doublepg23··on Substack writers, you need a website
I follow a very prolific open-source/FOSS podcasting network.

All of their infrastructure from the very bottom to the very top is FOSS - except their membership program. It links to a third-party which processes payments compliantly.

They've attempted a pivot to funding the network via BTC/Lightning but clearly that's polarizing to a lot of people even though it better aligns with their philosophy.

I've always understood platforms like Substack or Patreon to really be a solution to the payment processing problem first and foremost.
doublepg23··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Considering both Xbox and PlayStation consoles support DVDs I think there will be quite a long tail for playing DVDs.
doublepg23··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I had this discussion with my friend before and it really doesn't take long until you really are screwed in an apocalypse scenario.

We could barely agree on the probable scenarios - "dollar collapse" is bad enough without even getting into "aerosol transmissible Ebola" or the like.

doublepg23··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
It's gone up in the ranking of most-visited websites [1]. I'm not even a Twitter/X user but that's a far cry from what the pundits were saying was inevitable.

doublepg23··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
I'm almost 30 and I haven't run into a "survival situation" where I needed cursive.

I would hazard a guess it falls below knowing Spanish but above folding origami cranes.

Weird I scrolled this far for “friends”.

That’s the killer feature. I haven’t met a person who couldn’t use PLEX.

The Google "blob" emoji was the peak of emoji design.

Funny enough, neither the PS4 or PS5 support CDs. https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/play-vide...
doublepg23··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
I’m a heavy Tailscale user, so I do trust them quite a bit, but I never used the Tailscale SSH feature. I feel like OpenSSH’s security record is pretty unbeatable, not sure why I’d swap over for such a security-sensitive tool.

Perhaps “Jobs for new families” would be better phrasing?

This isn’t a hypothetical scenario though - the lack of economic opportunity across the border is a key reason of why I’m married.

I think you’re tilting at windmills here.

The industries sustaining the city are healthcare, finance and higher edu. There’s no invasion of m fedora-toting tech bros building B2B SaaS AI Agents.

This is a group of current inhabitants who do want the city to improve who are submitting -honestly minor - proposals to keep Pittsburgh from going the way of many of the other Rust-Belt cities.

doublepg23··on Modernizing Property Tax Assessments in Allegheny County
Is this not the Rust-Belt writ large?

De-industrialization for decades on decades - of which Pittsburgh did an okay job of pivoting (many many other towns nearby faired far far worse) - pile on brain drain to the Coasts and a opioid epidemic to boot, I don’t see how this is an indictment of Yinzers.

doublepg23··on Modernizing Property Tax Assessments in Allegheny County
How can you sustain a city if the existing inhabitants children would rather leave?
doublepg23··on Modernizing Property Tax Assessments in Allegheny County
Jobs and new families?

I’ve become intimately familiar with Youngstown, OH - about 70 miles away from the Pittsburgh - and it’s a great case study of how far a once-powerhouse city can fall if it doesn’t a actively reinvent itself.

doublepg23··on Modernizing Property Tax Assessments in Allegheny County
Unexpected to see this talked about on HN.

I actually went through the Allegheny county “newcomer tax” just some months ago.

It was a bit of a strange process to appeal (I lost; my house is very weird for the area).

While I do see the benefit for not raising taxes so consistently for long-term owners (and could definitely see gentrification-esque effects) it does seem like a pretty obvious - if bitter - pill to swallow if the area is going to have any chance of continued growth.

doublepg23··on Ben Bernanke Joins Anthropic Oversight Trust
Have people (smarter than me) come up with a good equation - or at least heuristic - to determine what inventions are morally good?

I suppose it'd be from a utilitarian perspective?

Ex: My gut feeling is nitrogen fixing would rank "low" on "terminal ecological impact" against "positive benefits to humanity"; the Vinyl resurgence would be around the middle; private jets for the Epstein class would the highest etc.

My hobby horse is the lack of a “modern” filesystem on obsd.

Without journaling I really don’t agree with the oft repeated claims it makes a good “router”.

Any networking gear I’ve used is treated as an appliance and I don’t want an unfortunate power outage causing data loss.
