drewr··on AT&T's network rocks, it's iPhone's problem
Don't you mean they are mutually exclusive?
drewr··on Linode adds datacenter in Europe
I should have noted in the title that it's in London, UK.
drewr··on Aaron Swartz: How I Hire Programmers
Always worth mentioning: "The Inverse Power of Praise" http://nymag.com/news/features/27840/
drewr··on Jbellis responds to Cassandra FUD
This is the post he's responding to: http://www.roadtofailure.com/2009/10/29/hbase-vs-cassandra-n....
drewr··on Ask HN: Little things/tools that improved your work or life lately?
Is this Emacs 23-only? I don't get that behavior with 22.3.2.
drewr··on Ledger: Command-line double-entry accounting
Not sure what your accountant wants, but the normal register output is very simple to read.

If you need something more customized, the python integration coming in HEAD gives you access to the internals without having to speak C++. It's still not quite done, but it'll give you enough power to do whatever you want.

drewr··on Cray - A Clojure Ray Tracer
I'll take anything over "clj-ray" or "rayjure."
drewr··on Hazelcast - In-Memory Data Grid for Java
This reminds me of Terracotta. Anyone care to contrast the two?
drewr··on 30 years of C
If my high school CS teacher had told me that Mac OS had been written in Pascal, I would have been slightly more enthused about learning it. I had a similar, nebulous unease with it as dadhacker and really enjoyed C when I got to college.
drewr··on Talk with Rich Hickey: Time is the New Memory
No, it's not the right tool for every job. Rich isn't arguing that kernel drivers be written in Clojure. His work addresses the pain he feels -- writing concurrent, high-level applications that model the real world.

Also, you'd be amazed at how much control you have over the underlying system in Clojure; you just rarely have to wield it.

drewr··on Why Pair Programming Is Not For the Masses
In Obie's defense, he is one of Rails's original "imperious douchebags."
drewr··on [dead]
I'm more interested in facts about successful entrepreneurs.
drewr··on [dead]
You're probably right, but for some reason that 'a' in there has caused me to pronounce it 'day-mon' since I can remember.
drewr··on Sd - a peer to peer bugtracker I actually like
I'm intrigued by Prophet. Anybody here using it?

Prophet is a lightweight schemaless database designed for peer to peer replication and disconnected operation. Prophet keeps a full copy of your data and (history) on your laptop, desktop or server. Prophet syncs when you want it to, so you can use Prophet-backed applications whether or not you have network.

drewr··on RestMS
I often think of SMTP as well -- robust message queueing and routing with built-in failover, backoff algorithms, and myriad tools to view all the parts involved. An RFC822 message's envelope can contain infinite metadata and its body can contain text, json, xml, base64-encoded binary, you name it. You can encrypt messages with PGP, or secure the transport layer if you can determine who talks to you. There are more implementations that one can count, it works on every platform, and it doesn't scare away the systems guys.
drewr··on Bruce Schneier: Risk Intuition
Not the focus of the article, but very poignant:

Children have surprisingly perceptive risk intuition. They know when parents are serious about a threat and when their threats are empty. And they respond to the real risks of parental punishment, not the inflated risks based on parental rhetoric... There have to be real consequences.

drewr··on Warren Buffett: 2nd Stimulus Needed, Expects Longer Recession
Well said. Most of the money won't be spent for another two years and what has been spent hasn't been in the private sector. If you're going to propagandize Keynes, at least have the policy match the propaganda and let's see if it actually works.

Perhaps none of it matters. All of this assumes that Congress knows what it's voting for in the first place.

"If every member pledged to not vote for it if they hadn’t read it in its entirety, I think we would have very few votes." --Stenny Hoyer, referring to a 1,500-page health-care reform bill coming up in the House (http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=50...)

How can any of this giant, sweeping legislation be any good?

drewr··on Argonne National Laboratory's broken implementation of SHA1
You're right; the title was horrible. Thanks to whoever changed it.

No bait intended. Thought it might spur some discussion. I learn a great deal from anything crypto-related on HN.

drewr··on Facebook breaks RFC2045 with quoted printable
Props to facebook for fixing it!

Although he credits reddit, this is the only post I can find and its karma score is less than 10:

It had to be HN! :-)

drewr··on Facebook breaks RFC2045 with quoted printable
My purpose in posting the message was actually to try and get Markus's issue in front of someone other than a first-tier support person. I'm fairly certain that facebook developers frequent HN. I wanted them to at least know that they were violating a standard and someone feels the pain of their decision. I've been a mail admin. Dealing with the traffic that facebook generates is not trivial. It's akin to the hoops I would have to jump through for AOL and Hotmail five years ago.

Quoted-printable breakage is not a major problem in the long run, but if there isn't a good reason for the violation, then why not fix it? It may have just been oversight.

I used a provocative title because I wanted people to read it, mod it up, and allow fb engineers the chance to speak for themselves. If no one found it compelling then it wouldn't have garnered any karma and you wouldn't have seen it.

drewr··on Air France Flight 447: The Paradox of ‘Simplicity’
I don't understand why a thunderstorm would have affected this plane. Wouldn't it have been cruising by that time at an altitude immune to weather? Perhaps this was discussed in another thread; I haven't been following the discussions too closely.
drewr··on Complete List of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Enhancements
Breadcrumbs in 10.5 are as easy as View -> Show Path Bar, or do you mean something else?
drewr··on Debian is switching to EGLIBC
Support for different shells (GLIBC only supports bash).

What exactly does this mean? How does a libc "support" a shell? I thought it was the other way around. Clearly tons (all?) of shells already run on glibc systems. Is this something that's only relevant for embedded systems?

drewr··on There Is No Such Thing as Nuclear Waste
From what I understand, Three Mile Island wasn't a disaster, but a huge success. The safety systems worked as they should and prevented an actual disaster.
drewr··on Nobel Economist: Now Is No Time to Give Up on Markets
Agreed, head over to http://newmogul.com if you're interested in this stuff.
drewr··on The Big Takeover
No one ever asked you to stay up all night eight days a week trying to get filthy rich shorting what's left of the American auto industry or selling $600 billion in toxic, irredeemable mortgages to ex-strippers on work release and Taco Bell clerks.

Someone did ask for the latter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_Reinvestment_Act

drewr··on Counting hours doesn't make sense
Maybe I'm missing the point, but what's a good measurement of energy expenditure? You can't reflect on 6 months time and come to any helpful conclusion without data to analyze.
drewr··on "Sequential programming is dead. So stop teaching it"
Perfect timing. My copy of JCIP came in the mail yesterday.
drewr··on How Flickr polices 2.8 billion photos
"The idea is to sell the stuff -- a clear violation of the company's no-commerce rule."

You can't post pictures of stuff to sell? That's what half of craigslist uses flickr for.

drewr··on Deadlocked
Why didn't he put that on stackoverflow?
