drited··on I made a robot to cut my hair with scissors [video]
I wish he kept the Mullet. It truly was art.
drited··on SEC issues $3.8M whistleblower award
You can get a list of these on the SEC website. Another recent one was in amount 27 million. Some pay a fraction of the fines awarded. Big numbers here particularly if the whistle-blower approaches it in the right way. I have a few ideas on that...
drited··on Deepfake used to attack activist couple shows new disinformation frontier
Could you please expand on what you mean? From the context I think you're saying it's a type of guerrilla marketing but the link doesn't seem to align with that. Nor does the article because the academics really do seem to have been falsely accused by the fake student/journalist mentioned in the article.
drited··on Never Hertz to Ask
Cost of borrow for hertz shares reached over 140 percent last week. Some of the purchasing could well have been driven by hedge funds which were short but had to buy stock to exit their positions after available shares to borrow dried up and their brokers forced them out of the position.
drited··on EA will be releasing the C&C Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert source code under GPL3
Anyone remember the v2 rashdown map that someone made which became popular online? Bottleneck at either side, tanks through the middle, Tesla towers and v2 rockets to shoot over the rocks.
drited··on Saving money on international payments as a remote freelancer
Am I correct in thinking that interactive brokers won't send from your brokerage account to someone else? If so I guess the process would be to send back to a Revolut account of yours in the target currency after conversion at IB and then send it to the recipient from Revolut /Transfer wise using a same currency transfer?
drited··on WHO launches global megatrial of the four most promising coronavirus treatments
Seems strange that they're not going to use a control group that receives a placebo.

Not the op and I don't know where the age data is but for the regional data on confirmed cases, tests and deaths, iterate the "24" in this URL up by 2 each day at 6pm Italy time to see them. Alternatively go to the main domain and go to the 'news and media' section

drited··on Outbreak – playable simulations of a disease outbreak
This is cool but your hospital beds figure needs to be reduced dramatically because I believe you have taken the number of total hospital beds, not intensive care beds for the critically ill. In my country, the number of total beds is about 48 times the number of intensive care beds.
drited··on Why does gigabit internet via coax cable not offer symmetrical speed like fiber?
Capex as a percent of sales for the dominant cable companies is generally 15 to 20 percent. Why do you think there was no investment?
drited··on Show HN: I wrote a book for engineers that want to become engineering managers
Indeed, especially at a small company where it makes a big difference to have a capable person in charge. Even if it's not as fun as being on the front lines, it can be the responsible/right thing to do if you're the most qualified to do it.
drited··on The first non-bullshit book about culture I've read
If I remember correctly Kahneman said not to do this though and to just go by the quantitative evaluation you mentioned in the previous point. 'Final decision will be a collective decision of the hiring team'
drited··on Rooms can be as bright as the outdoors
Would you have any pictures? This sounds fascinating (with the caveats you mentioned of course)
drited··on Rooms can be as bright as the outdoors
In response to this part of your comment, f. Lux allows you to specify programs like Netflix, VLC, Photoshop where it will automatically turn off 'you're paying $13/mo for Netflix to watch shows with multi-million dollar budgets and dedicated colorists, and you start watching Orange is the New Black and you make it yellow,'
drited··on Teacher Effects on Student Achievement and Height: A Cautionary Tale
Ruling out teacher impact on height without testing is perhaps not strictly scientific?

We really don't know what is true unless we test it. I know it sounds ridiculous but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that teacher opinion of student capabilities influences social status which in turn influences release of growth hormones which influence height. Aren't there other species which grow when they rise to the top of the pack as growth hormones are released to assist in maintaining that status? Not saying it's likely but if left untested we cannot rule that out. There have been plenty of surprises in science when we went and actually tested what we previously presumed to be implausible.

drited··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
There's a book called Mathemagics with chapters which take about an hour to read which will teach you how to remember numbers and do mental arithmetic
drited··on Sweden Drops Julian Assange Rape Investigation
I thought the solution to iterated prisoner's dilemma was what you described except with occasional forgiveness to see if both sides can get over the negative tit for tat spiral?
drited··on The stockmarket is now run by computers, algorithms and passive managers
There's also a person who can/will yank the power cord out of the wall when/if it looks like the algo is going haywire and losing a ton of money, like happened during the quant quake.
drited··on A personal story about 10× development
Are there general work practices of yours vs theirs which you can share that would give insight into why their pace was so much slower? Or was it all meetings :)
drited··on Hedge funds use satellite images to beat Wall Street
And another about how the Rothchilds had a better messaging system (flags? Burning pyres? Pigeons?) after the of the battle of Waterloo and traded British Government bonds on the London exchange after the win (first openly selling to head fake the market which knew of their messaging time advantage and then buying through nominees in the ensuing panic)
drited··on uBlock Origin 1.20
The end of the book 'The PayPal Wars' gives fascinating context on how development just completely dies in a corporate environment. They went from being able to roll major new features in a weekend to requiring months just to schedule a meeting to discuss a font change. It's a fascinating read when we now look back at how PayPal just stagnated under Ebay's ownership.
drited··on The Rate of Return on Everything, 1870–2015 [pdf]
I see, I was going by the note under table 2 that said 'annual global returns in 16 countries, equal weighted'.

I did find another reason that reported housing returns are too high though. This is their key input 'net rental yields [which] use rental income net of maintenance costs, ground rent, and other irrecoverable expenditure'

That neglects to factor in that after say 50 years most houses need to be replaced or massively renovated. Factor in that expenditure and the real returns should be somewhere between 1 and 2 percent lower.

drited··on The Rate of Return on Everything, 1870–2015 [pdf]
Does anyone else think equal weighting of the 16 countries used despite different size and periods of data availability for the different countries could result in misleading results? The housing returns seemed surprisingly high to me.
drited··on Stripe’s fifth engineering hub is Remote
What's wrong with targeting equal disposable incomes (after covering essentials like housing/schools/childcare etc)?

I see this in my field where I work remote and most people in my field work in NYC or London. My gross income is way lower than my former classmates who settled in NYC. However I have a bigger house, equally good school and childcare for 1/10th the annual cost etc. Don't see why I should get a salary that reflects the massively inflated cost of living in a city that I don't live in. Instead I think it should be about targeting a quality of life commensurate with the contribution made & scarceness of the skillset. The cost of providing that quality of life will vary dramatically between someone living in a rural area vs San Francisco and so should the pay imo.

drited··on Apple Watch detects irregular heart beat in large U.S. study
An electrical engineering friend who did some hardware development work on these a few years back suggested that noise in the observations was a fairly significant challenge. Seems the devices use a lot of data smoothing to counteract this.
drited··on Sunlight through glass does not provide Vitamin D
That is interesting. I had read that 500 was ineffective but did not know that 10000 was effective. If you've done the research what is the most reliable source you found ?

drited··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
How developing an AI control system that reduces energy usage in health care?

I'm half serious but all in earnest. Most people specialise. In a world of specialists, perhaps you can distinguish yourself by knowing a little about several fields. Health care folks will look at you as the magician who knows about AI even if you're a dwarf by comparison to other AI folks.
