doomslice··on Javascript: call functions without using parentheses
They're called tagged templates: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Refe...

Apart from the other examples, I've also seen them be used for internationalization. http://i18n-tag.kolmer.net/

doomslice··on When optimising code, never guess, always measure
Also remember that the maximum speedup your program can get from a particular optimization is related to the total time your program spends executing that part.

You can speed up an algorithm 1000 fold but if it only accounts for 1% of your total execution time you've only gained a 1% speedup.

doomslice··on Node.js is now available on App Engine standard environment
How about eventsource or websocket connections? Will those work (both websockets to the server and to external servers)?
doomslice··on Node.js is now available on App Engine standard environment
I have a NodeJS app running on flex that I always thought was a little pricey, so I'll probably move it to standard.

However, I do have one question.

My app server currently polls another external endpoint periodically and does something based on the results. If I move it to standard will this still work? I assume not since it can scale to zero.

doomslice··on What I Have Learned from My Arbitrage Experiences with Cryptoassets
Have you tried doing any arbitrage on any of the DEX out there (the only one I have experience with is the Stellar DEX).

If you manage the offers yourself (rather than going through some client) there are no exchange fees, and the transactions are nearly instant.

There could be two approaches to it:

1) Find pairs/paths within the order book that can make a profit. There's practically no fees here so I suspect the margins will be pretty thin.

2) Use "anchors" to convert your Stellar assets back into the real cryptocurrency, and then deposit again them via another anchor (or exchange) and complete your trade.

doomslice··on Multi-core cryptography for Node.js
Everything in the comment chain from the node core devs seemed very reasonable. Add async crypto support as an option, investigate further whether async crypto should be the default by looking at performance numbers from real-world apps that are using it.

Not exactly sure what the issue is beyond that progress is going pretty slow, but no one has actually submitted a PR for it yet so you'd be arguing for priorities instead of whether they want to support it at all.

doomslice··on The ‘Terms and Conditions’ Reckoning Is Coming
Does that draw any distinction between paying and non-paying customers then as far as their rights? I see tons of "you assume all risks" sorts of Terms of Service, but I have a feeling those are likely just there and don't do much.
doomslice··on The ‘Terms and Conditions’ Reckoning Is Coming
But it seems like getting a lawyer involved is exactly what leads to these complicated Terms of Service. I would have to find a lawyer who agreed to significantly dumb down the Terms of Service, which I would suspect they would be opposed to -- I mean they are writing these things like this for a reason, right?
doomslice··on The ‘Terms and Conditions’ Reckoning Is Coming
Fair enough. I guess this is why I should get a lawyer involved! I was assuming there was some distinction between accidental negligence and fraud as far as what could be protected against.
doomslice··on The ‘Terms and Conditions’ Reckoning Is Coming
I've been thinking of writing my own Terms of Service for my cryptocurrency-related web startup -- with plain and clear language that the average person should be able to understand. Several people have advised me that this is a horrible idea and that I should enlist the help of a lawyer to write it instead.

Some things I want to protect myself against:

- People suing if they lose their private keys and are no longer able to make transactions

- People suing if they forget their passwords and can no longer access their email they signed up with to do a recovery.

- People suing if they lose their 2FA code and can no longer access their account

- People suing if a bug in my software causes them to lose access to their account or coins

- People suing if I decide to close down my service (I will give 90 days notice --- or maybe more, haven't decided yet) and did not deactivate their accounts.

Basically trying to protect myself for anything that is not fraud on my part.

Seems like most people here are pro-"short and sweet" ToS -- what do you think about writing it myself?

doomslice··on Ending Bitcoin Support
Even if XLM was not intended to be used for direct payments, is there anything that actually prevents it from being used for it? From everything I see, it actually seems like a pretty good candidate for actual spending.
doomslice··on Dr. Seuss’ arms race allegory
I happened to read this to my 4 year olds a few weeks ago after finding it at my Mother-in-law's house. I can tell you that at least for 4 year olds, it's just a book about buttered bread.

My son asked for butter side down bread at lunch and my daughter asked for butter side up.

doomslice··on Stellar Protocol: A Federated Model for Internet-Level Consensus (2016) [pdf]
Response from Jed that I stumbled on the last time I was researching this. Oddly enough, I cannot find the response on Quora anymore.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Stellar/comments/7n8ntb/david_schwa...

> David I always enjoyed working with you and I thought we had a degree of respect for each other so I'm pretty disappointed in your tone here. I don't really want to get into a big back and forth about this but this just isn't correct. When I left ripple the board was 2 people; myself and Chris.

> I left because I made the mistake of bringing Chris on as CEO and it ended up being untenable to work with him for a variety of reasons.

> I feel like I've been extremely restrained in my criticism of ripple despite the frivolous lawsuits from you guys the constant attacks on my character and my family. I know you are actually a good person but I think you are in too deep to see how horrible Chris has acted toward me.

> Stellar hasn't abandoned the idea of distributing the lumens widely and the original facebook distribution was actually a success but the software/ecosystem wasn't ready for it at the time so we stopped it. We will do something similar in the future. I don't think any attempt at an internet level protocol like stellar or ripple can be widely adopted with a for profit company owning the majority of the tokens.

