drchaim··on Migrating from AWS to Hetzner
I dream of the day when I can have my servers at home with solar power and batteries. I still have a ways to go, but it will come.
drchaim··on Vibe engineering
I’d just call it “coding” – it’ll be the default soon enough. For the old way: “hand-coding”
drchaim··on Show HN: Arc – high-throughput time-series warehouse with DuckDB analytics
Sounds interesting, just some questions: - tables are partitioned? By year/month? - how do you handle too many small parquet files? - are updated/deleted allowed/planned?
drchaim··on R2 SQL: a deep dive into our new distributed query engine
It shows promise and is still in open beta, but it's missing many essential features (like aggregations, filters, etc.) to be truly useful.
drchaim··on Optimizing ClickHouse for Intel's ultra-high core count processors
it seems they have tested it: https://github.com/ClickHouse/ClickHouse/issues/34157
drchaim··on How to install TrueNAS on a Raspberry Pi
I was in the same boat - QNAP OS was a complete mess. Ended up nuking it and throwing Ubuntu on there instead. Nothing fancy, just basic config, but it actually works now. Other option is pay Unraid.
drchaim··on Nginx introduces native support for ACME protocol
I’ve already migrated to caddy ;)
drchaim··on Ask HN: How do I give back to people helped me when I was young and had nothing?
Just call them, invite them to a drink/dinner and tell them what you fell. You'll make their day.
drchaim··on Ask HN: Do people actually pay for small web tools?
Things I’ve paid over the last 15 years.

- Plex lifetime

- gmail workspace (was free lots of years, but not now) - domain(s)

- some Wordpress themes in the past for business clients

Nothing more, and I’d like to get out of workspace…

But internet is gigantic, just ship it.

drchaim··on New open-source benchmark for real-time analytics applications
I was thinking about giving it a try until I read:

“Update, delete, and foreign keys are currently unsupported on columnar tables. “

drchaim··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for PEPPOL?
I was thinking about how governments could, if they have invested in good and simple tech, being the API suppliers (free) and an interface (paid). They “should” know the rules, let me fill some boxes and the invoice is sent to the client and to the gov. The overloaded market of acc software disrupted by gov? Let me dream ;)
drchaim··on Show HN: A Better Log Service
Don't tell me why, but I've developed an instinct that recognizes solutions that use Clickhouse under the hood :)
drchaim··on Litestack: All your data infrastructure, in one Ruby gem
also interested!
drchaim··on Show HN: I built an open-source data pipeline tool in Go
"Interesting, congrats! I've felt the same challenges but ended up using custom Python with dbt and DuckDB. I'll take a look!"
drchaim··on Show HN: Vince – A self hosted alternative to Google Analytics
this is great, congrats!
drchaim··on uMap Project
you are serving Django with Debug=True https://umap.openstreetmap.de/es/map/mapa-sin-12334#10/41.58...
drchaim··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (June 2024)
SEEKING WORK | SPAIN | REMOTE

I am a 15+ year experienced developer.

I am highly skilled at the intersection of Python, Data, and Web development.

Skills: Django, FastAPI, htmx, jQuery, a bit of React, PostgreSQL, DuckDB, ClickHouse, Pandas, Ansible, Nginx, Linux, Docker

I am open to part-time or full-time contract work, with a preference for long-term engagements, though I can begin with short-term projects. My goal is to cultivate lasting business relationships through each project

drchaim··on Pydantic Logfire
The ideal business model (from a user's point of view) for successful libraries like Pydantic, Ruff, etc., is like a foundation or sponsoring. But (almost) nobody pays for them (me included), so their creators have raised VC money, citing: 'We have xxM users and yyyyyM downloads per month.' Not to blame library authors here, they are trying their thing, which is indeed admirable. It's just that open source is difficult to sustain. Wishing them all the best
drchaim··on Writing and linting Python at scale
I dream with a unique tool that makes all formatting and linting and sorting and whatever. I don't care too much of the final style. I just prefer not to think too much about it. Ruff is close, let's see.
drchaim··on Show HN: HyperDX – open-source dev-friendly Datadog alternative
the idea of different features oss vs cloud has sense, but please, support email in oss, it's easy and makes the platform usable.
drchaim··on Show HN: HyperDX – open-source dev-friendly Datadog alternative
another Clickhouse wrapper :)
drchaim··on Show HN: We’re open-sourcing our session replay tool
Yes, I know it's awesome. I predicted 4 o 5 years ago that all analytics SaaS with certain scale will migrate to CH. Sentry, plausible and many others has already switched. In the other hand, I've been trying for the same yeras to incorporate it at (Corporate Work) to replace ElasticSearch with not success (because Managers...)
drchaim··on Show HN: We’re open-sourcing our session replay tool
hey, look, another analytics SaaS based on ClickHouse ! :)
drchaim··on Ask HN: Why are toggle switches replacing checkboxes? Isn't on/off less obvious?
also me, I always double check. when there is no label: On/Off is even worst.
drchaim··on Python 3.11 Delivers
Initial tests in a medium size codebase shows a 15% speed improvement, both in speed and some platform benchmarks. which is great. kudos to the team working on this.
drchaim··on Tesla FSD data is getting worse, according to beta tester self-reports
Can please some manufacturer make an EV without being a connected vehicle? I want to replace my combustion car with an electric one, not a "trying to be smart and connected vehicle".
drchaim··on Hydra – the fastest Postgres for analytics [benchmarks]
Congrats for the launch!

As I’ve anticipated, clickbench will become the defacto analytics benchmark, which is great.

Something to improve IMHO it’s documentation regarding Cloud and Open Source. Is somehow mixed (the same happen in ClickHouse docs)

As a Postgres user I would like to see: how can I install this extension in my current Database? How to migrate to new tables.

Timescale makes a really great job in this case.

Anyway, as I’ve said. Congrats and good luck!

drchaim··on It’s time to leave the leap second in the past
I would like to understand all of this. :)
drchaim··on An SPA Alternative
I've been trying htmx and the results are great. So much simpler to code than with SPA. My only concern is about those datetime pickers and other type of "components" that is easy to get from a react/vue ecosystem but much harder in a vanilla Javascript way. Not saying it's impossible, but a bit harder to find decent maintain libraries/components for those kind of web interactions.
drchaim··on Show HN: A benchmark for analytical databases (Snowflake, Druid, Redshift)
it's curious there is no available c6a.metal today in eu-west-2, I would say last week there were available in this region.
