doorbumper··on Economist behind Uber study admits error, adjusts numbers
That is not overstated. The rating has a significant impact on their livelihood. In addition, tips are 100% profit. I'm sure $5 is chump change to you, but a $5 tip an hour would be 60% pay increase.

doorbumper··on Amazon will stop selling Nest smart home devices
That's a well and fine point. However, by being unclear there is no indication that those companies are not partnering. That could be construed as propagating false rumors. It's not just the intent that is important, but how people are likely to perceive it.

It's more troublesome for Google to retaliate. Google is already under scrutiny for unfair search results from regulatory agencies all over the globe.

Amazon has gone mostly unnoticed, and exerts their power without fear of reprisal.

doorbumper··on When is a senior engineer not a senior engineer?
> But in my book, if one wants the title Senior Engineer then one has to have built and shipped something that generates more revenue (directly or indirectly) than what the system cost to build and maintain.

Wouldn't that eliminate engineers at companies that never found product market fit, or figured out their monetization strategy? Many projects get shipped, delivered, and used without generating revenue.

doorbumper··on Determining the Average Apple Device Lifespan
If you're going to applaud apple for "doing the right thing for customers", it might be good to think about apple's history. When during the last decade has apple ever not tried to ignore severe hardware issues before they lost a lawsuit? Apple has mistreated customers for a long time. They can get away it because their customers have few high end alternatives.

The truth is that they make calculated decisions whether ignoring the issue, or responding to the issue will be more beneficial to them financially and public opinion wise. This time they decided that the fallout from evidence of possible planned obsolescence—intentional or not—combined with the fact that a lost lawsuit was likely, and the fact that smartphone sales have fallen for the first time ever, would be financially more painful than compensating their customers.

doorbumper··on Sonic ‘Attacks’ Show Us How Susceptible Our Brains Are to Mass Hysteria
To many laypersons 1% seems like a small number. However when dealing with large numbers 1% is not at all rare. I don't know much about celiac disease, however to put that into perspective, that means that there are 4 times more people with celiacs disease than there are software developers in the world.
doorbumper··on Family fun with deepfakes
Which society is this? I'd be surprised if more than 5% of all people even know that the concept exists.

The problem is that there is no reward for speaking up, while there is punishment for speaking up.