> Stellar has always been focused on cross border payments so the IBM announcement isn't a pivot by any means.

> Stellar and ripple are going after two completely different use cases as far as I can tell so I don't understand the continued hostility.

doomslice··on Use a Render Prop
Would you mind elaborating on how React.cloneElement works vs this?
doomslice··on Node v8.1.2
Would you mind sharing your tsconfig(s)? And also do you use sourcemaps on the server?
doomslice··on Lyft and Waymo Reach Deal to Collaborate on Self-Driving Cars
Not suggesting that this is the difference between it being worth it or not for an individual person, but I didn't feel like taking an Uber this time out of LAX and did a traditional cab to Pasadena -- it was $90. The Uber app quoted me at $38 and $33 if I had wanted to do pool (side note, I've ridden pool 3 times between LAX and Pasadena and not once have they ever picked up another passenger).

A savings of $50 for a one way trip is definitely at the point where the "spying" is worth it for me.

doomslice··on Rails 5.0.0.beta1: Action Cable, API Mode, Rails Command
Minor note -- it doesn't appear like it requires faye, but rather faye-websocket, which is just a particularly amazing websocket wrapper that sprung out of the faye project.
doomslice··on How to kill team motivation in 10 simple steps
> > No self development

> Typically the people who say this are the people who are most likely not to get much from free time to learn new stuff. if you are the type of engineer to learn new stuff then formal training and free time is not going to change your ability to pick things up. If you come to me and say I could not learn X because I had no free time, I am generally sceptical.

I used to feel the same way -- I would spend practically all of my time after work reading about new technologies, best practices, and trying them out in some prototypes that I could then apply to my work. Then I got married. Then I had twins. My priorities have shifted so much that if I'm not given the chance to explore and learn _during_ work, then I'm probably not going to do it anymore. Many companies allow this without explicitly calling it 20% time; other companies will tell you that any time not spent working on a story is wasted time.

doomslice··on Yahoo resetting usernames that have been inactive for over 12 months
I accidentally hijacked someone else's hotmail account (and subsequently their abandoned Myspace account) because I was able to register the hotmail they used for it and then use forgot password to send a reset email on Myspace. I assume the same thing could be done for other services.
doomslice··on How Google Authorship decreased our traffic by 90%
My brain went through a few things when I saw that result screenshot:

1. I thought it was giving results for a guy named Marco.

2. After realizing it was Macro, I thought the #1 result was a blog or review.

3. I then focused on the 2nd result because it looked less cluttered.

doomslice··on LivingSocial Hacked – 50 Million Customers Affected
I was REALLY hoping there would be no links to livingsocial in that email and that there would just be instructions to enter it in yourself. Now a phisher can copy the entire email and have that link in the yellow portion send you to a phishing site.
doomslice··on Extending the Revealing Module Pattern – Why is this a bad idea?
I have never, ever come across a scenario where assigning to the object instead of the prototype has made any meaningful impact on performance.

The only scenario I can even think of where it would maybe possibly matter would be a tight loop where you are doing little else except just accessing properties.

doomslice··on Extending the Revealing Module Pattern – Why is this a bad idea?
I don't really see the need for the extend at all. In fact if you don't use it, it will work the same as example 1 and you'll still have access to self.

Or you can just do this.foo = foo; this.value = value; at the end instead of returning an Object.

doomslice··on Create a web app from scratch in under 5 minutes with Meteor and Mailgun
Just curious, how does Meteor deal with concurrency issues where multiple clients are making changes to the same objects? Does last update win? How does this get reflected back to the UI?

Brief example: A grocery list that both my wife and I are editing, deleting, adding, and re-arranging at the same time.

doomslice··on Why I'm Leaving Reddit
My guess is that it had nothing to do with that subreddit and more to do with individual people clicking "report" on the links he submitted.
doomslice··on Why I'm Leaving Reddit
Here's the link to RTS - http://www.reddit.com/r/reportthespammers/comments/xwrf7/ove..., no discussion there at all. Just a karma count of +3/-2
doomslice··on Aspects of Building a Node.js Application
Wouldn't a simple uncaughtException handler be sufficient to prevent most crashes?

    process.on('uncaughtException', function (err) {
      // log it
    });
doomslice··on Why Do All the Great Node.js Developers Hate CoffeeScript?
I like CoffeeScript. It makes writing some things in JavaScript a little bit easier and maybe even a little bit faster.

However, I don't like _using_ CoffeeScipt. It immediately shuts out the other 85%+ of JavaScript users who aren't familiar with CoffeeScript from reading and understanding my code.

doomslice··on Why Mark Cuban is wrong about Facebook
Also, this is only the number of people using the Myspace Facebook app, not the site as a whole.
doomslice··on Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others launch webplatform.org
As you suggest, there are several schools of thought about how best to provide class-style programming. By using a closure instead of prototypes, you can have "true" private properties and functions. If you use prototype, you'll need to use a convention to mark something as private and hope the developers respect that (marking it with an underscore is common). In my experience, someone will ignore the convention and then something will break when you change or remove your "private" variable.
