double_nan··on Society has a trust problem. More censorship will only make it worse
There is a difference between fighting censorship and supporting a platform of the day. So fight censorship, don't support substack, YT, FB or anything else. On the side note: having many competing platforms help to fight censorship. So if you are serious about that I don't see how you can't support and promote diversity. Any road will start with the first steps anyway and having 5,10,50 platforms is better than having 3 platforms and seems like a good first step.
double_nan··on Society has a trust problem. More censorship will only make it worse
I guess there was too much trust in the MSM at one point and what we see now is a 2 fold problem: 1. A hangover after the blind trust period 2. A degradation of MSM became obvious and opened a way for smaller outlets and citizen journalists.

I got your point, but what is the hill we should die on? I'd say censorship is the one.

I'm not sure that there is such a beacon of truth you are looking for. May be that should be the resolution after all the dust settles.

But should these ideas be censored though?
double_nan··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
I mostly agree with the maturity argument and because of that all the attempts to push more decision making (like voting) on younger people seem strange to me. But the most curious topic for me at the moment is why we are lowering our expectations for 18-25 years old. We used to see them as young but fully capable adults (granted that is a shift from 14-16 years from 100-1000 years ago). I understand the educational part of the argument as well but some of the trends seems very strange to me. For example: as far as I understand there is no strong expectation that ppl after high school know what they want to do and it’s normal to take 1-2 years break between school and college. Is it a new thing? I don’t really know. But I can’t find comparable breaks in history or other (less wealthy) societies. Health insurance cut off dates are 21 (25?) years old. University system seems more and more similar to a nice place to spend time (better dorms before better classes) than to the place to efficiently receive your education.

I’m mostly curious about why the maturity period was prolonged by 5-10 years from what the human race had 100 or 1000 years ago. I’m not talking about education but the transition from youths to adulthood.

I’m wondering what has changed in the human nature (if any) that we need day care for ppl older than 18-19 years now. What did such ppl do 100 (or 1000) years ago to overcome all that.
double_nan··on Homelessness rises faster where rent exceeds a third of income (2018)
Sometime ago I came to a conclusion that there might be another reason why american (western) left is talking more than acting on the problems from their agenda: any action has 2 inherent risks: risk of failure and risk of success. While risk of failure is quite easy to understand, risk of success is a very different beast. Risk of success is when solved problem renders the entire movement pointless and puts people in power at risk of losing control.
double_nan··on How to Delete Your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok
While all the services above are more or less replaceable (one way or another) or possible to stop using them all together, it’s really hard to replace services like gmail. I wish I have a manual on how to do that properly with a self hosted solution but i’ve never seen something like this.

Direct power yes. Political? Well the answer is different.
double_nan··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
Well, it’s not easy to understand the full list of responsibilities for the PM ppl, but from my point of view at apple the most important and valuable asset is access to VP+ folks. PMs and designers have the most of it.
double_nan··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
That is true. It has its own downsides as well. Like extremely outdated and bad tech in the areas not visible to the higher ups.
double_nan··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
Designers and PMs. Apple is being ran by designers and PMs. Which is not really a bad thing from users point of view.

From my point of view there is a hierarchy of swe’s at apple. On the top are iOS devs - the one who are the closest to the users and execs. Next are macos, hardware, backend. After all of that you have IST eng (i hope that i remember the name of the org correctly) and not really people from Apple’s point of view: contractors.
double_nan··on Once poor, always poor?
Risking is one option, but there is another one: the breaking might take more than one generation an that is something which is often overlooked by the modern discourse. Every next generation might end up a bit better off and on the timespan of 50 years the poverty cycle will be broken.

Both cars I have allow to do that. I can't be absolutely sure, but I want to say that I don't remember a car without height adjustable shoulder belt.
double_nan··on Princeton researcher apologizes for GDPR/CCPA email study
I would argue that even for larger websites this would not be a valid logic either. Such websites might have a team responsible for such issues, but this is not the service these websites provide nor the primary way of operation for these websites but rather a way to mitigates risks. Such risks burden the websites and are raising costs for the websites to operate. It's an abuse of service somewhat similar to shoplifting.

Your analogy with mystery shopper doesn't hold the water as well since the researchers in such cases are just executing the primary function of the businesses in question. So while for the bigger sites you might be correct that the research is not a human subject research but it's still an abuse of service which in unethical without consent as well.

That is a very generous way of thinking about (no doubt) very smart people.
double_nan··on Daylight saving time is 'not helpful' and has 'no upsides,' experts say
I think you underestimate the areas where full (or significant) staff is needed. What about manufacturing jobs, farming, transportation and logistics (especially transportation of ppl not goods), services (including public services).

I'd say all the services which require face to face interaction will become way more costly if such buffers will be needed to cover off hours. For example: there is a notion of skeleton crew and the service might not be operational without that crew so the choice is actually to spread the cost of off hours low load to the high load hours or close the business for low load hours.

double_nan··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
There is absolutely no problem to give money to the government. Filing in taxes with extra is fast and easy. Filing for the exact sum is hard.
double_nan··on Tesla’s headquarters will move to Austin
The loan will be cheap but not free. The problem with shares is that their price can go down to zero in case of company bankruptcy. So there will be premium for that risk.
