dpau··on Having trouble with the IRS site? Try all caps
I tried to change my address today on https://moversguide.usps.com

In the address form, there is a field for PO Box. It is labeled "PO Box". One would assume you should type your PO Box number in this field, e.g. "1234". That is incorrect. You must enter the entire string "PO Box 1234". In a field that is already labeled "PO Box"

dpau··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
And measures were not limited to Wuhan. By the time restrictions were lifted in Wuhan, the Chinese government had implemented quarantines, surveillance, contact tracing and testing procedures throughout the entire country. While here in the US we have a hodge-podge of approaches from each state with varying success, and no restriction of movement. Not saying we should adopt authoritarian policies, but we'll only have the virus under control when every US state has it under control.
dpau··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
> Particularly in a place like San Francisco, where there have been 1,400 cases total and 23 deaths. It’s simply irrational now, and a lot closer to virtue signaling than anything with a scientific basis.

I live in a state with a very low number of cases and deaths, much less than SF. We began the process of reopening today. Which would be fine if our borders were sealed, if quarantine for travelers was enforced, if our systems for contact tracing and testing were adequate. However, none of these requirements have been met. It is only a matter of time before this state, which relies heavily on tourism, sees a rebound of cases and we are once back in the situation we were in a month ago.

dpau··on Seattle’s leaders let scientists take the lead, New York’s did not
The 99% of us who are losing our jobs and eating through our savings shouldn't be forced into a moral dilemma of working to remain solvent vs. quarantine/distancing to protect others. This is entirely a failure of government to quickly and effectively manage the pandemic with country-wide health measures as well as adequate economic support, especially for the most vulnerable. A check for $1200 is an insult.
dpau··on In 4 US state prisons, 3,300 inmates test positive, 96% without symptoms
also need to take into account the decline in deaths from other factors due to quarantines, social distancing, and improved hygiene. less driving, less spread of other infectious diseases, etc.
dpau··on Show HN: Enviro.Work – Find and fill jobs that benefit the environment
websites like this can only do their best to collect links to resources, it's beyond scope for them to perform a detailed environmental analysis of each listing. obviously you'll still need to make your own decisions based on what you believe is worth pursuing.
dpau··on A Side Effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic? Reading Got a Lot Harder
It's been noted that the pandemic has caused a dip in streaming audio and podcast traffic, those moments of time when we are "busy but free" during commutes turn out to be valuable slivers of time in which we catch up and enjoy all that content. Lately I've been making up chores for myself just so I can have an excuse to play my audiobooks..
dpau··on GitHub is degraded/down
got my push to go through, unfortunately downloading packages from https://codeload.github.com was timing out
dpau··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
and 22 million unemployed
dpau··on Ask HN: Are There Any Virtual Gym / Online Workout Startups?
my favorite for years has been https://www.fitnessblender.com/
dpau··on There will be no 'back to normal'
I hate to be that person, but I find the use of an accordion collapse for the article sections to be unnecessary and exasperating. I tried a page search for "automation" and the browser showed one hit, but I couldn't find where the word was due to the collapse feature. What does hiding text with an accordion add to the experience? Why not just publish a full article? Ugh.
dpau··on Workstream: A fast virtual computer you can use for anything
Thanks for this link, I've been going by the estimated cost on the Google Cloud VM deployment page which seems to give significantly lower prices than your link. With GC I always seem to end up paying a lot more than I planned to...
dpau··on Workstream: A fast virtual computer you can use for anything
I'd like to see a cost comparison across different providers. A comparable v100 machine on Google Cloud is $2.015/hr, while Paperspace seems to charge 2.30/hr for a dedicated v100 (https://www.paperspace.com/pricing)
dpau··on China to ban online gaming, in-game chat with foreigners outside Great Firewall
I'm against this tendency to alienate the Chinese as some unknowable "other". Yes, the culture is quite different than in the West, but we share vastly more through the common experience of being human. There are a lot of well-educated middle class Chinese who would hope for a more transparent and democratic system. But it is a complex and difficult issue. There are many of us in the US who hope for a similar change in our own country, and yet there doesn't seem like there's much we can do. Except vote, of course.
dpau··on Wildlife collapse from climate change is predicted to hit suddenly and sooner
It's not whether or not individual members of a species can survive if it's a little hotter. The problem is that climate change is destroying entire ecosystems in which these individuals exist. A polar bear can do ok in a zoo in San Diego, but polar bears will go extinct once their habitat in the Arctic disappears.
dpau··on Saul Steinberg celebrated the home as a ‘cocoon for creativity’
Saul elevated cartoons to Art without sacrificing wit or humor.. Archive.org throught their NEL has some of his works, among them perhaps my favorite:

