doubled112··on Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes
Women’s clothing has always confused me.

I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and the bride’s dress had pockets. It may have been the least important time in her life to have them, but it had them.

doubled112··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
This approach is completely reasonable because kids are completely reasonable.
doubled112··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
These days I run a Matrix home server with bridges to Slack and WhatsApp so I can use fewer chat clients.

I do wish the Matrix client situation was less messy.

The “gas station” being my driveway is an idea I have come around to.

For the average commuter and vehicle, it would be more convenient.

My family’s closest family is 750km away. Making that a longer trip sounds like torture, but range is getting better all the time.

I also rent, so I’m stuck at 120v charging at home. Does that limit the convenience?

doubled112··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
Back in my day, Google wasn’t an LLM. And we liked it!
doubled112··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Exactly. Maybe it is just me, but with a range around 450km I feel like I’m planning trips around filling up. It’s something I never thought about before.

Now I am stuck in line ups for gas because I can’t decide I don’t need it. This is true even just around town.

Maybe it’s a first world issue. It gets better all the time though. Maybe next car.

doubled112··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
I used to do a ~700KM trip fairly regularly without stopping.

Like I said though, the whole convenience isn’t just single trip range.

doubled112··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
I don’t think people understand how convenient it is to be able to go 1000+ KM without thinking about filling up or charging, even if it isn’t in one trip.

I could do it in a 2002 Jetta. Why can’t I do it in a vehicle 25 years newer?

doubled112··on Microsoft abandons personal AI chatbot race with Copilot reboot
Microsoft allows you to subscribe to Microsoft 365 personal or family without AI for a small discount, but they hid the option on a page you can only get to if you click cancel on your subscription.
doubled112··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
> I'm fond of pointing out the stat (true as of a year ago) that Massachusetts (I think it's MA?) has more MRI machines than the entire country of Canada.

I'm also quite fond of pointing out that Canada and the state of California have roughly the same populations.

Canada's population is incredibly spread out, but also concentrated in about 5 major cities.

When I needed an MRI on my brain is was roughly a week, and that was in a smaller (under 100K people) city.

It's a triage system, although I wouldn't want to suffer through a "less important" issue.

doubled112··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
I don't generally suck on the tailpipe of my car like a cigarette or vape.
doubled112··on Custom home server built from spare parts
USB is unreliable but it's working for me. I've had zero disconnects in a couple of years of using a Terramaster USB-C DAS. I've heard of the problems enough I've even searched logs for it.

I've wondered if my experience is different because I'm using single disks (but still ZFS) instead of any RAID. There is rarely transfer happening across all of the disks.

doubled112··on Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip
> I still use Btrfs because I know it is guaranteed to always be present on any Linux without any effort on my part.

Except RHEL. They don’t include it in their kernels.

Alma Linux started including it again though.

It can never be easy.

doubled112··on Systemd is a suite of basic building blocks
I think it’d really help on the highway with traffic.

I don’t need it all the time, but that doesn’t stop it from being useful.

doubled112··on Backups Aren't Simple
I seem to remember being able to select all of the photos in iCloud in a browser and clicking download. It zips them and it worked.

I would imagine this doesn't work well after a certain amount of data. I’m also not sure they were the originals.

doubled112··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
Sounds like I won a lottery I didn’t know I was entering.
doubled112··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
I think that I would get more enjoyment dropping $20 in the parking lot at a casino and seeing somebody excited to find $20 than going inside to gamble it away.

I was surprised that the “fix” for the failed storage module in my slim 4GB Xbox 360 was to tear it down and remove the storage module. It isn’t usually that easy.

I am also impressed they managed to use worse flash than the 15 year old $10 USB 2.0 drive I plugged in as a replacement.

Yes, it was one of those projects you see what you still have in the bin. Hey, this one is period correct!

doubled112··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
I remember some panic and thinking I’ll just hope for the best.

With modern synthetics and my driving patterns, that is 1 jug for one of my cars, and 2 jugs for the other.

Maybe now wouldn’t be the worst time. It isn’t a lot of space wasted if I didn’t need it.

doubled112··on JetKVM Mini
Exactly. Disk encryption simplifies a stolen device to a VISA problem.

As in, no problem, I will just buy another one. At these RAM and storage prices, maybe not.

doubled112··on JetKVM Mini
I am using Tang and Clevis without a TPM on an Orange Pi 5. The key is stored on my Tang server. No TPM required.

It is either on my LAN with that server available, or you will need to enter a key.

It am only trying to prevent casual snooping if it goes missing from my garage though. Anybody more sophisticated can have my garage YouTube browsing history.

doubled112··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
In the last couple of years, my only contact with Zoom is the scam webinar invitations from month old domains.

At this point I probably wouldn’t realize a legitimate Zoom meeting was legitimate.

doubled112··on The worst spam emails: iLands AI agent hustle
Wasn’t that was social media?

The risk of being punched in the mouth for your word choice dropped to zero, and suddenly all of these opinions were being shouted at anybody that would listen.

I suppose we can automate that sharing better now.

doubled112··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
I have a 12 and 9 year old, and I've been 750km from family since the oldest was one. We didn't really have anybody to watch them. Can confirm.

The excitement when school started was real. Same when my wife and I realized leaving them by themselves for short periods of time was probably doable.

I noticed I was pretty triggered when I heard a friend complain "it's hard to go a weekend without supports". She meant her parents. Sure, you should try a decade...

doubled112··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
I thought sun exposure was bad. Or is it good again? Was it good all along?

Do I need to wear sunscreen in front of my desk too now? Will the body cream include it?

Too many questions. I'm going outside.

doubled112··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
Dolphin in KDE has to be one of my favourite GUI file managers ever.

Simple to use until you need it to be complicated, then it probably does what you’re looking for.

doubled112··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
Dogpile?!? There's a name I haven't heard in what feels like 20 years.

The concept of searching a bunch of search engines made sense to me.

doubled112··on EasyEffects can massively improve laptop speaker sound quality
The definition of sound quality tends to change between people.

My definition is pretty much the same as yours here, but I know quite a few people who hate listening to music on anything with a relatively flat frequency response.
