drharby··on Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email
shut up and ship it

I love the simple sourcing of requirements. Good job!

drharby··on The deepest hole we have ever dug
I want to tag on the remainder of my profile for you, since you conveniently skipped it in your hate speech.

>Live long and prosper.

I hold a genuine desire for strangers to live a fruitful life.

Please, consider revisiting the source of your anger and hate to a stranger and ask yourself "what is the effect I aim to have?" If you are aiming to hate as a cathartic release, I suggest writing a journal. If you are aiming to hate as a means of cruelty to a stranger online, do it anonymously without your real name attached to it.

drharby··on Napoleon’s Vision for a New Imperial Rome
I feel like that's a broad and general comparison. It would be equal to ask that of the UK during the height of their reach.

To do any real comparison you need to isolate something quantifiable. For example, languages. Latin influence is real and measurable. English is derivative from Germanic languages and was borrowed, and we didn't really export English...the UK did that. Why is Spanish one of the more commonly spoken Latin languages? The spanish crown was real good at that whole conquest thing, with the germs and the horses and the etc.

America? We influence geopolitics thats for sure.

drharby··on The deepest hole we have ever dug
This is a real example of what I was alluding to. Environmental impact isn't all polar ice caps and methane gas. An unprofessionally dug hole is a LIABILITY.

But personally attacking strangers on the internet is acceptable too.

drharby··on The deepest hole we have ever dug
Everything about this comment is a personal attack and sidesteps my real concern--the flagrant disregard for the environment just because someone can do it.

And Don I have to tell you, I am not a troll and I have to ask what crime did I commit expressing myself?

Was the post script necessary?

Maybe I get heated because this forum claims a standard is being held while I see bias persist

Maybe i believe it is important in a healthy democracy that the right conversations happen.

Maybe I hate bullies. You def. Are being a bully.

You disregard a real talking point on how little liability we hold people to disrupting land, and just attack me, AND YOU CLAIM YOU CAN BC YOU PERCEIVE ME AS A TROLL.

I stand by my profile description bc this is a diverse community.

I have a question for you, what is your purpose of your rant? To make me feel bad and you feel superior?

drharby··on The deepest hole we have ever dug
I am not trolling.

this is the same forum where people minimize their consumer garbage output to one bag a year and reduce aviation usage to reduce carbon footprint. I find it EXTREMELY condescending that you ridicule my opinion. Whats the scope for scales of environmental impact that matters?

Every single construction project in an area where an endangered species lives, the USAF must conduct an environmental impact study for said species from the project, even if its a toilet.

I am very much extremely reactionary, this is a news forum. People post news and react to it.

drharby··on The deepest hole we have ever dug
I want to know what the environmental impact on that hole...i mean where is the humor in destroying the planet just because we can?

That hole makes me unnervingly angry. And I can't be the only one.

drharby··on The End of the Bonus Culture Is Coming to Wall Street?
Probably buy side
drharby··on Cities move to ban dollar stores, blaming them for residents’ poor diets
Sounds like anticompetitive muscling out with a trivial and nondata supported claim for justification. If diets were a real concern of governments, there exists more appropriate policy measures, but passing laws that apply pressure on the free market with no effect on the bottomline of a city's budget is just easy so I can see why they are doing it.
drharby··on War Is a Racket (1933)
Government doesn't measure ROI. It measure impact on policy goals. A government is not a business.
drharby··on The gene drive dilemma: we can alter entire species, but should we?

Huh - TIL
drharby··on A harassment campaign on Goodreads
Circumstantial.

Go watch Zodiac to get an idea of how circumstantial evidence is insufficient

drharby··on Ask HN: I've been slacking off at Google for 6 years. How can I stop this?
Context helps. It isn't a trivial datam. S/Google/Army/g the responses would vary wildly regarding the military industrial complex, impact of contributing to it, etc.
drharby··on EU beckons Indian tech talent
I get the impression from your rant that you're dismissing the parents comments core complaint about the adverse impact of increased labor supply on the middle class and then follow on to namecalling. This style of commentary seems beneath HN's aspirational high signal low noise.
drharby··on Reasons Why Job Seekers Are Not Given Feedback
I've never given a cover letter in my 10 year career thus far.
drharby··on Big tech companies have been at the cutting edge of corporate tax avoidance
Reminds me of that episode of futurama where they almost become rich from being acquired by Mom. "I suddently have an opinion about the capital gains tax!"

The tax bill paid by new grads for their rsus is usually their first experience with non-income tax flavored taxes, and I think we have an incentive to ask for cash in leiu of rsus for that exact reason. Of course, not going to complain too mich.

drharby··on The internet doesn't care about multiplayer games
Ok, tell that to the wow classic servers all operating a medium to high capacity.

EDIT: oh I see, this is an ad, not news, got it.

drharby··on Ask HN: Burning Out
I disagree, i find it to be a point pf clarification but not rude. Perhaps I have a different cultural expectation than you do
drharby··on Indiana manipulated report on Amazon worker’s death, investigation says
I don't understand, are you mocking me or do we have a bonafide and well respected PhD of Philosophy with a track record in this comment thread?

If the former, I'm super disappointed but not surprised. It is no secret that anyone who remotely questions the criticism of Amazon is downvoted on this forum.

And I say that as someone who avoids spending a dollar out of protest against that company. I really find their practices terrible.

drharby··on Indiana manipulated report on Amazon worker’s death, investigation says
And the kicker I'd like to add to the conversation is, 'who's morals are more moral than the others?'
drharby··on CS 007: Personal Finance for Engineers – Stanford University 2017-20
Can you sell the house and keep the cash? You own the house, the deed is in your name. You have a debt with the bank. The bank has your house as collateral but the city chargers you taxes on it because you own it.

>Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. That destroys intellectual curiosity, the value of the site.

I stand by my ground in original [now flagged] comment that my request for more clarification was a valid request.

If my claim of political shilling is against the standard, i expect to see political opinion be recognized and classified as rule breaking or the conversation entertained.

It is an application of a double standard that is poisoning to see here.

drharby··on Facebook head of news cofounded site critical of Elizabeth Warren
So to clarify, so long as one has plausible deniability in spreading political opinion, there is a punishable offense for asking for clarification (as i have done in this ggp, your gp comment) as a means to get to the meat of the root claim?

This is in my opinion poisoning of any discussion.

I'll admit, my gp your p comment does in fact jmp the gun, but my original comment was thought out.

It is, again, discouraging and I as a desiring participant find it harder and harder to engage in these topics on this forum.

drharby··on South Koreans fake their funerals for life lessons
Reminded me of the futurama episode of Benders fake funeral.

I was the same way. Getting letters from Boston schools got me thinking outside my farming community in Missouri
drharby··on U.S. opens a national security review of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly
I suppose my usage of the word 'political pressure' is nonspecific to US Government entities and more toward the general definition of a general entity's real politik. For example, i would consider a small business owner paying into a protection raquet by a local mafia to be 'caving to political pressure'

Thats where we need people to have a conduit of accountability for the double standard. My ethnicity and sexual orientation is not their marketing soundbyte.
