dreen··on Russia confiscates passports of senior officials to stop defections
There is no question there is broad support for senseless violence, as evidenced by the video. But I know my friend for example, and he considers Putin and his enablers to be fascists. But of course there are also many people privately against this while publically showing support.

The point of my post was that it is not enough to help anti-Putin (and by that I mean anti-current-power-system-of-russia) leave Russia. They are as much victims here as Ukrainians who fled the war, but are sometimes treated badly.

dreen··on Russia confiscates passports of senior officials to stop defections
I have a Russian friend working in IT in Poland and he fears deportation.

Unfortunately these things are reportedly happening, the sentiment should be anti-Putin but ends up being anti-Russian, mostly thanks to Russians like these: https://t.me/glavredinfo/61841

dreen··on Disney Eliminates Its Metaverse Division
The point of useful technology is to make things more convenient. This is less convienient than typing queries on a keyboard, even if there were no HMD involved.
dreen··on The chat control proposal does not belong in democratic societies
I'm with you. For the duration of you holding public office there should be no expectation of privacy.
dreen··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
Then we have different priorities, if I spend a lot of money on a gaming machine beefy GPU I want 100% of its performance at all times and no risk of problems cutting into my limited gaming time. If there is a problem on Windows you can be sure the game devs will give it a priority over a problem on Linux.

Been a Linux user for over 20 years, still use it for work, and yes Proton does look great, but I don't see using it for gaming anytime soon.

dreen··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
I'd like to believe that, but can't shake the feeling there is a chance of performance impact or a need for special magic dance to make something work.

The teenager me would have no problem, he had a (fairly) working Enlightenment config and tried an array of distros, and it was fun to tinker. But he had way, way more time, and didn't spend his own money on the gaming hardware.

dreen··on Text only news websites (2022)
One issue is that news sites article content is written to maximise ad impressions. Ads inject between paragraphs typically so you need lots of paragraphs. You start with perhaps two paragraphs of actual information, then break it down into 4 or more and add more information about related topics. Add some opinions, maybe weave in links to related articles on your site, and you end up with 10 or so paragraphs insterspersed with ads and pictures. You can remove the ads and pictures but you can't remove the bullshit. We need a good AI tldr machine.
dreen··on Freedom Clock
I say whatever floats your boat. Which I guess could be pound-force (lbf).
dreen··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
Yep, something like that. I would have had to know if and when Im moving a year in advance, which is ridiculous. I mean it's not like I read the fine print on that, so all the better that they had no problem cancelling the fee.
dreen··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
Sometimes people you talk to have powers to change the outcome in your favour, sometimes all you need to do is ask.

I had an experience like that last year. I was cancelling my broadband in UK with Virgin, and got a £280 disconnection fee. The person who informed me said I will have to pay it in my final bill. Then over a month later I got a call from someone who's task was to see if I need a new connection where I was going. I said no, I was leaving the country. He asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I said, "you could cancel that huge penalty fee I got.." And he was just like "Sure, no problem, done."

dreen··on OpenAI Research Says 80% of U.S. Workers' Jobs Will Be Impacted by GPT
Here is something I haven't really seen considered in this context:

If AI lowers the need to hire people by x% for a given project, then it doesn't just affect existing projects/companies. It lowers the barrier of entry for running such things for everyone. This means more people will be able to run similar ventures, and they all need the (100-x)%. In the long run, the amount of work available is not lower by x%, it could be lower or higher in general, although changes definietely happen, like in any disruption.

dreen··on Venus is volcanically alive, new find shows
Sounds like a job for the Mega Maid!
dreen··on Shadows in the Big Bang Afterglow Reveal Invisible Cosmic Structures
Maybe someone who actually knows stuff can provide a better reply, I think its about alignment of structures we see in the CMB.
dreen··on Shadows in the Big Bang Afterglow Reveal Invisible Cosmic Structures
Just yesterday I was reading about the Axis of Evil https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_of_evil_(cosmology), an unexplained phenomenon observed in the CMB.

Basically we are observing more and more things out there which seem to be aligned to the plane of our solar system. Very big things, cosmologically speaking. It could just be a coincidence coupled with our brains need to see patterns in chaos, or not...

dreen··on NordVPN library and client code open-sourced
I set up my own VPN with https://github.com/trailofbits/algo

Hosted on DigitalOcean and the setup was completely automatic, it deletes its own access after its done.

