drivebyacct2··on An encrypted message to Edward Snowden
Hm, unfortunate that those who know what it is will recognize it and not think that and the rest will be confused and close the tab and move on. And the comments (on the Wired article) aren't remotely helpful.
drivebyacct2··on An encrypted message to Edward Snowden
I don't get it, unless Snowden's published his public key somewhere and Wired has some really, really important information for him?
drivebyacct2··on A gay island community created by Italy's Fascists
Also my understanding was that it often was a matter of pederasty rather than "love" like when people talk about "marriage equality" nowadays or what not.
drivebyacct2··on Stop Watching Us Gathers Over 100,000 signatures to fight NSA surveillance
A secret watch list? Holy shit, I wonder if they constantly surveil people on that list. Oh wait.
drivebyacct2··on "Microsoft engineer" on Xbox1
I don't get that conclusion. Steam does it and they're applauded, even by many who "hate" DRM. Microsoft does it (and maybe doesn't detail the entire vision/value well) and gets shit on. Much like a lot of things that MS does.
drivebyacct2··on "Microsoft engineer" on Xbox1
>Dear Microsoft, all you have to do is ask your target audience what they think - you might be suprised.

I mean yes, don't introduce the Kin, but at the same time, if Apple'd asked what consumers want, we'd be thinking the RAZR is cool instead of the DROID RAZR.

drivebyacct2··on "Microsoft engineer" on Xbox1
I suspected as much as well. The family share feature of the new Xbox is pretty damn impressive and permissive. And they have to have you turn your damn xbox on and connect to the internet because they have to manage your access to those games. Otherwise I can just loan out the game to 10 people and they can play them forever offline without paying for them.
drivebyacct2··on Bank robbery suspect wants NSA phone records for his defense
In legal terminology to "prove" something doesn't "indicate the truth" about something? sorry, maybe I'm confused, I guess I don't know legal lingo or am misunderstanding.
drivebyacct2··on Bank robbery suspect wants NSA phone records for his defense
How is disprove any less strong than deny? If anything, it would be affirm or negate an alibi.
drivebyacct2··on Bank robbery suspect wants NSA phone records for his defense
I don't know why but this put this all in a whole extra sharp perspective for me.
drivebyacct2··on Bank robbery suspect wants NSA phone records for his defense
More like, withholding evidence! Think about it. That metadata could very plausibly confirm or deny alibis (or at least help confirm/deny maybe).
drivebyacct2··on Files and folders
Yeah, whatever. For practical purposes, it nearly has, and it won't really technically go away, the interface to it will get progressively dumber. See also: mobile (native) apps.
drivebyacct2··on iOS 7
So now that Apple has moved on it's acceptable to call the old UI dated and ugly. Cool, glad we can be honest about it now.
drivebyacct2··on Decentralizing Trillian
If anything it makes the original question even more pertinent. It's the "what" but not the "why".
drivebyacct2··on Dilute PRISM – Use Open Source Alternatives
Use nouvaeu! Works better than the nvidia driver for basically everything but performance (I know, a silly statement, but I have an extremely convoluted xorg.conf file because Nvidia's proprietary driver in Linux is nearly worthless without a good EDID. (Even though it works perfectly in Windows/OS X)
drivebyacct2··on Changes in rankings of smartphone search results
I don't get this snark. Ads work because they provide some value to someone that causes them to click. If simply inundating someone with ads was enough to make "advertising" work, then Google wouldn't exist and we'd all be Don Drapers.
drivebyacct2··on Changes in rankings of smartphone search results
If you don't do redirects, what's the problem? If you handle desktop web links and open it in your rich RIA "app", then everyone's happy and Google won't care.

But if I click an email from your email http://you/richclient/whatever and get taken to http://m.you/ I will close the tab and never come back (and apparently Google will slap you around a bit)

drivebyacct2··on Google’s Real Secret Spy Program? Secure FTP
Congratulations, that's the first time I've managed to laugh about PRISM in the last week.
drivebyacct2··on Edit your code in the cloud with bitbucket
I guess I always expect UI chrome around CodeMirror, but yeah, it obviously says CodeMirror right there, DOH, I missed the color syntax highliting when I skimmed through. I still don't see how to do multifile commits all from the web-ui which is what I meant to reference. I can do one-off files on GitHub but they're a commit a piece.

Both GitHub and BitBucket are really close to letting me do significant editting of code from my browser which is still very useful for me. There are tons of times I'd love to be able to fire up GitHub and hack on some files without having to actually commit to persist changes. But then again, maybe I'm projecting feature creep on what is ultimately a VCS.

drivebyacct2··on Why Mailjet’s Email Delivery Service Is Not Concerned by #Prism
It was a little tongue in cheek. By all means, if this prompts companies to be more transparent and they can use that as a marketing differentiator, more power to you.
drivebyacct2··on Why Mailjet’s Email Delivery Service Is Not Concerned by #Prism
Or if you're selling an email product and want to get your front page slot by throwing #prism into a headline.
drivebyacct2··on Edit your code in the cloud with bitbucket
Please. make. new. accounts. read-only.
drivebyacct2··on Edit your code in the cloud with bitbucket
I was hoping they'd leapfrog GitHub and allow you to stage actual commits and use something like CodeMirror to edit.
drivebyacct2··on How OS X “Mavericks” works its power-saving magic
I'd sacrifice a lot to have that be the default, just out of charity for everyone elses' benefit.
drivebyacct2··on Google’s Real Secret Spy Program? Secure FTP
Thank god it's "secure". FTPS or SFTP, dare anyone ask?
drivebyacct2··on iOS 7 looks familiar
What in the ever loving hell is that arrow for then?

edit: I guess it seems obvious now...

drivebyacct2··on Connecting the PRISM Dots: A New Theory on How PRISM Works
I've sorta been saying this for a while. Earlier on my G+, but also here.

>(which I suspect were simply the dates that the companies brought up infrastructure to be able to quickly and easily comply with FISA warrants. Which means "direct access" is true, but it also means that "we were forced to make it easy to give the government what they want as soon as they need it")

This telling of the tale fits with pretty much what everyone said. The form-fill denials are true and make sense. The governments repeated references to FISA make sense, and it gives them a way to justify their legality.

The rest of the article is great for those cough that keep saying "FISA warrants" as if the warrants part means anything.

I mean, the API for this automated "Takeout [NSA style]" would be super easy. I can imagine it. And all the quirks in the spec. "Check the FISA warrant ID (or don't, it's just a mocked interface that returns true, same result as the court records)", etc.

drivebyacct2··on BitCoin is a public ledger
Haha, even here, misinformed (often angry) comments are directed at Bitcoin supporters that align precisely with what you're saying. Some of the accussations are simply flat out incompatible with an open/public ledger, let alone getting into anything Bitcoin specific.

And that's despite stuff like this being posted repeatedly. In fact, this is a repost from like ~~2~~ 10 days ago, isn't it? ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5796935 )

drivebyacct2··on Mozilla should move Persona out of the US
Okay, but for anyone like us, we can self-host and just make sure it stays mirrored and up to date. The only other bit is doing the verification on your own server instead of trusting them. That's as big a deal as anything.
drivebyacct2··on Majority Views NSA Phone Tracking as Acceptable Anti-terror Tactic
I see. I would tend to agree. Some Americans are ignorant and stupid about a lot of things (I say this as an American) but I think you're right. I mean, part of that also is being aware of the implications of saying "I have nothing to hide", etc, but that's for the other discussions.

Anyway, to be clear, I don't think this is one of those "Why does America care about the Kardashians instead of this?!!" issues.
