downWidOutaFite··on Why is everything an orchid?
Would appreciate this kind of comment being labeled as by ChatGPT or whatever you used.
downWidOutaFite··on On being listed as an artist whose work was used to train Midjourney
You got that via the legal "first sale doctrine" which has been killed for digital works.
downWidOutaFite··on A link between low interest rates and low crime (2016)
No
downWidOutaFite··on Expand Everything: Userscript to click "show more" links to expand all the text
My sarcastic comment was flagged but the point I was (poorly) trying to make is that this is an awesome extension but it goes against platforms' goals. If it gets popular the platforms will fight against it.
downWidOutaFite··on Expand Everything: Userscript to click "show more" links to expand all the text
Reading too much slows down scrolling and ad views, you must keep scrolling. Also, trying to have meaningful conversations with others might lead to independent ideas or actions that are out of the control of the platform, all ideas or actions must benefit only the platform and its adverisers.
downWidOutaFite··on DJI's First Delivery Drone Takes Flight Globally
It's so much cheaper than tanks though, as long you can get a satellite connection. Which means Elon is ideally positioned to compete with nation states if he wants to. I mean more than he already is. Scary dude.
downWidOutaFite··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
I think this kind of highlights the ios vs android user mentality. afavour is annoyed that google is trying to lock them into only using google's shopping list while you love when apple "just works" within their ecosystem.
downWidOutaFite··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
I prefer giving a notice but then doing absolutely no work besides chitchatting with the people I liked and planning my goodbye party, while still collecting a paycheck.
downWidOutaFite··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
I don't get it. The authenticity overreaction is weird to me. Like something immature youngsters would be concerned with.
downWidOutaFite··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
How is he not flawed? He's under multiple indictments, has been impeached twice, and voters already rejected him once. Seriously flawed is about right.
downWidOutaFite··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
What is the general cable news alternative with better journalism? I know of none.

For individual news shows I think the best are 60 Minutes and Frontline.

downWidOutaFite··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
Sorry but I'm glad you aren't able to implement those features on the web.
downWidOutaFite··on Firefox Sync actually works
They caved because they were afraid that without Netflix they would lose market share but then they lost market share anyways. In the alternate universe where they didn't cave users mounted a pressure campaign against Netflix for blocking Firefox and that got the FTC's attention and Netflix was the one that caved .
downWidOutaFite··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
Wow they want to kill it. I wonder if we've just lived through the golden Napster era of LLMs.
downWidOutaFite··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
This answer is unsatisfying to me because "not allowing trade with 3rd parties" could be seen as a version of "unreasonably restrained trade".

In general I think it's incorrect to try to divine a consistent legal principle from these two cases. Trials have an element of randomness so either case could have gone the other way under different judges and lawyers.

downWidOutaFite··on Find out who owns a nursing home with our Nursing Home Inspect tool
You're implying that less government should be the goal. I don't care about the size, i want better government.
downWidOutaFite··on Find out who owns a nursing home with our Nursing Home Inspect tool
Not sure what you're implying but in my mind getting rid of government unions would be priority #1.
downWidOutaFite··on Find out who owns a nursing home with our Nursing Home Inspect tool
Yes. I wish we'd move on from the tired more/less government debate and focused on better government. But neither party seems to care.
downWidOutaFite··on Windows 10 end of life could prompt torrent of e-waste
The law should be that if you end support for hardware you have to open source all its software including any services needed for it to run.
downWidOutaFite··on A better Mastodon client?
Be careful with engagement stats on Mastodon, only the origin server will show all the likes and boosts.
downWidOutaFite··on EU opens proceedings against X over efforts to combat information manipulation
Some guy isn't just giving his opinion, "If memory serves" implies that he has knowledge of an unreleased EU government report but his credentials seem to be of an american or maybe uk corporate lawyer and barely a professor at an american university. No reason to believe he has privileged access to the report. Though there is reason to believe he's practiced in the arts of online propaganda wars.
downWidOutaFite··on EU opens proceedings against X over efforts to combat information manipulation
Some guy's credentials have nothing to do with the lack of evidence provided.
downWidOutaFite··on What happens in the brain while daydreaming?
I'm tired of all the gatekeeping by the health industry telling us that we need to use their absurd rube goldberg processes, which often tell us "no", to know anything about ourselves.
downWidOutaFite··on Etsy is laying off 11% of its staff
Why do a lot of tech companies give big severances? I don't think other industries do it. It's strangely generous.
downWidOutaFite··on AI’s big rift is like a religious schism

downWidOutaFite··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
That's not the same risk because 23andme also has name, address, email.

One risk if you have PII+genome is that a technically sophisticated entity can determine if you've physically been in a location. Also with an extensive PII+genome database they could find your family, for example for blackmail purposes.

Another risk is that a health insurance provider could deny you based on potential health issues they find in your genome.

downWidOutaFite··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
Wow that is super hidden! They have a fake ToS to try to stop you from seeing the real one.
downWidOutaFite··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
ipso facto, if the monopolist doesn't even let a market exist then by definition they're not abusing it.
downWidOutaFite··on FDA approves a CRISPR-based medicine for treatment of sickle cell disease

downWidOutaFite··on White House threatens to veto anti-EV bill just passed by US House
The disappointing thing is that not a single Republican crossed over in the other direction. Strict ideological enforcement seems much stronger on the GOP side.