Note you're still beholden to ToS of your host, but tbh they don't seem to care no matter what I do with it.

I know it from here.

dreen··on Vivaldi co-founder: Advertisers 'stole the internet from us'
Local radio stations can advertise local businesses which could be an example of good/useful targeted ad. The difference is of course the targetting is "passive" and they don't know me, at a downside of being only able to estimate the number of listeners. I'd welcome some passive system like that on the internet but have no idea how it could work.
dreen··on Mastodon: Add support for incoming rich text
Probably because large parts of population unfortunately prefers communicating with emojis. Curious if this becomes a a logographic language in future like Chinease.
dreen··on Could we make the web more immersive using a simple optical illusion?
Exactly, it violates The Toilet Principle, which states that most of the time, the user of your app wants to do the thing they came to do, then get on with their life.
dreen··on TreeTalk London – Tree Map
Missing the Noel park friendship tree. I did my driving lessons around there and always wondered why is there a tree in the MIDDLE of a narrow residential street.
dreen··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
Imho you should have already been looking at human actor porn the way you describe the AI porn, if you want a healthy approach to porn. Obviously women don't behave in real life in bed the way they do when acting out a porn scene. Obviously the digital content has long been digitally enhanced. Obviously sex in porn is to real sex what car chases in movies are to real police chace. My approach doesn't change just because its not filmed anymore. Its entertainment, but was never meant to depict realistic people having real intercourse.
dreen··on Is A.I. Art Stealing from Artists?
The article points to two problems, one being corporations profiting from other peoples copyrighted works with just an algorithm. Thats awful for sure, but the actual utility of content generated that way is questionable at best (Also, because it's new, there is a bit of a fad for it). The other is more existential and pertains to AI replacing humans in the cultural process. I don't think it's reasonble to assume this will happen anytime soon, given the state of technology which is just nowhere near enough capable for that. By the time it would be, you'd have a fully artifical human mind.
dreen··on Is A.I. Art Stealing from Artists?
This is much less of a problem than people make it out to be.

For a lot of people, art is a way to connect to other human minds. If you know there is no human mind directly involved in the piece, you might not value the art the same way. No amount of code will change that.

Having said that, I think the current iteration of AI will be a fantastic tool for artists once it matures. Even if you're making some one-off disposable piece of visual/audio design for business purposes, you will want a professional to look it over.

dreen··on Why is there so much useless and unreliable software?
There is a lot more software now than there was in 1987. The percentage of bad software could be the same. Sturgeon's law etc...
dreen··on Toxic Exposure: The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials
Good to hear. I think its mostly wheat here, and I am positive there's been a significant bee dieoff. Again, not a professional farmer.
dreen··on Toxic Exposure: The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials
I am in EU, it was my mistake to shorten Eastern EU to EEU.

As to why not report this, sadly the systemic problems in this particular area are pretty deep. I'm not saying 'it won't do anything', but the results may be, at best, insignificant, and at worst quite bad for me.

What is needed is farmland consolidation. It's easier to control one big, invested farmer than 100 semi-literate drunks holding the same amount collectively, each working their tiny little 10 acre bit. Unfortunately it is a common populist policy to slow down or reverse this process, to "stop foreigners buying out our homeland" or something.

dreen··on Toxic Exposure: The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials
I am not a career farmer, nor a bee inspector. Are they all dead? Probably not. But I know some beekeepers in the area and all of theirs died, and I'm not seeing hives around while they used to be common. Also, you should know bees are not the only pollinators.
dreen··on Toxic Exposure: The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials
Sorry, I wasn't aware of Eurasian Economic Union. Makes sense. I'm in Eastern EU.
dreen··on Toxic Exposure: The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials
The damage is still being done. I am a non-producing farmer in EEU. I know for a fact many local farmers still use Roundup on crops, even though its illegal. There are no checks done when they sell the grain. All the bees in the area have already died.
dreen··on Mjolnir
Its not practical, but neither is building some weird car that does something cool but cant use actual roads
dreen··on The IAB loves tracking users but hates users tracking them
Depends on the videos, I think if you want someone to watch your 1080p@60fps without stutter like they do on youtube anywhere in the world you need edge architecture designed for video no? If so, I'd like to know the service which can do that for $5.
