Energy use for its own sake is not progress; efficiency and technological results which are measured elsewhere are.
drchickensalad··on Show HN: We open sourced our new Mac developer setup script
Why?
drchickensalad··on A terrible schema from a clueless programmer
I have no idea how you came to this conclusion, but indices on datetime fields are completely required to bring down the seek time from O(n) to O(log(N)), plus the length of the range. Massive parts of the businesses I've worked at would be simply impossible without this.

The cardinality of the index has other ramifications that aren't generally important here.

Star wars was inspired by dune
drchickensalad··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
You just store multiple hashes, and don't support it retroactively
drchickensalad··on Making bracket pair colorization faster
Yeah there's definitely some YMMV. An efficient baseline does continuously yield performance benefits, even if inefficiencies are layered on top.
drchickensalad··on Firefox 90 supports Fetch Metadata Request Headers
Safari truly is IE in 2021
drchickensalad··on HK media erase their archives amid rising arrests
We have a system where you get a large performance benefit from doing the tactics mentioned above.

Therefore, the system will always be moving towards more consistently acting that way. It's not right or wrong driving much of anything, just survival.

If this is bad, the incentives must be changed; you can't just wish people were nicer, cause even if you got your wish magically, they'd still lose to those that aren't

drchickensalad··on Mitochondria may contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders: research
Except it's not ad infinitum. It's ad constant, where constant is sufficiently frustrating for a few generations. Technology always gets there
drchickensalad··on Show HN: I open sourced a game I just released on Steam, written in Lua
I will buy every game you release :)
drchickensalad··on Show HN: I open sourced a game I just released on Steam, written in Lua
I wish there was a steam tag people used but I think it's too niche lol.

Here's the ones I've found on steam - Nova Drift - SNKRX - BYTEPATH

Back in the day I played so many flash games like this, but unfortunately it didn't seem to spawn as much of a genre lol.

There's a sort of mini genre of build simulators stapled on to a simple shell game (which the OP is one of the main contributors to). It works well because the controls are simple, the mechanics that builds tie in to are simple to grasp, and it takes way less dev effort.

For this specific game, snake works super well because it's very inspired by auto battlers, so different units as segmentd doing their thing and being killed individually works very well with snake.

drchickensalad··on U.S. approves solar project in California desert

drchickensalad··on Git as a NoSql Database (2016)
Assuming by number you mean epoch seconds/milliseconds, a number can store the instant in time, but not a TIMEZONE. Obviously you could do bit magic if you shift it over (so you don't mess up sorting), but that's true for any data and a sufficiently large number type.
drchickensalad··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
I feel you, friend. I've had every single experience you have. Although, I've burned out a bit on online gaming. I really just need to see my friends again to refuel my energy...
drchickensalad··on Speed of Rust vs. C
Errors are up to interpretation. It just means the thing didn't happen as requested. Errors are meant to be expected or not expected depending on the context.

Dangerous means dangerous. It's not up for interpretation.

Languages have multiple, very different words, for exactly this reason.

drchickensalad··on Breaking the warp barrier for faster-than-light travel
You move at a constant vector, the speed of light, through both space and time. Since you go from basically 0 magnitude in space (anything us humans do on earth) to approaching the speed of light, that robs direction from the time magnitude. Therefore, going that quickly means you experience substantially less time. Taken to the extreme, when you move at the speed of light, you experience no time; you would simply from a human perspective teleport to the place where you start decelerating (given that's possible lol).
drchickensalad··on Fusion startup plans reactor with small but powerful superconducting magnets
That's why fusion is so cool. We're making something that runs a higher temperature than the sun's core. It's not even strong enough for us! We can't rely on that super slow quantum tunneling fusion; we're gonna make stronger yet thinner stars at home and literally suspend it in extremely limited space.
drchickensalad··on Humanlike thumb dexterity may date back as far as 2M years ago
This is actually a really enlightening example. Everyone thinks about throwing to kill, but what about throwing to not die? It's so novel when another animal has it happen to them; they wtf out of there. Could vastly increase our survival rate.

drchickensalad··on The Future of RTS
In my experience modding every popular game to death, the most beloved and generally popular overhaul mods make the game significantly harder or more complex.

Factorio: Bob's mods, Angel's mods

Minecraft: Literally every tech mod, most magic

Skyrim: Requiem

Fallout 4: Horizon

drchickensalad··on Video game lets you do nothing in particular in a suburban Russian tower block
Check out caves of qud for some similar amazing changelogs (and probably one of the best rogue style games ever)

Check out ripgrep, bat, exa, fd; or just google top rust cli's etc. They are so, so good.
drchickensalad··on 1M Cell Minesweeper

drchickensalad··on CEO of Cyber Fraud Startup NS8 Arrested by FBI, Facing Fraud Charges
Yeah I saw them super active on triplebyte and angel.co a-list. I got pretty far into the interview; lucky I dodged a huge bullet!
drchickensalad··on Statement Regarding the Zen Programming Language
Almost all of those you're forced to use because there's no/little competition that runs on the hardware, or it's an alternative compiler for a popular language (piggybacking on what OP described)
drchickensalad··on URL query parameters and how laxness creates de facto requirements on the web
I had an edge case with an authentication server (think okta) wrapped around a school login system. In occasional cases, with certain clients of the server doing a couple redirects of their own, we'd hit that 20 cap. It's not any individual system being irresponsible, just reusing other systems as they're meant to be. It's kind of like saying having a call stack depth of 50 in software is never acceptable.
