drdrek··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
Can't wait for the "AI Is supercharging SAAS" article when the stocks go up, and another "SAAS IS DEAD" when they go down again
drdrek··on Astrological CPU Scheduler
Bravo

drdrek··on The Agentic AI Handbook: Production-Ready Patterns
The word cost is mentioned only twice in the entire article, lol
drdrek··on Google broke my heart
There was never a better business than the internet tollbooth google had. The crawlers and search basically costed nothing and made billions in advertisements. Everything else was a desperate effort to use the huge amounts of money the money printer was spewing fast enough, So they had a lot of "fat" to do things that did not directly relate to the business.

Now with Youtube and AI its going to be great businesses, but not 99% profitability great. Nothing is 99% profitability great like search used to be.

You will see Google stock go up and down in the short term, but the fate is already sealed. Sooner or later they will be welcomed to the club of Intel and IBM.

drdrek··on Alchemy
Its the first player past the goal post problem, the first alchemist will crash the gold market but he will be insanely rich. You can see this with advertisers, when a new approach is found they all rush to it. They know its going to kill it soon, but the first few will get that sweet sweet revenue before the public catches on.

AI art will poison the well, but someone will make the few bucks that can be extracted before it happens.

drdrek··on Things that aren't doing the thing
Wow this article is an amazing rorschach test! Each defensive comment here is a person defending what he thinks this article is personally attacking him on!
drdrek··on This World of Ours (2014) [pdf]
The point about the lay person not needing massive parallelism was very true, until it was not :D
drdrek··on This World of Ours (2014) [pdf]
Actually Gaza and the West Bank are handled by the "Shabak" agency which is the equivalent of the FBI while the "Mossad" agency is only for foreign operations and is equivalent to the CIA

And asking how did they miss something is like asking how come AWS has downtime. But I'm sure you could come to this conclusion on your own if you didn't really want the answer to be something else.

drdrek··on Nightmare Fuel: Skibidi Toilet and the Monstrous Digital
Never underestimate the ability of smart people to be overconfident in their understanding of the world, even in fields they know very little about. This is how you get a lot of very articulate nonsense, news papers are filled with this and so are many small blogs.
drdrek··on Beginner Guide to VPS Hetzner and Coolify
Every step to improve raw hosting as an alternative to full cloud offering is a blessing.

Cloud pricing no longer makes any sense.

drdrek··on Comprehension debt: A ticking time bomb of LLM-generated code
Somehow many very smart AI entrepreneurs do not understand the concept of limits to lossless data compression. If an idea cannot be reduced further without losing information, no amount of AI is going to be able to compress it.

This is why you see so many failed startup around slack/email/jira efficiency. Half the time you do not know if you missed critical information so you need to go to the source, negating gains you had with information that was successfully summarized.

drdrek··on I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse
I Love this!
drdrek··on Charting Form Ds to roughly see the state of venture capital “fund” raising
Good, many bad companies will release good developers to work on more productive things. It's healthy for everyone.
drdrek··on When DEF CON partners with the U.S. Army
I think anti Fascist is way too narrow, it's anti establishment, any establishment period. Anything anyone with power does is bad, that's the mentality for 50 years.
drdrek··on Weathering Software Winter (2022)
Code as art or political movement always baffled me.

I guess anything can be a statement about the world, and we all want our lives to have meaning, so something you poured most of your waking hours into must mean something.

But as someone that sits by a computer for the better part of 30 years I just cant find beauty in it, just sadness for the human condition. Old hardware and software do not make me nostalgic, or makes me feel like we lost anything of value. It gives me the same feeling those abandoned listening posts in Chernobyl gave me, decay, the fleeting nature of existence.

You can't fight the fact that the world will keep on keeping on, with or without you. Be a person that matters to those around you, it's the best you are going to get.

drdrek··on An engineer's perspective on hiring
Have you ever integrated code a candidate wrote into a code base? Have you ever met anyone that have?

Ask yourself why not

drdrek··on The militarization of Silicon Valley
Military drones have a lot of cross pollination with civilian drones, each advance the other. Its inevitable and expected. I think that the fake separation of Military and Civilian technology facade is just ending, nothing really changed except the language of press releases.
drdrek··on Our $100M Series B
God why do startup sites suck so much? Why do I need ChatGPT to cut through the marketing speak to understand what they are actually selling? I literally spent 5 minutes in the site trying to understand before giving up and asking GPT...

Cool 1999 aesthetics though

drdrek··on Tell HN: I Lost Joy of Programming
Technology is about efficiency, and for people to adopt it you need to be 10x more efficient. LLMs took a 15 years process of burning out, and shortened it to 1.5 years.
drdrek··on A non-anthropomorphized view of LLMs
It's human to anthropomorphize, we also do it to our dishwasher when it acts up. The nefarious part is how tech CEOs weaponize bullshit doom scenarios to avoid talking about real regulatory problems by poisoning the discourse. What copyright law, privacy, monopoly? Who cares if we can talk about the machine apocalypse!!!
drdrek··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
Assume that if you thought about it its already too late. I've been to an AI SEO session by our VC. It was a guide on how to find chatbot primary sources for a keyword and then seeding that source with your content.

Advertisers and spammers have the highest possible incentive to subvert the system, so they will. Which is only one step worse (or better depending on your view) than letting a mega corp control all the flow of information absolutely.

Welcome to the new toll booth of the internet, now with 50% less access to the source material (WOW!), I hope you have a pleasant stay.

drdrek··on Red Programming Language
Even DSLs of huge and successful projects are more often than not bad. As a rule if you think that you can create a better query language than SQL, please spare us. JQL, Elastic Query DSL, KQL... Don't.
drdrek··on Game theory illustrated by an animated cartoon game
One of the things I take is that if you keep the game the same but turn the punishment for both cheating really high cooperation blossoms even with high degree of miscommunication. Bring back hanging and quartering for petty crimes!

In all seriousness Game Theory fails in reality because it cannot account for the players changing the game.

drdrek··on Ask HN: Do people actually pay for small web tools?
I pay for a small wiki like site for my D&D campaigns.

Yeah I can fiddle with self hosting and finding the right OSS tools, but really, I just don't want to think about it. Its a small fee and I'll happily pay it.

drdrek··on In 2025, venture capital can't pretend everything is fine any more
Market are efficient-ish which is probably as good as it gets, if your framework cant account for dishonesty its not a very useful tool to analyze human endeavors
drdrek··on In 2025, venture capital can't pretend everything is fine any more
I've got AI fatigue as the next guy, but this is over correcting.

VC money is in a constant state of FOMO, this is nothing new. Companies dress up as AI, or web3 or web2, or fintech or what ever to more easily attract capital. If 57.9% of dollars went to AI startups this year is not because everything is AI, I would bet 25% are just companies that tacked AI on to an unrelated business model and its skewing the statistics. I'll promise you that 10 years from now 57.9% of VC funding is going to be in some other buzzword and its not going to be AI.

drdrek··on US vs. Google amicus curiae brief of Y Combinator in support of plaintiffs [pdf]
Do you think its a coincidence that companies start getting regulated when they are at the end of their rope? I think its the other way around. When Google started to lose power, when alternatives started to pour money into the political system, when jobs and money from alternatives presented themselves, then the wheels of justice began turning. The regulation is caused by googles apparent decline.
drdrek··on Waiting for Postgres 18: Accelerating Disk Reads with Asynchronous I/O
Postgres is such a cool project, I have so much respect for its maintainers and community! For me its the second most impactful OSS project in the business tech world behind Linux itself. A real public good to be cherished and praised.
drdrek··on Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model
