dpearce··on Why the Bootstrap 3 Grid Works (2013)
Any content should always be in a container. The 15px margin keeps the content from laying against the side of the browser. If you want to do a fullscreen background or image or something then you don't need the container.

dpearce··on How we did over $1K in profit during Startup Weekend
You're still missing the point. It was an exercise, or a "challenge" as the author states. The point of the post is that sales are hard, and awkward, but very possible if you focus on it. If you can sell jerky, you can sell anything. That's the point. Forget the jerky business, it's just an example of what happened to prove what people can do when they put the work in.
dpearce··on How we did over $1K in profit during Startup Weekend
You guys are right in that the total profit was probably nil for the weekend (but that doesn't sound cool). However, you're not considering this is a subscription service. The idea is that the work put in initially returns revenue every month indefinitely. If the work this month returned $1K, then the same amount of work next month should return $2K, etc.

That's how most monthly services work. It takes a lot of work up front to make a product successful. You will almost always in fact be working for almost nothing when you start a company like this. That's why people raise money. But that initial work returns exponential value in the long term.

So yes, if you want to attack something you can attack the $1K in profit, go for it. But you're missing the point. The point is that making money takes work, and if you put in the work, you can make money doing anything. Like selling Jerky. Imagine if you actually have a good idea.

dpearce··on The Lean Trap: Why You Still Don’t Have 10,000 Users
I plan on writing a follow up post with details and ideas on how to acquire users. I'd just say think outside the box. Particularly when it comes to writing. Don't just write for your own blog. Guest post with quality, useful content for other blogs (with readers). Also, always reference your product but you don't have to write directly about it.

dpearce··on I like Meteor.js because I'm lazy
We (http://differential.io) have been using Meteor.js almost exclusively since switching from rails about 5 or 6 months ago and are very excited about where the framework is headed.

Obviously, it's still new and has some kinks but 1.0 is around the corner, and we've found the ease of development is well worth the few issues we've had to work around.

Thanks for the feedback, we definitely want to make calendar integration a feature.

I think we might have some bad UX here, you can actually propose multiple times in the wizard (as a creator). We allow other people to propose a time in case none of the original times work for them. We just deployed some stuff that will hopefully make this more clear.

Built on Meteor. We're still really early so would love any feedback/bug reports.

Looks great but I'm having issues with it in Chrome. Only the text will update. Nothing else changes and when I click to get the code the new page just says "Loading the code..."

Great answer, thanks.
dpearce··on Facebook buys Karma
Big time pick up for Facebook. If they can manage to bring Facebook Credits mainstream then everyone watch out.
dpearce··on Why I’m betting my retirement on Facebook stock today
1/4 of Google's revenue is a pretty big deal. The author is suggesting that's the worst case scenario for Facebook, that they take over that $10B in revenue from Google. Add that to whatever they can do with Facebook Credits (with acquisitions like Karma), and their future looks bright.
