dottjt··on There's a COMPUTER inside my DS flashcart [video]
I actually have this flashcart. The issue with it is that it drains a heap of battery, so it's not ideal if you're just playing NDS stuff.

I also tried to fit the entire DS game library on an SD card for this flashcart, and the main challenge was figuring out how to organise the files so that it wouldn't crash the cart.

Basically you can't have everything in the one folder cause I think it tries to load everything all at once, so I had to separate it by a-z. And even then, I think I've limited to around 100 files per folder.

dottjt··on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?
How are these things for emulation?
dottjt··on Major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean
Not that I necessarily believe it, but isn't the rationale that technology allows us to scale without the need for additional humans? A bit in the same way that oil provides us many multiples of manpower?

So for example, if AI can replace the need for additional humans, then overall we're using net less energy?

dottjt··on Major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean
what's so special about that model?
dottjt··on Websites hosting major US climate reports taken down
I liked the idea behind the movie, but the movie itself wasn't very good. It was a bit like the movie Mickey 17, it didn't quite know what it wanted to be and tried to be a lot of things, but none of it really stuck and it ended up being a bit incoherent. The ending I thought was powerful though.
dottjt··on China Dominates 44% of Visible Fishing Activity Worldwide
What I'm describing is much broader: Food security i.e. running out of fish to extract from the seas.
dottjt··on China Dominates 44% of Visible Fishing Activity Worldwide
I find it interesting how China is so keen to develop EVs as a way to get away from oil dependency, yet other areas of their economy aren't treated with the same urgency.
dottjt··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
I would have to disagree. Those same games that didn't work on SteamOS worked flawlessly on Windows 11.
dottjt··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
The main pain point I have with SteamOS is game compatibility, in particular with older games (90s/2000s).

Maybe 60% of games work and it's such a headache trying to get it working, if it can be fixed at all.

Modern games however tend to work really well.

dottjt··on Musk-Trump dispute includes threats to SpaceX contracts
Not quite relevant, but I've noticed that there's this trend on HN where if there's a non-tech-related happening that's significant and it's obviously something that people want to discuss, people will try and find a tech-related angle in order to discuss the wider issue.
dottjt··on Cockatoos have learned to operate drinking fountains in Australia
Not at all related (though I am Australian), but I was visiting a primary school one time and there was a large sand pit for the children to play in. Next to the sand pit was a newly installed drinking fountain. However funnily, the entire drinking fountain was completely clogged with sand, I assume from children bringing the sand to the drinking fountain in order to play with the water. Thought it was funny how by simple placement, defeated the utility of that device.
dottjt··on Brain aging shows nonlinear transitions, suggesting a midlife "critical window"
What you're saying makes no sense without context. You say "we" but someone who's extremely active vs extremely sedentary are going to require different macros to compensate.
dottjt··on Brain aging shows nonlinear transitions, suggesting a midlife "critical window"
> Most who lift and do low carb time their carbs before and after workouts for specifically this reason. Some also do carbs before bed.

This is exactly what I do. I have a have a pre-workout carb meal to try and compensate.

Though one interesting thing I've noticed is that I've intentionally had to eat carbs as my body fat percentage has decreased. Otherwise I feel very low energy (though to be fair, I think part of it is that I'm still very active on my rest days, usually doing 20 - 30k steps). I think with higher body fat my body could simply burn that fat for energy, whereas that surplus simply isn't there.

dottjt··on Brain aging shows nonlinear transitions, suggesting a midlife "critical window"
As someone who has been weight lifting for the past few years and previously was really into keto diets, one thing I've realised is that carbs are simply necessary in order to have the energy to push very heavy weights. Fat just doesn't give you the required energy to do so.

With that said, if you're only pushing moderately heavy weights or if you're a beginner and you're starting out with low weights, then it usually can be done.

