Isn't this stealing resources from the owner without their permission?

Just like the person that sued a company for sending them unsolicited facsimile, claiming they used his electricity and paper without permission - thereby stealing a resources and wasting them.

This is where the "opt-out" idea flipped to "opt-in" in the UK and elsewhere.

Although, if you've blindly opted-in then more fool you - but surely this behavior is an obvious "opt-in" not an "opt-out" scenario.

dp-hackernews··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
It males sense if you consider the volume/weight/quantity values and compare them to the basic requirements for life - rather than what the psych wants, which is often overindulgent due to the other non-animal based type of nutrition(?) being consumed.

I wonder what the Inuit use as a natural source of fiber.

dp-hackernews··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
All protein derived from veggies are considered incomplete when compared to animal derived protein, which also require substantially more volume to obtain the same nutritional content.

You only need to look at the amount of waste (feces) between a veggie based diet and an animal based diet - the difference is staggeringly different.

I.e. far less waste is produced, because far less is required when eating animal based foods.

dp-hackernews··on One liter of bottled water found to contain 240k plastic fragments
Water evaporates at temperatures above its freezing point, so distillation will separate the water by way of evaporation. I think heating to produce steam just speeds up that process.

Plastics can potentially leech into other materials they come into contact with, so I'm not 100% certain they would not chemically combine with water and be distilled with the water.

I suspect some sort of substance could be used to bind to or otherwise attract those chemicals from the plastics could be used to allow only water to evaporate. Charcoal etc perhaps?

dp-hackernews··on One liter of bottled water found to contain 240k plastic fragments
A comparison with municipal water should have been done alongside.

"Next, the researchers plan to look beyond bottled water to other potential sources of nanoplastics, including tap water."

Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

I imagine the results will be of no surprise to anyone - both sources contain an unacceptable level of some form of plastics.

Additionally, perhaps prompting better processing of all water source used for drinking, and potentially kill bottled water, or at the very least significantly reduce the cost of it - unless the industry manages to find some new spin for bottled water to justify its price and stay in the game.

dp-hackernews··on Why Are More Boys Than Girls Retarded in School? (1928)
I suspect things have changed somewhat since 1928, but it likely boils down to something quite normal, like, boys are interested in different things to women. Which is surely just an evolutionary thing.

Its also likely to be a direct reflection, back then, of the expectations of that era.

The social construct is such an abstract nonexistent idea that many think is the way it should be, but it that just because we have the ability to reason etc...

Look at where we are holistically, are we really better off today if you look at every comparable data point across time?

dp-hackernews··on Cloudflare Termination Video: A Master Class in How Not to Terminate Someone
In her own words, and seems like its the way the company works, she had a 3 month ramp - which I presume is along the lines of training, mentoring, pairing, learning the ropes by example etc - and then let lose to get stuck in, which as she says has been only one month that overlaped a holiday period.

It sure seems like Cloudflare are just culling staff to me, or her manager has no managerial abilities and doesn't know how to give genuinely useful feedback.

If it was her performance that was in question, there would be a trail, maybe even a car crash worth of evidence to back up that claim.

I don't think she will have issues finding work, unless having high standards, conducting yourself in a professional manner, and fighting for yourself and for your peers are considered a bad things.

I think Richard Branson (Virgin) once said, "Treat your staff how you would like them to treat your best customer." - unfortunatrly that doesn't appear to be the mantra at Cloudflare.

dp-hackernews··on Hydroxychloroquine use during Covid pandemic may have induced 17,000 deaths
That are classified as restricted... marijuana isn't so restricted these days, but that used to be "considered" illegal at one time.

When will cigars, cigarettes, and alcohol be made illegal? - they're certainly not good for your health, and the evidence is everywhere.

dp-hackernews··on Hydroxychloroquine use during Covid pandemic may have induced 17,000 deaths
"May" - is far too vague in my opinion, and seems to suggest an incomplete argument

Unless these people were otherwise healthy individuals you have no useful correlation, other than outcome, to support the aleged causation - but that's just my opinion. :-)

dp-hackernews··on Ask HN: What are some good strategies to get students to attempt assignments?
I suspect students and employees, would be more inclined to do their assignments if those assigning the work had read, understood, and then implemented, some of the ideas proposed in Drive by Daniel H. Pink, and No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings & Erin Meyer. :-)
