dreamoffire··on Vx – One Language, Every Chip
Are you not biased having created another PL in a similar fashion?

This is collaboration in the same fashion as a group project in school. One kid never shows up or does any work and expects to put their name on it.

It’s hard to take you all seriously when your first instinct is to pop open an llm to even name your project. I mean c’mon that’s the funnest part!

“I’d like the best programming language! Look at what people like about Rust, Mojo and Zig and come up with specs for it!

Oh don’t forget we need to think of the future… Make sure we can run on GPUs.

Try not to sound too LLMy.

Don’t mess up.”

I wish you luck I guess

dreamoffire··on A high-throughput parser for the Zig programming language
The talks that Niles gave at the Utah Zig meetups (linked in the repo) were great, just wished the AV setup was a little smoother. There seemed like there some really neat visualizations that Niles prepared that flopped. Either way, I recommend it. Inspired me to read a lot more machine code these days.

Then your manager and skips question why everything moves so slowly in development time, you always repeat the same answers. You start to die a little inside from repeating yourself and they start to be suspicious because nothing changes.

Meanwhile the codebase takes 12 minutes to compile a 1 line change. Each time you compile you forget why you liked programming to begin with and you spiral into an abyss where you think the only solution is to quit and start a hobby farm.

Which year/trim of a truck are we talking about here specifically? I’d be interested in not refuelling for months of city driving.

Assuming we’re just talking about driving around for errands and not things you use a truck for, this would still be impressive.

dreamoffire··on I hate almost all software (2011)
I'm more amazed that the hardware industry has hoisted our shit software into usable state. Just bravo.

I can only imagine the people working on the actual chips are screaming in silence somewhere at the complete waste of energy we've made.

dreamoffire··on Ask HN: What's your unpopular tech, programming opinion
Don’t rewrite it.

Every time I hear someone wanting to rewrite something without a VERY solid reason is a flag for me. It is hard improving a system that’s already there, but can be super rewarding if you change your mindset.

Everyone is eager to go with a blank canvas and greenfield a project but ultimately we’ll end up with the same shit situation in 5-6 years after the original authors have bounced and the newer devs are side-eyeing the code.

dreamoffire··on Omega-3s: Are “Brain-Boosting” Effects Scientifically Backed?
Doesn't this sound like an inexperienced driver gaining more experience or was there little driving in between?
dreamoffire··on New Sony Walkman music player
If I’m reading the specs right it looks like their headphones are required. I’m guessing mic’s are on each side and offloaded to the player? Either way, I wouldn’t want to be forced to use their headphones.
dreamoffire··on Fish 3.6.0
The improvements to the abbreviations is a welcome change, should enable some “macro” like workflows. Excited to try it tonight.
dreamoffire··on Show HN: Embed a snow effect on your website
Working now, I didn't change anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
dreamoffire··on Show HN: Embed a snow effect on your website
Maybe I'm missing a button or something, but I'd expect there to be a snow effects demo on the page you linked

How are others supposed to know what Canadians use when Canadian don’t even know. Officially everything is metric. Unofficially, it’s a mess.
dreamoffire··on Fzf – a command-line fuzzy finder
Do you have a source for the faster claim? I read back when I was investigating that fzf was still faster despite the Go vs Rust performance debate.
