial symmetry is correlated with genetic health.. and so on..

All parents care about "improving the genetic quality of their children".

drooby··on Fake images that fooled the world
What if Bigfoot just happens to walk similarly to how people in gorilla costumes walk?

I mean after all.. Bigfoot is a humanoid..

drooby··on American explains why he will continue to have his product made in China
You appear to be expressing the same pushback and disbelief that this guy says all American companies have.. while this guy is claiming "Chinese companies just do it"

I suspect this guy isn't lying. I suspect China is an order of magnitude ahead of us in these kinds of manufacturing spaces. Hence, these tariffs aren't going to work.

drooby··on I was wrong. CRDTs are the future
This is going to be a naive and stupid question perhaps... but here it goes.

What optimization are we chasing here that's worth all this effort and brain power that will be so amazing in 10 years?

I've been using real-time collaborative editing tools for the past decade and it's "good enough". We.. collaborate... and then we go about our day.. almost zero friction 99.9% of the time.

This just doesn't really feel like a real problem to me. A theoretically interesting problem, sure..

drooby··on Recent AI model progress feels mostly like bullshit
I asked GPT-4.5 and it searched the web and immediately gave me a "yes" with paragraphs of sources cited.
drooby··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
I think it's actually extremely simple.. because the herd mentality is extremely simple. Intellectuals think it's complex because intellectuals love complexity.. This is what happened..

The right witnessed riots over the past decade. These riots were in response to police brutality and perceived racism. The ideas behind anti-racism spawned a perceived new ideology - "wokism". This frightened the right. Intellectuals on the right mapped the origins of this new ideology to philosophies from elite institutions. Therefore, these institutions must be punished to be kept in check.

It's really that simple..

What I find interesting about this guy is that in a way he actually is "caving" to the demands of the administration. This uni president advocates for more heterodox thinking - which is in alignment with what the Trump admin wants as well... maybe that's why Wesleyan won't be punished..

drooby··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
He states in the interview that Wesleyan has NIH grants. They are preparing to let scientists go if it comes to it.
drooby··on AI was enemy No. 1 during Hollywood strikes. Now it's in Oscar-winning films
Christopher Waltz is the perfect example of this.

The world is filled with world class actors. Waltz was a world class actor for most of his adult life.. and then he met Quentin.

As he says himself... it's always been about who you know.

So, agreed, AI will just make that more apparent.

In theory if you solve for body type and looks with AI, then raw acting talent becomes higher in demand. That should been seen as a good thing for most average looking people with high acting talent.

drooby··on Brain scans of infants reveal the moment we start making memories
Haha yeah, I am used to the skepticism.. I've thought about this a lot. There are so many things I've confirmed that aren't in photographs or stories I've been told that it seems to be real.

I also have aphantasia, I have wondered if my lack of visualization has somehow empowered my long-term memory. I rely on memory for "visualizing" things.

drooby··on Brain scans of infants reveal the moment we start making memories
Something must be slightly unusual about me.. because I have retained some very early memories..

I have confirmed with my parents the placement and orientation of my crib. I can tell you the exact process that my parents performed to change my diaper. I remember being bathed in my tub with my toys.. list goes on. These are visual memories, I can see them right now. I'm nearly certain they are real.. it's possible my brain has made some up, but I've confirmed enough with my parents that I feel confident that they are real.

I swear I remember waking up in the middle of the night once in my crib.. heart beating out of my chest.. I was really scared of something.. and I just remember this pure consciousness .. staring up into the darkness. Same consciousness I have now.

drooby··on Chatbots could spark the next big mental health crisis
Thank you for sharing. I'm very happy to hear this is helping for you
drooby··on Heavy chatbot usage is correlated with loneliness and reduced socialization
I really didn’t think I’d be saying this… but I genuinely feel ChatGPT has positively impacted my mental health.

I often use it as a therapist. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but it actually works pretty well. It has an exceptionally high EQ and often uses language far better than I ever could to help uncover the thoughts and feelings I’m processing.

Sometimes, just finding the right words to express myself relieves a great deal of stress, and by God, these bots are good with words…

drooby··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
The whole point is new buyers..

People are protesting Musk. Something like 75% of Musk's current wealth comes from Tesla stock.

Tesla stock is going down.. so it is helping the cause

drooby··on Trump demands admissions overhaul and control of academic department at Columbia
And where will all the right leaning folks concerned about the Twitter File's government suppression of speech be? Silence.. guaranteed silence...

Because they don't actually care about freedom or speech. Just their own speech.

drooby··on What makes lost boys such easy marks for cons
You're completely right..

The left is afraid to invest in men's issues out of fear of suppressing efforts of uplifting women. It's a fallacy.

To thread this needle, the left can and should frame men's advocacy as a form of women's health issues. Men and women are obviously interdependent... healthy men means healthy women.

Another good first step is acknowledging the biological differences that influence men to behave the way they do (testosterone, being one major factor).. but things like this starts to complicate other ideologies about sex and gender.. it's a mess..

drooby··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
It would be very on character. seems to be SOP for these stooges
drooby··on What are non intelligent people like me supposed to do for money?
God damn.. I'm near the top 5% of income for my age bracket and I feel the same..

Just... gahh... what is the point of this.. I feel the same way minus roomates... funny enough, I'm actually considering moving back in with housemates because living by myself is so uneventful.. I've been on the dating app hamster wheel for years.. Something is so broken here.. I'm not so sure wealth is even the answer..

I've been researching "intentional communities"

drooby··on Show HN: A website that heatmaps your city based on your housing preferences
This is cool but I don't think it fits my use case..

Seems like I have to pick criteria that have exact venues.. I want to pick abstract things like "walking distance from grocery", "biking distance from climbing gym" "1 hour drive to national park"

drooby··on Excavated: 52 Egyptian Mummies. Over a Dozen Had Mysterious Golden Tongues

There are many organizations and universities that perform similar research. I.e forensic anthropology