The Labyrinth https://archive.org/details/steinberg0000unse

dpau··on Ask HN: In the current crisis is starting freelancing doable?
personally on upwork i have noticed a decrease in "good" job postings and an increase in proposals. anecdotal. but i think it's a mistake to assume that any business has not been fundamentally affected by covid in some way.
dpau··on William Gibson says today’s internet is nothing like what he envisioned
that is exactly what those of us simply waiting for a Neuromancer movie have been saying to ourselves for years :(
dpau··on Foxconn’s buildings in Wisconsin are still empty, one year later
Not surprising. A great episode about this issue is on Reply All, worth listening to even now:

#132 Negative Mount Pleasant DECEMBER 6, 2018 A small town in Wisconsin becomes the site of a completely unprecedented experiment. https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/wbhjwd

dpau··on The World’s Great Photographers, Many Stuck Inside, Have Snapped
even the "full" sized images are filled with compression artifacts and lose lots of quality after upload, not as badly as in facebook but still surprising and disappointing for a photo-centric app. i've tried a number of things to improve final quality but nothing worked well. if anyone has tips please share them!
dpau··on Don DeLillo deserves the Nobel
ha! but maybe not too surprising given the origin of the word googol
dpau··on Boeing 787s must be turned off and on every 51 days to prevent 'misleading data'
there was also a conjecture that the dreamliner required rebooting every 248 days due to a similar issue

dpau··on Don DeLillo deserves the Nobel
The protagonist hears his daughter talking in her sleep:

She uttered two clearly audible words, familiar and elusive at the same time, words that seemed to have ritual meaning, part of a verbal spell or ecstatic chant.

Toyota Celica

A long moment passed before I realized this was the name of an automobile. The truth only amazed me more.

dpau··on Don DeLillo deserves the Nobel
There is no better time to read DeLillo's "White Noise" and learn about "The Airborne Toxic Event".
dpau··on Ask HN: I lost my job
a lot of people are losing their jobs, my wife lost her job and i'm furloughed. but the skills that made you and i so valuable before still make us valuable now and in the future. so i do think we are lucky, despite everything. things will get better!
dpau··on Ask HN: I lost my job
While I totally agree with your last paragraph, just keep in mind that most of those in HN are still really lucky, even if layed-off. Getting angry after only job-hunting for three days seems a little over the top. There are a lot of unemployed service workers who won't be able to afford food or rent, and others who are forced to work in dangerous conditions without PPE. And then there are the nurses and doctors at the front line....
dpau··on Quarantine Bread
I highly recommend just reading the book "Flour Water Salt Yeast", which is where this recipe comes from: https://kensartisan.com/flour-water-salt-yeast
dpau··on How Much Toilet Paper? – The Coronavirus Toilet Paper Calculator
in addition to https://staythefuckhome.com there needs to be a https://justwashyourass.com EDIT: damn already registered :(
dpau··on A Movement to Stop the Covid-19 Pandemic
as an example, two weeks ago i made sure i had enough supplies to last a month. started taking precautions. social distancing, hand washing, etc. doing the best i can. then co-worker takes a coronavirus vacation due to discounted tickets. others are driving in from around the country for spring break. i've done all i can, but it's almost meaningless because others don't understand the risk and the government hasn't taken steps to limit movement and test.
dpau··on A Movement to Stop the Covid-19 Pandemic
it reminds me of climate change, pushing blame onto individuals while corporations and governments continue business as usual. sure, recycle that bottle. quarantine yourself. but in the grand scheme of things it makes very little difference compared to if corporations and governments took the actions necessary.