Though the compromise is usually to eat high carb/low fat on workout days, and low carb/high fat on rest days. Fasting as well helps a ton.

dottjt··on Father Ted Kilnettle Shrine Tape Dispenser
Literally been watching through this series over the past week. Interesting to see it here.
dottjt··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
I think a huge tradeoff that people haven't mentioned is that in using AI to replace workers, you're introducing a dependency on AI that you previously didn't have. This poses a terrible long-term risk for companies.
dottjt··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
I think what's happening though is that current generations are taking it easier in a lot of ways as a result of having to work more. For example, avoiding senior promotions into management etc.
dottjt··on Building my childhood dream PC
Maybe not quite related, but I remember as a teenager dreaming about building the ultimate modern gaming PC, because the PC I had kind of sucked. But now that I'm an adult and can more-than afford it, I simply don't want to spend the money. I mean, I still would love to have my dream PC, it's just not worth the value in my mind.
dottjt··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
I think it depends on what you value.

I think a large part of taking photos and recording things for a lot of people is that they like to journal and record things, in part, for future generations to have.

Like it's great you had those amazing experiences, but in a sense it's as if they're also going to die with you as well (assuming you even have children).

Of course, nothing wrong with what you're describing. I definitely can feel there's value in how you approach it, and I often fantasise about spending an entire year without technology at all.

dottjt··on Ask HN: What's a good system to remember to wear my reading glasses at my desk?
I think this might be the answer.

I think the issue is that I just do so much at my desk. I work. I eat etc. So it's like, when I'm eating it doesn't occur to me to wear them. but I just need to remember that when I'm at my desk, I wear them. Though wearing them all the time in the house might be the answer.

dottjt··on Ask HN: What's a good system to remember to wear my reading glasses at my desk?
I've tried this, it didn't seem to work. I think half the challenge is remembering to even put them on your keyboard in the first place - because if you miss it once, then it's completely out of mind.

For context, I guess part of the issue is that I'm moving from my desk a lot and coming back.

dottjt··on My sourdough starter has twins
The bit I always struggled with sourdoughs is the baking part. It would just never bake correctly and end up either exploding (large pocket of air) or be some kind of subterraneous sponge cake. I've never had this issue with baking regular yeast bread.
dottjt··on The Friendship Recession: The lost art of connecting
I mean, that's probably a different dynamic. I didn't have to interact with the adults in that scenario, I could just be alone in my room.

To be fair, I think I was just a shy child/teenager. I didn't really feel comfortable talking, it's more I'd just sit and listen. In the back of my mind, all I really wanted to do was watch TV or playing videos, and often what would happen is I would just sit in front of their TV.

That's not to say that their friends weren't interesting people. It's just more, as a child I didn't really feel like I could directly interact.

dottjt··on Economists don't know what's going on
I would describe that more as a distraction or a cope in response to something, not as a balance. With balance you wouldn't need excessive entertainment to begin with.

It'd be like saying we have cigarettes to deal with stress or mental health professions to deal with excessive expectations of society. They don't address the cause in the first place.

dottjt··on Economists don't know what's going on
I guess the issue regarding the OP is that there needs to be some kind of balance. It's great that we have all these things, but it's at the cost of ever-increasing productivity and time. Perhaps in the modern age this trade off no longer seems fair, at least at current proportions.
dottjt··on The Friendship Recession: The lost art of connecting
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. I generally hated being dragged to the friends houses of my parents. It was just needlessly boring.

On the contrary, it sometimes was okay if that friend had children. I think the issue in the modern day however, is that less people are having children, so there simply isn't the opportunity. For example, I'm the only person in my friend group who has children.

dottjt··on The year I didn't survive
Fair enough. I feel it's not uncommon for people with children to remarry, but yeah I imagine it has it's own challenges.

I feel like for me it would be a) Wanting someone I have a deep connection with and b) Someone who's interested in children. I feel that keeps it simple.

But yeah, I just think about how much I wouldn't be able to provide my daughter as a male, given I know so little about hair, make up etc. I mean, I'd obviously learn it all, but it would be easier to have someone who was already on that page.

dottjt··on The year I didn't survive
Did you decide to date again? Do you think having a mother figure for your child is important for them?
dottjt··on The year I didn't survive
That's part of the issue, there is no one like that unless if I were to remarry.
dottjt··on The year I didn't survive
Do you think it's important for your child to have a relationship his mother, if that makes any sense at all? Like do you celebrate her birthday etc.

How do you retain that connection, or do you just leave it in the past?
