drm237··on Matt Cutts Responds on Google's Paid Link Campaign
Are there any provisions to this policy to ensure that it's not abused? It would be trivially easy to create "sponsored" links on behalf of your competitor in order to get them penalized.
drm237··on I Saw An Extremely Subtle Bug Today And I Just Have To Tell Someone
While not directly related to this post, I feel like it's a good time to point out how great Github is. Patrick hosts everything himself (for the SEO benefit I would assume) which is fine, but it means we can't post issues, watch the abingo repo for changes like this, submit pull requests, etc. I can't imagine that many people searching for ABingo turn into BCC customers so is the SEO benefit at the expense of a great abingo community really worth it?
drm237··on MongoDB 2.0 Should Have Been 1.0
There's a difference between product names for marketing and version numbers used in development.
drm237··on Google Fiber: 151Mbps down / 92Mbps up
My DSL in SF is pretty good then:

--- google.com ping statistics --- 26 packets transmitted, 26 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 9.077/15.996/34.578/7.464 ms

drm237··on What Happened to the Future?
Someone forgot to set their Google Analytics ID. Requirement one to inventing the future: be able to follow instructions.
drm237··on Airbnb Has Arrived: Raising Mega-Round at a $1 Billion+ Valuation
I assumed it was to get the best deal on a bed. If it's in a hotel room, fine with me. Some probably do it just for the experience though.
drm237··on Friends to Gmail
From a privacy standpoint, that doesn't mean anything since you're still granting the FB App permissions which, could then be used server side.
drm237··on Chromebook
All of your points also apply to the iPad.
drm237··on The High Cost of Low Teacher Salaries
If an article complaining about teacher salaries doesn't mention that most teachers get their summers off, I find it difficult to believe any other points it tries to make. I knew a few teachers that worked jobs in the summer to supplement their income and that seems pretty reasonable given that the vast majority of people I know work all 12 months.
drm237··on Fructose: compile Ruby into PHP
The only reason this seems at all useful would be to take advantage of cheap shared hosting that can only run php. But that's hardly a good reason given that you can run a ruby (rack-based) app on heroku for free!
drm237··on Voyager Set to Enter Interstellar Space
SpaceX in a few more years should be able to do human transportation to orbit. Virgin Galactic is for space tourism and doen't fulfill any of the roles the shuttles were used for. When the shuttle retires, there really isn't anything else (in the US) that comes close to replacing it.
drm237··on SpaceX aims to put man on Mars in 10-20 years
Coming back isn't required if the goal were to create a settlement on mars.
drm237··on SpaceX aims to put man on Mars in 10-20 years
I'm not sure we need to dramatically reduce the population in order for the Earth to sustain us, we just can't let it continue to grow unchecked forever.

According to the FAO, the earth could feed up to 12 billion people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger#World_statistics

drm237··on AWS is down, but here's why the sky is falling
The same steps you would take in your own datacenters to ensure high availability would work in the cloud to ensure the same availability so I'm not sure what your point is. Measuring the availability of a few zones from one provider and broadly labeling the cloud as unreliable is a flawed argument. Netflix, for example, is entirely on AWS and is still running well today.
drm237··on Running a Modern Startup on PHP
CodeIgniter is bloated? It doesn't even include an ORM! There are some many things missing from it that other frameworks include that I can't even fathom what the author is talking about.

Having switched from PHP to Ruby a year ago, I now find Ruby's syntax beautiful and incredibly powerful. If you don't like the implied parentheses, it turns out, you can go ahead and add them!

Edit: because I didn't proofread the first time...

drm237··on Ask HN: How are lean startups easily accepting CC payments?
Here's my horror story, let me know if you can figure out where I raised a flag because I can't. I was using Website Payments Pro with Spreedly for over a year, when I applied for access to their Adaptive Payments APIs. After getting approved a few days later, all of my spreedly subscriptions started failing with the error that I had to include the CVV. You can't store CVVs so it was now impossible to process recurring subscriptions with WPP.

Multiple calls to PayPal were useless. They told me that when I applied for adaptive payments, they reviewed my entire account and decided to require that I always include CVVs. In over a year, I had almost no chargebacks so fraud shouldn't be the reason.

The next day I applied for Authorize.net and was accepted the following day. It's about about the same price as when I was with PayPal, but with none of the hassle.

In summary, if you want credit card based recurring subscriptions, PayPal is just as expensive, significantly more restrictive, has terribly designed APIs, a sandbox environment that doesn't work as often as it does, and is kind of like smoking next to a barrel of gun powder.

drm237··on Name.com: Another Unscrupulous Registrar
Yes, that's the logical conclusion. But purchasing a domain with the thought that dns hosting is included in the purchase price only to find out the the service doesn't work as it should, is valid a reason to be upset IMHO.
drm237··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
If comments cost karma, some users will just submit more stories to try to earn more karma so they can keep commenting. That could decrease the overall quality of articles. One option would be to stop awarding karma for stories so that they only way to earn karma is through good comments. That would conflict with comments costing karma though because you'd never be able to earn the initial amount.
drm237··on Behold The World's Largest Photo Ever Taken Indoor: 40 Gigapixels of Awesome
For something like this, why wouldn't you copy the user experience of Google Maps rather than make people learn a new pan and zoom behavior?
drm237··on How We Got Owned by a Few Teenagers (and Why It Will Never Happen Again)
Can you explain your "1% are sellouts" comment? Are you saying that top-tier crackers that accept money for their services are sellouts?
drm237··on [dead]
Is the video stream even accessible via the headphone jack? That would be news to me.
drm237··on You won't find FSF on Facebook
Don't look now but Adsense and every other ad network can track your movements online too! In keeping with their Facebook stance, FSF should block the GoogleBot and get off of Google too.
drm237··on Dear Google, I Have More Than 10,000 Contacts
A classic Rolodex holds about 400 cards. So he's at 25 Rolodexes. That would be a sight to see sitting on a desk!
drm237··on Why We Stick With PHP (and don't move to Ruby or Python)
That would not be a "47 year old language".
drm237··on When to Use PayPal vs. Merchant Account
That's an interesting point. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if there's a difference, although our precent of chargebacks is so low, I'm not sure we'll have enough data in 6 months.
drm237··on Can you use PHP without frameworks nowadays?
> Summing it up, a framework tries to save you work by make you define an overly complex configuration, that has to accomodate every possible use case.

I guess if all you looked at was the Zend framework you would have this opinion. It's incredible inaccurate to say this about all frameworks in general though.

drm237··on When to Use PayPal vs. Merchant Account
I used to recommend PayPal Website Payments Pro until they screwed me recently. I assumed the people that were abused by PayPal were few and far between until it also happened to me. Now I tell everyone to get a real merchant account. It's just not worth gambling with your ability to process transactions.
drm237··on Ask HN: What kind of personal financial investment do you do?

  > 'Oh you should have held' is hindsight advice, it's not real advice.
I think Warren Buffett would disagree with you.
drm237··on Ask HN: What kind of personal financial investment do you do?
You sold because you were afraid of another "double dip" that didn't happen, and now you think you had "pretty good forward-sight"?

"You should have held on to it" is not hindsight, that's typically stock market investment advice. Unless a company's stats have changed to the point where it's now a bad investment, you should hold it and ride out the storm.

drm237··on MongoDB vs. Clustrix Benchmark
How long does it take to add a column to that table with 300MM rows? Does Clustrix require schema modifications?
