dpatterbee··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
I'm confused, the incident is that he wrote a document detailing repeated bad behaviour from a well known community figure? And this is a bad thing?

And that second link is really grasping at straws lol

dpatterbee··on State of Terminal Emulators in 2025: The Errant Champions
It's planned for 1.3 in March https://ghostty.org/docs/install/release-notes/1-2-0#roadmap
dpatterbee··on Can you use GDPR to circumvent BlueSky's adult content blocks?
My understanding is that Bluesky is a service built on top of a decentralized protocol, ATProto. This allows users to use alternative hosts for their data instead of the bluesky servers, but if you're using Bluesky then they still hold your data.

I also think the private DMs might be hosted externally to ATProto because that is all meant to be public information or something.

I would assume that the age verification is built at the app layer, so you could use an alternative app (I think they call them AppViews?) to get around the age verification thing. Don't know if alternatives really exist today though, there are probably some.

dpatterbee··on Zig feels more practical than Rust for real-world CLI tools
So Ghostty was first publicly released on I think December 27th last year, then 1.0.1, 1.1.0, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2 were released within the next month and a half to fix bugs found by the large influx of users, and there hasn't been a segfault reported since. I would recommend that users who are finding a large number of segfaults should probably report it to the maintainers.
dpatterbee··on Zig feels more practical than Rust for real-world CLI tools
I've had at least one instance of Ghostty running on both my work and personal machine continuously since I first got access to the beta last November, and I haven't seen a single segfault in that entire time. When have you seen them?
dpatterbee··on The Ruby community has a DHH problem

They literally just read his blog.

dpatterbee··on Show HN: Zedis – A Redis clone I'm writing in Zig
Is software not real software if it's written by a billionaire? What is it about the bug mascot that detracts from the database's legitimacy?
dpatterbee··on Claude Code: Now in Beta in Zed
This seems obviously untrue. https://zed.dev/extensions
dpatterbee··on Why LLMs can't really build software
Heck, replace "AI" with almost any noun and you can close your eyes to any and all criticism!
dpatterbee··on Faster substring search with SIMD in Zig
Zig has no type info at runtime so this is and always will be guaranteed to be a comptime check.
dpatterbee··on Helix Editor 25.07
Honestly, I don't think this is a big deal. I use helix as my primary editor, but when I'm on another machine and it only has vi or whatever I just use that and I can mentally switch to using the vim keybinds with little issue. Like sometimes I'll mistakenly `m-i-w-c` instead of `c-i-w` or `d` instead of `x`, but then I just hit `u` and continue.
dpatterbee··on Finland Bans Smartphones in Schools
You're definitely wrong because I learned lots in school but university was completely useless.
dpatterbee··on Middle-aged man trading cards go viral in rural Japan town
This sounds like a personal issue you have with your own mother that you are desperately trying to extrapolate onto the rest of society. Taking one selfish woman and using it to demonise all women and even the concept of feminism is quite silly.

> Much of backlash towards feminism is self-inflicted.

Self-inflicted by non-feminists?

> We don't need hateful men to tell us what to think about female priviledge.

But you're going to do it anyway.

dpatterbee··on The Steam Deck is software-freedom friendly
Microsoft used its influence over OEMs to stifle their competition in the browser market. This blog post is about how Valve are very much not doing that.
dpatterbee··on The Steam Deck is software-freedom friendly
Steam isn't really a monopoly though, everyone is free to use whatever marketplace they choose on PC. Steam's just the best one.
dpatterbee··on Fogus: Things and Stuff of 2024

dpatterbee··on Understanding the Odin Programming Language
There's no community in the world that isn't political. Perhaps the issue is actually just that you disagree with the politics that are popular there?
dpatterbee··on The future of software is Nix
As a response to (ii), I assure you that things are most certainly not moving very fast with experimental stuff like flakes. Flakes were first released as "experimental" almost 3 years ago and have been stuck in feature purgatory ever since.
dpatterbee··on Putting a full power search engine in Ecto
If you copy and paste that triangle you will get "|>".
dpatterbee··on Fast B-Trees
The title of the article is "Smolderingly fast b-trees". Smoldering is (sorta) an antonym of blazing. Blazingly fast means very fast, smolderingly fast would therefore mean not very fast.
dpatterbee··on TSMC execs allegedly dismissed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as 'podcasting bro'
The damage is done by these systems long before any courts get involved.
dpatterbee··on Fair: A Go library for serving resources fairly
Thank you for the explanation, I hadn't clocked the difference between fair allocation for tasks and fair allocation for users.
dpatterbee··on Fair: A Go library for serving resources fairly
Isn't the exactly the problem that preemptive multitasking is built for? For example any program built on the BEAM[1] wouldn't have this problem presumably. Do most languages not have a standard solution for this?

dpatterbee··on Age is a simple, modern and secure file encryption tool, format, and Go library
> trusts this specless tool will be maintained forever

As per the third sentence of the readme there indeed is a spec[0]. There is also an alternative implementation in the form of rage[1], as well as numerous others listed on the awesome-age page[2].

dpatterbee··on Fast, Declarative, Reproduble and Composable Developer Environments Using Nix
There are a fair few nix based dev environment systems (devenv, devshell, devbox) and I've tried out a few, but devenv is the one I've stuck with. I don't typically have complicated dev environments, I just use it for installing packages and adding convenience scripts which will automatically be activated and deactivated with direnv.
dpatterbee··on Serverless Horrors
I think on a $5 vps that you're using to host a small website you simply just don't do those things.
dpatterbee··on Show HN: filippo.io/mlkem768 – Post-Quantum Cryptography for the Go Ecosystem
I wouldn't describe age as having stagnated, it's simply stable. It has a well defined spec which it fully implements (seemingly correctly), so there isn't any need for more recent releases.

Also I think it's a bit sly to not mention that you're the creator of the alternative you suggest.

dpatterbee··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Epic failed.
dpatterbee··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
Okay you've run into problems but it's probably worth noting that this is not typical. Most people rave about the "a" line of pixel phones and they definitely last longer than 3 months before completely malfunctioning like yours is.

I'm not sure how easy it is to repair but I'd be shocked if you're not still within your warranty period and you couldn't get a replacement for your clearly defective device.

dpatterbee··on When a website erases your text you can use this trick to recover it
Pretty cool, I remember seeing Marcan toot about this trick a number of months ago. https://social.treehouse.systems/@marcan/109918006697541955
