downWidOutaFite··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
I was in the market for a small electric city car and found out that we're not allowed to have small cars in the US. Europe and Asia have really nice small city cars under 2,000lbs but none of them are available here. I believe the smallest car sold in the US is the Mini Cooper around 3,000lbs. I actually ended up with a souped up street legal golf cart and it's worked out well for my purposes of picking up kids and groceries within a 5 mile radius, though I'm in the Bay Area where the weather is not too extreme most of the year. I'm not sure why this market is neglected.
downWidOutaFite··on Plastic bag found at the bottom of world’s deepest ocean trench
Scientists have found plastic in rain water, in clouds, in the most remote wilderness, in underground caves, highest mountains, deepest trenches. We've permanently covered every inch of our little planet with plastic.

> That would basically ban normal cell phones. You can't do calls without access to the network.

Cell phones use globally standardized, government regulated network protocols with many providers. Not a private, locked down, super-duper encrypted, single provider SAAS.

I think the legislation should be that if you shut down a device's backend you must open up the protocol so someone else can implement it.

That makes way more sense than english's weird use of the latin e.g. for exempli gratia. And now I learn the actual romance languages don't even use it.
downWidOutaFite··on Snap shutters its enterprise services division after less than a year
Are you saying that central bank interest rate is targeted to be 2%? If so, I don't believe that is true. The target is 2% inflation and full employment, the interest rate is adjusted to whatever level achieves those goals.
downWidOutaFite··on DarkBeam leaks billions of email and password combinations
Not sure what your point is about non-reported, but that's still previously leaked data. It probably means stuff found in the dark webs.
downWidOutaFite··on DarkBeam leaks billions of email and password combinations
No evidence is presented that anybody but the security researcher noticed the unprotected data. The data is a compilation of previously leaked emails.

Luckily I haven't read any of that debate so any adhominems don't apply to me. I've come up with these worries all on my own after the realization that GPT-4 does a better job than me at a lot of my tasks, including setting my priorities and schedules. At some point I fully expect the roles of master and slave to flip.

Revenge of the nerd haters
downWidOutaFite··on Mistral 7B
All kinds of things. Personally, in the medium term I'm concerned about massive loss of jobs and the collapse of the current social order consensus. In the longer term, the implications of human brains becoming worthless compared to superior machine brains.

That is not what the "AI safety ninnies" are worried about. The "AI safety ninnies" aren't all corporate lobbyists with ulterior motives.
downWidOutaFite··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
How do you know if the beef you're eating is from an old or young cow?
downWidOutaFite··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
Is there really much difference between mutton and lamb meats?

Google is banned in China while Apple is not (because they bend their own rules to get that sweet Chinese cash).
downWidOutaFite··on Ultra-processed food linked to higher risk of depression, research finds
I get annoyed at all the "processed food" studies because when you go to look up the definition of ultraprocessed and processed it's all very hand-wavy "you know it when you see it" kind of thing so there's no way to know what to avoid in your diet.
downWidOutaFite··on Text editing on mobile: the invisible problem
To me the article reads as if it was originally targeted at his colleagues at google who told him they weren't going to implement his ideas.
downWidOutaFite··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
I've seen too many cases, recent example comes to mind is apple switching from bash to zsh, that are done not for technical or even business reason but ideological.
downWidOutaFite··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
Right, corporate lawyers are ideological activists trying to kill GPL. But the campaign to denigrate the ideological activists on the other side is much more successful.
downWidOutaFite··on Google settles account settings lawsuit less than one week after being filed [pdf]
I had no idea all the expats from before 10 years ago were crippled.
downWidOutaFite··on DALL·E 3
Llama was leaked which forced Facebook's hand.
downWidOutaFite··on DALL·E 3
Open could be used to describe the public interface to the closed model. As compared to Google's pre-chatgpt models which where inaccessible to the public.
downWidOutaFite··on How many medical studies are faked or flawed?
I don't think the claim was 95% against symptomatic covid, it was against hospitalization or death.

The vaccine was tested against the original virus but Omicron was almost a different disease with much more immune escape. We're lucky the vaccine held up as well as it did. This is also why the alternative doctors that wanted everyone to catch covid to build up herd immunity were wrong, but nobody seems to bring them up. These discussions just devolve into the usual polarized political talking points.

downWidOutaFite··on JDK 21 Release Notes
Most Android development is done in Kotlin which is where Java has been copying it's features from for the last 5 years. In that way, Android programming has been the future of Java programming today. But now Java has basically caught up, I blame this on Kotlin having lost focus on multiplatform and having stopped innovating new language features.
downWidOutaFite··on Why Ugly Architecture Is Bad for Your Health
I was hoping the headline was about software architecture because I blame the codebase I work on for my stress and depression.
downWidOutaFite··on Yes, Android 14 still allows modification of system certificates
After wiping all data and losing access to a bunch of features and apps.

downWidOutaFite··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
These days "security" has been perverted so it is mostly not about protecting you from attackers, it's about preventing you from accessing your own data or running the apps that you want. You are the threat that they are securing against. Less "secure" means more freedom for you. Less "secure" can also mean more real security for you since you have to leave the mainstream which is what actual attackers target.
downWidOutaFite··on A boy saw 17 doctors over 3 years for pain. ChatGPT found the right diagnosis
Health info on google was captured by the likes of webmd and healthline 20 years ago and they've just been farming their seo position ever since, absolutely no innovation, just regurgitating medical literature 101.

But it really feels like Google's entire ecosystem is collapsing rapidly as seo bots cannibalize it. Ad-supported content is a local optima that LLMs will thankfully destroy.

downWidOutaFite··on Chronic fatigue syndrome may have a post-viral infection origin
It wasn't that well known until the people that have been trying to minimize covid since day 1 started talking about it.
downWidOutaFite··on Critical ignoring as a core competence for digital citizens (2022)
