doubleorseven··on Tuning Out: What Happens When You Drop Facebook?
Correct. I closed all of my social media accounts 6 years ago and I must say that you do end up missing collections of stories. I could read a blog here and there but at the end I'm drawn to links and comments in a chronological order.
doubleorseven··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
How do you manage not to keep thinking about how you gonna finish it? Sometimes even the easiest tasks can make me daydream about the final outcome.
doubleorseven··on Tidelift wants open-source developers to get paid
"When a customer signs up with Tidelift, the company analyzes the customer's code to see what open source software it depends on, and what open source projects those programs depend on. Tidelift then charges a subscription fee based on the number of participating projects a customer relies on."

Sure, just run `npm install` and try to come up with a reasonable number that will look like something i'll be willing to pay for.

doubleorseven··on Bitcoin is an energy arbitrage
If it used to take you 8.5 minutes to pick 2 apples and now it takes 10 then yeah, 1/6 < 1/7
doubleorseven··on Parity Wallet security alert
Thank you for that. Just to make one thing clear, the person who destroyed the contract was after people's money. He posted a list of contract addresses in the github issue, most of them look like ICO wallets, with a transaction made the time before he destroyed the contract. The transaction was from him to his wallet trying to drain the wallets. After he failed to he went to the destroy function thinking it will propagate to the wallets and moving the funds to him ( this part is just a theory ) or he is just a jerk who wanted to see the world burn.
doubleorseven··on Parity Wallet security alert
Everything in the "library" was "OK" the problem was that the person who deployed the contract to the main network forgot to call the constructor function. The guy who killed the contract was the first one to initiate the contract.

My wife once left the car running and went to buy gum in a drug store, the car wasn't their when she got back. Shit happens I guess.

doubleorseven··on Google Pixel Buds are wireless earbuds that translate conversations in real-time
Sorry for the short comment but won't this be the next "Google glasses"?
doubleorseven··on Optimizing web servers for high throughput and low latency
wow. This is the kind of article i'm expecting to see when I google for "Nginx best practices 2018". I am so far behind, maybe 20% of my usual setup include those recommendations. Thank you Dropbox.

If someone can point me to a thorough article like this on the lua module, I will thank her/him forever.

doubleorseven··on Stencil – A reusable web component generator
Maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfD-k7aHkQE
doubleorseven··on Understand Go pointers
This might be off subject but to me this language always tries to make me understand the underlying of being a programmer. I always look at the third party support for versioning as a way of the Golang to tell me: "this is one way of doing it. Read it, copy what you need and make it your own".

+1 for the javascript breakouts every now and then.

doubleorseven··on Setting Up HTTP(S) Load Balancing – WebSocket proxy support
Since when AWS is offering SNI on their load balancers?

I work at a SaaS company and we were facing the same issue in the cloud and have to implement our own TCP LB's to support SNI. I really hope we will see it in the near future but as i see it, Will I allow my clients to push bytecode into my production machines on demand with the lowest sandboxing possible to provide low execution times? I guess not.

Wait for the NEXT event. Radis will be announced.
doubleorseven··on Eating grapes can help prevent Alzheimer’s and boost memory
What about drinking fermented grapes? I've been practicing this for years!
doubleorseven··on Ask HN: What are the pros/cons of deleting Facebook if you a developer?
I've deleted mine 5 years ago and im using a fake acount to do stuff if needed, so i don't see how it can effect from a developer perspective. From the human point of view, I usually hear about stuff two days after my friends and sometimes miss a joke, that it.

In a few weeks you will probably find yourself more reading than refreshing and that is a good thing for a developer

doubleorseven··on Snap Inc. S-1
Just to clarify your answer, here is another thing Google won't tell you: once you build yourself in their cloud you will have to find something else to do with all the time you used to spend on latency.
doubleorseven··on Chrome 56 will mark HTTP pages with password fields as non-secure
This maybe my own rule of thumb but i believe that companies that serves sensetive forms over http also save the password in plain text.

They should be a shamed.

doubleorseven··on Firebase: The Good, Bad, and the Ugly
" If your database requires a lot of relationships, it’s worth modeling out how your database will be constructed in Firebase before choosing to use it. "

Wait what? Modeling your entire application is the first step before you jump on any train. I get it that you say that firebase is different(is it?), but i get the feeling that you are used to using an ORM, right?

I think it's a good rule on thumb to remember that google create products for masses, so the product has to be as broad as it can. they don't create this "simple very easy to use plug and play out of the box" kind of software, but they give you the infrastructure to build your dreams on it. firebase is not some AWS toy, it's a real thing with real problems. you need to tame it and in order to do this you have to know your application inside out.

doubleorseven··on Wolfenstein 3D – Gameboy cartridge with co-processor
This is huge!!! I just pulled my super mario cartridge yesterday out of storage to test that it still works. I would love to get a copy when you are done.

The product ssl certificate alerts my browser. The year is 2016, if you want to serve, serve! Don't bluf.
doubleorseven··on [dead]
You are right. Obama raised the bar to a level where the old politicians cease to exist, making Hillary last year's stew. But you sound more like the muslims in israel who vote to the right wing party.. and if you ask them, i'm not saying it in a good way.

doubleorseven··on Many developers and creative pros are blasting Apple’s new MacBook Pro
Wow. What's wrong with people? It's a laptop! It should be durable and updated with the latest hardware. Plus more battery time. We go on and on about the cloud but no one wishes for the xeon family inside ( it will be hard to call it a laptop with it ). And dont get me started about touchscreens, super overrated! I really love the idea of the bar and my last pro was a mid 2010. This pro is now my media center running Sierra, if you asked me back in 2010 i would never guess i will still see it around today, but there it is. How about rant on the fact that it's 2016 and cancer and AIDS are still a big deal?

doubleorseven··on Ask HN: Modern live streaming solutions for the web
Check out HLS. Based on http so no special ports or udp. Also support HTTPS. And you should reconsider WebRTC, it's amazing.
